The Moon tonight

Will Halloween 2026 be a full moon? Not quite.

Try this today

  • Step outside before bed, look east, and catch the Moon clearing the rooftops. It is worth the cold ears.
  • Leave your phone face down for the walk. A waning Moon is a good excuse to notice the street instead of the screen.
  • Use the Halloween Moon finder below to look up the Moon on the Halloween of your first costume.

The porch light is on. The candy bowl is already half gone, and the air smells like cold leaves and somebody's fireplace. You look up for the big round Moon from the movies. It hasn't shown up yet.

Halloween 2026 is not a full moon. At 8 pm EDT, 31 October 2026 (00:00 UTC, 1 November), the Moon is a waning gibbous in Cancer, about 60% lit. The full moon came 6 days earlier, on Oct 26, 2026 in Taurus. Since then it has been shrinking a little each night and rising later.

How late? Here's a handy rule: a full Moon rises at sunset, and every 15° the Moon slides away from that point pushes moonrise back about an hour. On Halloween night that works out to roughly 5 hours after sunset, so across much of North America the Moon comes up well after most trick-or-treaters are home and counting their haul. Your latitude moves this around, so treat it as a rough guide.

When it does rise, it will be lopsided and bright, lit on its left side as seen from the Northern Hemisphere. It keeps waning toward the new moon on Nov 9, 2026 in Scorpio, 8 days later. Every phase of the year is on the 2026 moon phase calendar.

The sky behind it

Moon: 27°28′ Cancer, elongation 258.9° from the Sun, 59.7% illuminated, at 8 pm EDT, 31 October 2026 (00:00 UTC, 1 November). Previous full moon Oct 26, 2026 · 04:11 UTC at 2°46′ Taurus. Next new moon Nov 9, 2026 · 07:02 UTC at 16°53′ Scorpio. Moonrise estimate: (258.9° − 180°) ÷ 15° per hour, a rule of thumb that ignores latitude and the Moon's north-south position.

Moon in Cancer

A Cancer Moon on a night about home and memory

Try this today

  • Cook something someone used to make for you. Soup counts. So does a box mix, if it was the box mix.
  • Put an old Halloween photo on the fridge for the week.
  • Call the person you used to trick-or-treat with. Five minutes is plenty.

Halloween is a night you spend on doorsteps. Everyone else's doorsteps. Then you come home, peel off the face paint, and something softens: the house smells of candle wax, somebody is sorting candy on the floor by brand, and you're suddenly thinking about the Halloweens you had as a kid.

The Moon agrees with the mood. At 8 pm EDT, 31 October 2026 (00:00 UTC, 1 November) it sits at 27°28′ Cancer. Astrologers read Cancer as the sign of home, family, food and memory. A waning Moon, in the same tradition, is a time for letting go and looking back rather than starting fresh. For a night tied up with remembering the dead, that's a tidy match, if you like your symbols to rhyme. Treat it as a mirror to think with, not a forecast.

One practical note. The Moon is late in Cancer, about 2.5° from the end, and at its average pace it crosses into Leo roughly 5 hours later. That means on the US West Coast the Moon may already be in Leo by the end of the evening. Check your own time and place with the moon sign calculator. A Moon this late in a sign is often void of course, too; the void-of-course tool shows the exact window.

The sky behind it

The Moon moves about 12° to 15° a day, so 5 hours is an average-pace estimate for the last 2.5°. Cancer Moons on Halloween are not rare: between 1990 and 2040 it happens in 5 years (1996, 2007, 2015, 2026, 2034), measured at 00:00 UTC on November 1.

Two planets backing up

Mercury and Venus are both retrograde on Halloween

Try this today

  • Send the party details as one clear message: the address, the start time and who to call if you get lost.
  • Charge your phone before you leave. Retrograde or not, it helps.
  • If an ex surfaces, sleep on it. A reply can wait until Venus turns direct.

There is always one group chat that says "7ish?" and one friend who shows up at 6:15 in full costume. This year the sky backs that friend up.

Mercury is retrograde in Scorpio on Halloween night, 8 days into a retrograde that runs from Oct 24, 2026 to Nov 13, 2026, all in Scorpio. Astrologers link Mercury retrograde with tangled plans and crossed messages. In practice, that just means checking the time, the address and the tickets twice. The Mercury retrograde dos and don'ts has the full list.

Venus is retrograde too, from Oct 3, 2026 to Nov 14, 2026. It has already backed out of Scorpio into Libra, on Oct 25, 2026. Astrologers read a Venus retrograde as a time to look back at love, money and what you value, which is why the old flame who texts "happy Halloween!!" is the classic cliché. You don't have to answer tonight.

Here is a detail we love. On Halloween night the Sun sits at 8°35′ Scorpio, just 5′ (arcminutes) from 8°29′ Scorpio, the exact spot where Venus turned around on Oct 3, 2026. Astrologers who work with stations would call that a night to notice what has come back around.

Venus stations retrograde Oct 3, 2026 · 07:15 UTC at 8°29′ Scorpio and direct Nov 14, 2026 · 00:27 UTC at 22°52′ Libra; it meets the Sun Oct 24, 2026 · 03:44 UTC at 0°45′ Scorpio, a Venus star point.

Where the night comes from

Samhain, All Hallows' Eve, and a debate that is still going

A harvest's end, a saints' vigil, and centuries of people telling it differently.Photo: Leandro Almeida / Burst

Try this today

  • Light one candle for someone you miss. Say their name out loud; it is an old habit for a reason.
  • Keep a second, quieter Halloween on Nov 7, 2026: a walk, a fire, a list of what this year gave you.
  • Next time someone says it is all Celtic, you can say "debated" and sound very well read.

Every October someone at a party, usually holding a cider, says Halloween is "really" an ancient Celtic festival. They're half right, and the other half is more interesting.

Halloween is often traced to Samhain, a Gaelic festival that marked the end of the harvest and the start of winter. The Library of Congress describes the popular account: people believed spirits walked the earth, lit bonfires and wore disguises. It also notes that in the 8th century Pope Gregory III set November 1 as a time to honor saints. The evening before became All Hallows' Eve, later Halloween.

How direct the link is remains debated. The Wikipedia article on Halloween sets out both views: some historians see Samhain customs carried into Halloween, others see it starting as the Christian vigil of All Hallows' Day. Samhain itself is first mentioned in Irish literature from the 9th century and was not described in detail until much later, as the Wikipedia article on Samhain explains. So the details of older practice are uncertain, and anyone who sounds very sure is filling in gaps.

Samhain also has a date in the sky: the point halfway between the September equinox and the December solstice. In 2026 the Sun reaches it, at 15°00′ Scorpio, on Nov 7, 2026, 6 days after Halloween night. Some modern pagans keep the festival on that astronomical date, as the Wheel of the Year article notes; the eight-festival wheel itself dates from the mid-20th century. More on the Samhain 2026 page.

The stories are sky lore, mostly Greek, and the ancient writers told them in more than one way. The costumes are just for fun.

Quick answers

is halloween 2026 a full moon

No. At 8 pm EDT, 31 October 2026 (00:00 UTC, 1 November), the Moon is a waning gibbous in Cancer, about 60% lit. The full moon came 6 days earlier, on Oct 26, 2026 in Taurus. The next new moon is Nov 9, 2026 in Scorpio.

halloween 2026 moon phase

A waning gibbous in Cancer, about 60% lit, at 27°28′ Cancer at 8 pm EDT, 31 October 2026 (00:00 UTC, 1 November). It's waning, so it rises roughly 5 hours after sunset and shrinks toward the new moon on Nov 9, 2026. It's also 2.5° from the end of Cancer, so it reaches Leo roughly 5 hours later, which can mean late evening on the West Coast.

what zodiac sign is a halloween baby

Scorpio. Every October 31 birthday has a Scorpio Sun; in 2026 it sits at 8°35′ Scorpio. The Sun entered Scorpio on Oct 23, 2026 and moves into Sagittarius on Nov 22, 2026. Your Moon and rising sign depend on the exact time and place, which a free birth chart shows.

is mercury retrograde on halloween 2026

Yes. Mercury is retrograde in Scorpio; its retrograde runs Oct 24, 2026 to Nov 13, 2026. Venus is retrograde too, in Libra, from Oct 3, 2026 to Nov 14, 2026.

when will the next full moon on halloween occur

2039. 2028 comes close, 98% lit, which most people would call full. Between 1990 and 2040, Halloween lands on a full moon in 3 years: 2001, 2020, 2039. The most recent was 2020. All measured at 00:00 UTC on November 1, the evening of October 31 in the US.

Nov 7, 2026 · 09:52 UTC, when the Sun reaches 15°00′ Scorpio, halfway between the September equinox and the December solstice. That's 6 days after Halloween night.

is halloween based on samhain

Partly, and it's debated. Many historians trace Halloween customs to the Gaelic festival of Samhain; others see it beginning as the Christian vigil of All Hallows' Day on November 1, a date the Library of Congress credits to Pope Gregory III in the 8th century. The Wikipedia article on Halloween sets out both views.
