Retrograde Calendar

Mercury retrograde 2026 & 2027, to the minute.

Six retrograde periods across two years — each with the exact station times, zodiac degrees, and both shadow phases. Computed directly from the JPL planetary ephemeris, not copied from another list.

What Mercury retrograde actually is

Mercury never reverses course. It circles the Sun in 88 days to our 365, so about three times a year the faster planet laps us on the inside of the track. While it’s overtaking, Mercury’s position measured against the distant stars appears — from our own moving vantage point — to drift backwards through the zodiac for roughly three weeks. It’s the same illusion you get on the highway: the car you’re passing seems, for a moment, to slide backward. The instants when that apparent motion stalls and flips are called the stations: the station retrograde, where backward motion begins, and the station direct, where forward motion resumes. Those are the timestamps in the table above, calculated from the change of sign in Mercury’s apparent rate of motion along the ecliptic.

Astrologers have watched these loops for well over two thousand years, and the traditional reading is consistent: Mercury governs messages, contracts, commerce, and travel, and when it appears to move backwards those departments of life are said to turn inward or misfire. Modern practice frames retrograde less as a curse than as a change of tense — a season for the re- words: review, revise, reconnect, repair, reconsider. Plans made during the retrograde often need rework once Mercury is direct; conversations and drafts revisited during it tend to improve.

The shadow periods matter to that reading. Before the station, Mercury passes over the stretch of zodiac it’s about to re-cross — the pre-shadow, beginning when it first touches the degree where it will later turn direct. After the station direct, it takes about two more weeks to re-cross the same ground and pass the degree where the retrograde began — the post-shadow. Astrologers treat the pre-shadow as the wind-up, when the retrograde’s themes first surface, and the post-shadow as the unwinding, when loose ends resolve. Both boundaries are computed exactly in the table.

A working survival guide

You don’t need to put your life on hold three times a year. The practical version: build slack into travel days, back up your devices, re-read anything before you sign it, and say the important thing twice. If an old colleague, an ex, or an unfinished project resurfaces mid-retrograde, treat it as an invitation to close the loop rather than reopen it. And note where each retrograde falls: all three 2026 retrogrades begin in water signs (Pisces, Cancer, Scorpio), which astrologers read as review work centred on feelings, memory, and trust rather than logistics. Where those signs fall in your chart says which rooms of your life get the audit — that’s what a birth chart is for.

Mercury retrograde, answered

When is the next Mercury retrograde?
Mercury is retrograde Feb 26, 2026 to Mar 20, 2026 (Pisces); Mercury is retrograde Jun 29, 2026 to Jul 23, 2026 (Cancer); Mercury is retrograde Oct 24, 2026 to Nov 13, 2026 (Scorpio); Mercury is retrograde Feb 9, 2027 to Mar 3, 2027 (Pisces into Aquarius); Mercury is retrograde Jun 10, 2027 to Jul 4, 2027 (Cancer into Gemini); Mercury is retrograde Oct 7, 2027 to Oct 28, 2027 (Scorpio into Libra). All dates UTC, computed from the JPL ephemeris.
How many times is Mercury retrograde in 2026?
Three times in 2026: Feb 26, 2026–Mar 20, 2026, Jun 29, 2026–Jul 23, 2026, Oct 24, 2026–Nov 13, 2026. Mercury retrogrades roughly three times a year, each lasting about three weeks.
Does Mercury actually move backwards?
No. Retrograde is an optical effect: Mercury orbits the Sun faster than Earth, and about three times a year it overtakes us on the inside track. From our moving viewpoint its position against the background stars appears to drift backwards for roughly three weeks, the way a slower car seems to roll backward as you pass it.
What is the Mercury retrograde shadow period?
The pre-shadow begins when Mercury first passes the degree where it will later station direct; the post-shadow ends when Mercury re-passes the degree where it stationed retrograde. Astrologers treat these flanking weeks as the wind-up and unwinding of the retrograde's themes. The exact shadow boundaries for each period are in the table on this page.
Are these dates accurate for my time zone?
The instants are exact and given in UTC. Convert them to your own time zone: in the Americas the local calendar date can be one day earlier, and in Asia, Australia, or New Zealand it can be one day later than the UTC date shown.

How these dates are computed: skyfield + JPL DE442 ephemeris; geocentric apparent ecliptic longitudes, true ecliptic and equinox of date (tropical zodiac); stations detected via longitude-rate sign change and refined to well under one hour; all times UTC. Nothing on this page is copied from another calendar — every timestamp is calculated directly from the JPL ephemeris, the same data source used by observatories.
