Your big three is your Sun, Moon and rising sign. The Sun needs your birth date, the Moon usually needs the time too (it changes sign on 44% of days), and the rising sign needs the exact time and place: it changes about every 2 h.

The short version
What your big three actually is

Try this today
- Say yours out loud in one breath: Sun, Moon, rising. If it feels like a stranger's, look at the rising sign first. It is the one most people get wrong from a rounded birth time.
- Ask two friends which of your three they would have guessed. See whether they land on the rising sign before the Sun.
Someone in the group chat says "I'm a Leo Sun, Pisces Moon, Virgo rising," and everyone nods like that explains the whole person. Honestly? It explains a lot.
Your big three is the three placements astrologers lean on first: the Sun, the sign the Sun was in on your birthday; the Moon, the sign the Moon was in at the moment you were born; and the rising sign, also called the Ascendant, the sign that was coming up over the eastern horizon right then (Ascendant).
The Sun sign is the one you already know from newspaper horoscopes, which popularised sun-sign astrology in the twentieth century (Horoscope). The big three is the step after that. It is why two Leos can feel nothing alike: one has a Capricorn Moon and Scorpio rising, the other a Sagittarius Moon and Gemini rising.
There are 1,728 possible big threes. You are one of them, and the calculator below tells you which, using the same tropical zodiac as every Western astrologer.
Placement one
The Sun: the one you already know (mostly)

Try this today
- If you were born on the 19th to the 23rd of any month, run the calculator with your real birth time. That is the cusp zone.
- Look at your Sun's degree. 0° to 9° is the first decan, 10° to 19° the second, 20° to 29° the third.
The Sun is the slow, reliable one. It moves between 0.95° and 1.02° a day (faster in January, when Earth is closest to it), so it spends roughly a month in each sign and changes sign twelve times a year.
That means your Sun sign is certain on almost every birthday. The exception is the day the Sun crosses a sign line. Horoscope columns print tidy date ranges like "Leo: July 23 to August 22", but the real crossing moves by a day or so from year to year and happens at a particular minute. If you were born that day, the clock decides.
People call that being "born on the cusp". Astrologically there is no blend: the Sun is either at 29° of one sign or 0° of the next. The calculator gives you the degree and tells you how many hours from the line you were, so you can stop arguing with your horoscope app.
In the usual modern reading, the Sun describes who you are becoming: your core drive, what you are proud of, where you want to shine.
The sky behind it
Sun speed range from DE442 daily positions, 2000-2029: 0.953 to 1.0197 degrees per day. 360 sign changes in 30 years, exactly twelve a year.
Placement two
The Moon: why your birth time matters more than you think

Try this today
- Think of the last time you felt properly safe. Where were you, who was there? Hold that next to your Moon sign's keywords.
- Comparing with a partner? Moon signs say a lot about how two people handle a bad day.
The Moon is the fast one. It moves 0.49° to 0.64° every hour and spends about 55 hours in each sign (between 47 and 62 hours, depending on its speed). That is about two and a quarter days, not the two and a half you often see quoted.
Here is the part most free calculators skip. Over the thirty years from 2000 to 2029, the Moon changed sign during 4,812 of 10,958 days, or 43.9%. On those days, a birth date alone gives you two possible Moon signs. If yours is one of them, the calculator's no-birth-time mode shows the exact local minute the Moon moved, so even "sometime in the afternoon" might be enough.
In the usual modern reading, the Moon describes what you need to feel okay: comfort, moods, the way you look after people and want to be looked after.
The sky behind it
Hourly DE442 samples from 2000-01-01 to 2029-12-31 (UTC calendar days). Hours per sign measured between consecutive hourly ingress samples, so values are to the nearest hour. Mean 54.6 hours matches the tropical month (27.32 days) divided by 12.
Placement three
Rising sign: the one that needs a clock and a map

Try this today
- After you get your result, tap ± 30 min. If your rising sign changes, it is worth hunting down the exact time.
- Find your chart ruler (the planet that rules your rising sign) and see which house it sits in.
Rising sign calculator, to the degreeHow rare is your rising sign?Chart ruler calculator
As Earth turns, the whole zodiac wheels over the eastern horizon once a day. The sign on that horizon at the minute you were born is your rising sign, and the exact degree is your Ascendant (Ascendant). It starts your first house, and its ruling planet is called your chart ruler.
Twelve signs in a day works out at about 2 h each on average. But nothing about it is average. Because the zodiac is tilted against the equator, some signs slide over the horizon at a steep angle and some at a shallow one. At London's latitude, Pisces and Aries take only about 52 min to rise, while Libra and Virgo take about 2 h 50 min. In New York the spread is 1 h 11 min to 2 h 33 min.
Go south of the equator and it flips. In Sydney the quickest risers are Virgo and Libra (1 h 20 min) and the slowest Aquarius and Taurus (2 h 25 min). Near the equator, in Singapore, every sign takes between 1 h 50 min and 2 h 9 min.
So if your birth time is rounded to the hour and you have a fast-rising sign, your rising sign is genuinely uncertain. That is why the calculator tells you how many minutes you are from the next sign. In the usual reading the rising sign is how you meet the world: first impressions, style, your instinctive approach to new things.
The sky behind it
Rising times computed from the Ascendant formula over one full sidereal day (apparent sidereal time, true obliquity for 2026), converted to clock minutes. They depend on latitude only, not on the date. Full table below.
The big five
Sun, Moon, rising, Venus and Mars

Try this today
- Compare your Venus with your partner's Mars, then swap. Astrologers read that pairing as attraction.
- If your Mercury and Sun share a sign, notice whether the way you talk matches the way you are. Then check a friend whose Mercury is one sign over.
Once you know your big three, the next question is usually about love: what is my Venus, what is my Mars? Add Mercury and you have what some people call the big six, the personal planets plus the Ascendant.
There is a neat bit of astronomy hiding in here. Mercury and Venus orbit inside Earth's orbit, so from here they never stray far from the Sun. Over a hundred years of daily positions (1950-2049), Mercury's greatest distance from the Sun in zodiac longitude was 27.79° and Venus's 47.22°, in line with the roughly 28° and 47° that astronomers quote (EarthSky).
That means your Mercury is in your Sun sign or a neighbouring sign, never further. Your Venus is at most two signs away. So a Taurus Sun can have Venus in Pisces, Aries, Taurus, Gemini or Cancer, and nowhere else. Mars is an outer planet, so it can be anywhere.
In the usual reading, Venus is what you love and how you show it, Mars is how you go after what you want, and Mercury is how you think and talk.

No birth time?
What to do if you don't know your birth time

Try this today
- Text the oldest relative who was around when you were born. Ask what was on TV, or whether it was light outside. Both narrow the window.
- Read the possible rising signs' keywords and ask a close friend which sounds most like you meeting someone new. Fun, not proof.
Rising sign without a birth timeWhy is my rising sign different?
First, the good news. Without a time, your Sun sign is still certain on all but about twelve days a year, and your Moon sign on roughly 56% of days. Tick "I don't know the birth time" in the calculator and it tells you which of those you are.
Your rising sign is the one that truly needs a time. The calculator lists every rising sign that came up on your birth date in your birth town, with the local hours for each. If you know it was "early morning" or "just before midnight", that often narrows it to one or two.
Where to look for the real time: a long-form birth certificate (some countries and states record the time, others do not), hospital or midwife records, a baby book, or a parent's or grandparent's memory, which is better than nothing but tends to round to the hour.
Still nothing? Some astrologers estimate a birth time by rectification: testing candidate charts against dated events in your life. Treat that as a working hypothesis, not a fact.

A simple way to say your big three
Try this sentence: "I am [Sun keywords] at heart, I need [Moon keywords] to feel okay, and I come across as [rising keywords]." A Leo Sun, Pisces Moon, Virgo rising becomes: warm and expressive at heart, needs imagination and quiet to feel okay, comes across as precise and observant. It is a start, not a sentence passed on you.

Two apps, two rising signs?
Check the inputs before blaming astrology. AM versus PM, daylight saving, a birth town typed as the hospital's suburb, or an app set to the sidereal zodiac (about 24° back) all move the rising sign. This calculator uses the tropical zodiac, geocentric, and reads the time zone and daylight saving rules for your exact birth place and date.

Quick answers
What is my big three in astrology?
Your big three is your Sun sign, Moon sign and rising sign (the Ascendant). The Sun comes from your birth date, the Moon from the date and usually the time, and the rising sign from the exact time and place. Enter all three in the calculator above and it shows them together, to the degree.
Can I find my big three without a birth time?
Two of them, most of the time. Your Sun sign is certain unless you were born on the day the Sun changed sign. Your Moon sign is certain on about 56% of days: on the other 44% the Moon changes sign during the day, and the calculator shows the exact local minute it did. Your rising sign needs a time, so you get the list of every rising sign that was possible that day instead.
How accurate is a big three calculator?
As accurate as the birth time you give it. The planet positions here agree with NASA JPL's DE442 ephemeris to a few arcseconds. The weak link is the clock: the rising sign changes about every 2 h on average, and at London's latitude Pisces and Aries rise in about 52 min. Use the "How sure is it?" buttons to see whether a rounded time could change your result.
What is the difference between Sun, Moon and rising?
In the usual modern reading, the Sun is your core identity and direction, the Moon is your emotional needs and what comforts you, and the rising sign is your manner, first impression and the lens you meet life through. They are a starting vocabulary rather than a verdict, and the rest of the chart adds detail.
Is there a Sun, Moon, rising, Venus and Mars calculator?
Yes, this one. Tap "Add Mercury, Venus, Mars" under your result. Mercury is always in your Sun sign or a neighbouring sign (51.3% of days it shares your Sun sign), and Venus is never more than two signs away.
Why does my rising sign change between apps?
Almost always the input: a birth time typed as AM instead of PM, a time zone or daylight saving error, or a different birth town. Some apps also use the sidereal zodiac, which shifts everything back by about 24 degrees. This calculator uses the tropical zodiac, the Western standard.
How many big three combinations are there?
1,728 (12 Sun signs times 12 Moon signs times 12 rising signs). They are not equally common: rising signs that cross the horizon fast are rarer, and how fast depends on where you were born.
What does it mean if my Sun, Moon and rising are the same sign?
It is sometimes called a triple sign, for example a triple Scorpio. It means the Sun and Moon were in the same sign (so you were born close to a new moon) and that sign was rising, which happens around sunrise. Astrologers read it as one sign's themes said three times over.
