Mars sign compatibility compares how two people want and how they fight. Mars shows desire, drive and anger, so Mars signs in the same element tend to agree on pace, and the same Mars sign, about one couple in 12, means you want and fight in the same way. One person's Mars touching the other's Venus or Moon says more.

In the Western tradition Mars is the planet of heat and cutting: pursuit, appetite, competition, the temper and the surgeon's knife. In one chart its sign describes how a person goes after what they want and what they do when they are blocked. Between two charts the question narrows. Can two people's ways of wanting and fighting share a bed and a kitchen? That is a smaller question than "are we compatible", and a far more useful one.

What your Mars sign says about sex and fights

Read a Mars sign for three things: pace, directness and how anger ends. Pace is how fast desire moves from interest to action. Directness is whether a person asks for what they want or arranges for it to happen. The ending is the part couples notice most. Some Mars signs flare and forget within the hour, some go quiet for three days, and some file the argument away and bring it back, word for word, a year later.

Mars is also judged by its condition in the sign. It rules Aries and Scorpio, where it acts with the least hesitation. It is exalted in Capricorn, where the drive is disciplined and patient. It is in detriment in Libra and Taurus, the signs opposite its own, and in fall in Cancer. A Mars in detriment or fall is not a weak lover or a pushover. It works by indirect routes: Mars in Libra argues through fairness and what other people would think, Mars in Taurus digs in and outlasts, and Mars in Cancer defends the home and sulks when it cannot. Knowing the condition explains a lot of fights that look, from outside, like nothing at all.

Mars signConditionDesire looks likeIn a fight
Ariesrulershipquick, direct, enjoys the chaseloud, fast, over by dinner
Taurusdetrimenta slow build; touch, food, timeimmovable; outlasts rather than argues
Gemini—talk, flirtation, varietyargues in sentences, changes the subject
Cancerfallcloseness first, then desireindirect; moods, silence, old hurts
Leo—generous, theatrical, wants to be wantedpride; needs a way to back down without losing face
Virgo—attentive, skilled, practicalcriticism, lists, getting the detail right
Libradetrimentcourtship, mutuality, a good settingavoids the fight, then argues the principle
Scorpiorulershipintense, private, all or nothingcontrolled, strategic, a long memory
Sagittarius—frank, spontaneous, likes noveltyblunt; leaves the room, or the city
Capricornexaltationpatient, purposeful, built to lastcold and organised; wins the long game
Aquarius—unconventional; needs roomdetached; argues from principle, goes distant
Pisces—romantic, responsive, fluidevasive; absorbs anger and lets it out sideways

A dash means Mars has neither rulership nor exaltation in that sign, nor detriment or fall. The cells are starting points. A Mars in Leo that squares Saturn in the same chart will not be as generous or as theatrical as the table suggests, which is why a full comparison reads the whole chart and not one row.

Mars by element: who agrees on pace

Fire Mars (Aries, Leo, Sagittarius) moves first and asks later. Earth Mars (Taurus, Virgo, Capricorn) wants evidence and time, and once it commits it lasts. Air Mars (Gemini, Libra, Aquarius) is aroused by conversation and argues in paragraphs. Water Mars (Cancer, Scorpio, Pisces) needs to feel safe before it acts, and remembers how it felt when it did not.

Two Mars signs in the same element share a tempo, and that is the main thing the element tells you. Fire with air and earth with water are the next easiest: the signs sit a sextile or an opposition apart and usually find a common rhythm after some negotiation. The other pairings (fire with water, fire with earth, air with water, air with earth) put the two Mars signs a square, a quincunx or a single sign apart, and the clash of tempo is the first thing most couples recognise. One wants to sort it out tonight. The other needs until the weekend.

Same Mars sign as your partner

Two birth dates drawn at random from 1950 to 2009 share a Mars sign 8.47% of the time, roughly one pair in 12. They share a Mars element 25% of the time. Shymea computed both figures from NASA JPL's DE442 ephemeris, sampling Mars every six hours across those 60 years; the data file is published with this article.

If Mars spent the same time in every sign the first figure would be exactly one in 12, 8.33%. It does not. Over the 60 years Mars spent the most time in Cancer for 9.69% and the least in Aquarius for 6.61%. Two things cause the imbalance. Mars's orbit is noticeably oval, and it moves slowest along the stretch that, seen from Earth, lies behind Cancer to Libra. And it turned retrograde 29 times in those 60 years, each time running backwards for weeks before turning forward again, which can hold it in one sign for months. Its longest stay was 235 days, in Virgo from November 1964 to June 1965. The median stay was 46 days.

Couples are not random pairs, of course. With a median stay of 46 days, two people born within the same few weeks very often share a Mars sign, and a classmate or a partner your own age is more likely to than someone a decade older or younger.

What it means is a Mars to Mars conjunction by sign. You want at the same speed and you fight in the same style, so signals rarely get misread. The shared blind spot is doubled, though. Two Aries Mars people seldom let an argument cool, because neither is the one who calms things down. Two Taurus Mars people agree about almost everything except who moves first, and a disagreement over the washing-up can turn into a week-long stand-off. Two Libra Mars people are polite to a fault and let resentments pile up, since neither will start the row that would clear them.

The degrees matter as well. Mars at 3° Leo and Mars at 27° Leo share a sign but sit 24° apart, and most astrologers would read that as an echo rather than a conjunction. Within a few degrees it is the real thing, and both people tend to feel it from the first meeting.

Mars opposite Mars, square Mars and trine Mars in synastry

Opposite Mars signs turn up about as often as matching ones: 8.2% of random pairs, against 8.47% for the same sign. Opposite signs share a mode (cardinal, fixed or mutable) and sit in complementary elements, so the two people want the same kind of thing done in opposite ways. Mars in Aries opposite Mars in Libra is the classic case. One acts and apologises later; the other weighs it up and then objects to not having been consulted. It is a strong attraction signature and a dependable source of rows, often on the same evening.

Mars square Mars puts the two signs three apart, such as Aries and Cancer or Leo and Scorpio. Same mode, mismatched element: both people push, from angles that do not meet. The fixed squares (Taurus and Leo, Leo and Scorpio, Scorpio and Aquarius, Aquarius and Taurus) produce the longest stand-offs, because nobody in a fixed sign likes to be the one who gives way.

Mars trine Mars, the same element, is the easy version: matching tempo, a shared appetite for the same kind of activity, fewer crossed wires. Easy is not the same as hot. Couples with a Mars trine often describe the attraction as steady rather than dramatic, and some find they need a bit of outside friction, a project or a sport, to keep it lively. The sextile is similar and lighter.

Mars and Venus between two charts

For sexual chemistry, the contact between one person's Mars and the other's Venus says more than either Mars sign on its own. When Mars falls on or opposite a partner's Venus, the Mars person tends to pursue and the Venus person tends to feel wanted. The roles have nothing to do with gender, and in many couples they run both ways at once. The conjunction is the clearest version. The opposition is magnetic and slightly adversarial. A square adds friction that reads as chemistry early on and as irritation later, depending on what else connects the two charts.

Imagine one partner with Venus at 14° Gemini and the other with Mars at 16° Gemini. The attraction starts in conversation: the texting, the banter, the first date that is mostly talk and runs until the bar closes. The Mars person sets the pace, and the Venus person enjoys being chased by someone quick. Now move that Mars to 16° Virgo, a square. The pair still find each other attractive, but the Mars person's directness lands on the Venus person as critique, and the flirting picks up an edge. Neither version is a verdict. Both describe how it tends to feel. For the Venus side of the comparison, see Venus sign compatibility.

Mars and the Moon: why some fights hurt more

The Moon shows what a person needs in order to feel safe. When a partner's Mars sits on it, or squares or opposes it, ordinary assertiveness can land as an attack: a raised voice, a fast decision, a door shut slightly too hard. The Mars person often has no idea they did anything. In a trine or a sextile the same contact reads as protectiveness, the partner who handles the difficult phone call or tells the landlord no.

This is the contact to look for when one person says "it was the way you said it" and the other says "I only said it once". It explains more repeated arguments than any Mars sign pairing, because the hurt is about tone and timing rather than the subject of the row.

Where their Mars falls in your chart

With both birth times, each person's Mars can be placed in the other's houses, counted by whole sign from the rising sign. The house says where the heat shows up in daily life.

  • Your 1st house: you notice them physically and at once. They energise you, or they get on your nerves, and sometimes both in the same afternoon.
  • Your 4th house: the rows happen at home, about home. It is also a good signature for renovating a house together, if you can agree on the paint.
  • Your 5th house: play, flirting and sex as fun. Board games get competitive.
  • Your 7th house: the open partner and the open rival, often the same person.
  • Your 8th house: sex, shared money and intensity. Arguments about debt and arguments about desire tend to arrive together.
  • Your 12th house: anger that goes unspoken. You may feel undermined without being able to say how.

Without a birth time the houses cannot be read, but the Mars sign and most of the Mars, Venus and Moon contacts still can. The rising sign calculator shows how much a birth time changes.

Why matching elements is not enough

Element matching is where most Mars compatibility lists stop, and it covers only part of the picture. A shared element turns up in 25% of random pairs, and it does not make the two Mars signs equal in condition. Mars in Scorpio and Mars in Cancer are both water. The first is in its own sign and acts directly and for a long time; the second is in its fall and acts indirectly, through mood and protection. Put them together and the Scorpio Mars may read the Cancer Mars as evasive, while the Cancer Mars feels pushed. The element said they match. The condition says how.

The element also ignores the degrees, the Venus and Moon contacts, and the houses. Two fire Mars signs 118° apart with Mars squaring the other's Moon will fight more than an earth and a fire Mars with Mars trine the other's Venus. Lists that pair Mars signs by element are a fair first sort, no more than that.

What Mars sign compatibility cannot tell you

It cannot tell you what anyone likes in bed. Searches for Mars signs and kinks turn up confident lists, but a Mars sign describes pace and directness, not particular preferences, and no chart replaces asking. It says nothing about consent, sexual orientation or how a person behaves towards a partner when angry. A hard Mars contact is never a reason to put up with being frightened, and an easy one does not make anyone safe. And it does not decide whether two people should stay together. Mars describes how a couple fights, not whether the fights are worth having.

How to compare two Mars signs

  1. Find both Mars signs. A birth date is enough unless Mars changed sign that day. In the 60 years counted here it entered a sign 413 times, so the edge cases are less rare than people assume. A free birth chart gives the sign and degree.
  2. Note each Mars's condition from the table above: rulership, exaltation, detriment, fall or none.
  3. Check the Mars to Mars angle by sign and then by degree: same sign, opposite, square, trine or sextile.
  4. Check each Mars against the other's Venus and Moon. These contacts usually outweigh the Mars sign pairing.
  5. With birth times, place each Mars in the other's houses.

Shymea's synastry compatibility reading runs all five steps across two full charts. For how synastry works in general, see what synastry is and how to read it, and for the aspects themselves, what conjunctions, squares, trines and oppositions mean.

Mars sign compatibility: frequently asked questions

What does it mean to have the same Mars sign as your partner?

You want at the same pace and fight in the same style, so you rarely misread each other. The risk is a doubled blind spot: two fast Mars signs never cool an argument and two slow ones never start one. About 8.47% of random pairs born 1950 to 2009 share a Mars sign, roughly one in 12.

Which Mars signs are most compatible?

Mars signs in the same element share a tempo, and fire with air or earth with water usually find a common rhythm. Compatibility depends more on the Mars, Venus and Moon contacts between the two charts and on each Mars's condition than on the sign pairing alone.

Is Mars opposite Mars good in synastry?

It is strong rather than good or bad. Opposite Mars signs share a mode and want the same kind of thing done in opposite ways, which makes for real attraction and regular rows. It turns up in about 8.2% of random pairs, nearly as often as a shared Mars sign.

Does your Mars sign matter for sexual compatibility?

It describes pace and directness in desire, so it matters, but the cross-contacts matter more. One person's Mars on the other's Venus is the classic attraction signature in synastry. A Mars sign does not describe specific sexual preferences, and nothing in a chart replaces asking.

Which Mars sign is the most common?

Cancer. From 1950 to 2009 Mars spent 9.69% of the time in Cancer and only 6.61% in Aquarius, because its orbit is oval and its retrograde loops hold it in some signs for months. The longest stay in that period was 235 days, in Virgo.
