A Saturn return is not a birthday. It is the moment Saturn, which takes about 29.46 years to orbit the Sun, comes back to the exact zodiac degree it held when you were born. Because Saturn retrogrades for months each year, most returns cross that degree three times over roughly a year: a first direct pass, a retrograde pass, and a final direct pass.

This calculator scans ninety years of Saturn's motion for your natal degree and lists each crossing with your age at the time. Around 29, 59 and 88 are the usual ages, but the exact window depends on where in Saturn's loop your birth fell.

How the dates are computed

Your natal Saturn longitude is computed for your birth instant in the Tropical zodiac. The tool then steps through Saturn's geocentric position from age 20 to 95 and refines every crossing of that longitude to the minute. Positions come from VSOP87 planetary theory, which agrees with the JPL ephemeris the Shymea engine uses to well within a day for Saturn.

Birth time barely matters here: Saturn moves about two arcminutes a day, so an unknown time shifts nothing. What the time does change is the house Saturn occupies, which is what decides what the return is about. The free birth chart shows that.

Common questions

What age is the first Saturn return?
Between about 27 and 30, most often 29. The exact dates depend on Saturn's speed at your birth and its retrograde loop during the return year, which is why a calculator beats a rule of thumb.
Why do I get three dates?
Saturn retrogrades for roughly four and a half months every year. If the retrograde loop overlaps your natal degree, Saturn crosses it going forward, backs over it, then crosses it again. Some returns have a single pass; most have three.
Does an unknown birth time matter?
Not for the dates. Saturn moves so slowly that a whole day of uncertainty changes the return date by nothing meaningful. Birth time matters for the house Saturn is in, and that is what shapes the return's theme.
Is the Saturn return always hard?
Traditional language calls Saturn a malefic, and the return often coincides with limits becoming real: deadlines, commitments, consequences. It is also when structures get built. Which it is depends on the house, the aspects to Saturn, and what you do with the year.
