Rising Sign Calculator: your Ascendant, to the degree.
Your rising sign is the zodiac degree on the eastern horizon at the minute you were born. Enter birth date, time and place to get the sign, the degree, and what it tends to describe.
The Ascendant moves through all twelve signs every day, roughly one sign every two hours, so it is the placement that depends most on an accurate birth time. That is also why it is the placement a Sun-sign horoscope cannot know.
Traditional astrology reads the rising sign as the mode of entry: how you begin, what you register first, the manner people meet before they know anything else. It is not a mask over a truer self, and it does not describe your face. It is one exact degree, and the planet that rules that sign becomes the chart ruler.
How it is computed
The birth time is converted to Universal Time using the historical time zone rules for the birth place, then to local sidereal time. The horizon's intersection with the ecliptic is solved for that instant and latitude, using the JPL DE442 ephemeris through the Shymea engine. The same calculation produces the Midheaven and the Placidus house cusps.
Near a sign boundary a few minutes of clock time can change the answer. If your result sits within a degree or two of 0°, treat it as uncertain until the birth time is confirmed from a record.
Common questions
- Can I find my rising sign without a birth time?
- No. The Ascendant changes sign about every two hours, and at some latitudes some signs rise in under an hour. Without a time, the best you can do is the Sun and Moon signs; this calculator requires a time so it never guesses.
- Is the rising sign the same as the first house?
- They overlap but are not the same object. The Ascendant is one exact degree on the horizon; the first house is the sector that begins there. A planet can be in the first house without being close to the Ascendant.
- Does the rising sign describe appearance?
- Traditional texts offer correspondences, but they are inconsistent and shaped by their era's assumptions. Read the rising sign as manner and orientation, not as a face or body type.
- Why does another site give me a different rising sign?
- Usually a time-zone or daylight-saving error, or a sidereal setting. Shymea uses the Tropical zodiac and historical zone rules for the birth place. If the two results differ by exactly one sign, check the zodiac setting on the other site.
