Moon sign compatibility calculator: how you both feel

Sun signs tell you who you are on a first date. The Moon is who you are at 2 a.m. when something goes wrong. Put in two birthdays and see how your emotional weather lines up.

At a glance

Moon sign compatibility compares where the Moon was for each of you. Same sign, trine or sextile Moons (41.7% of random pairs) tend to comfort each other easily; squares and oppositions (25%) bring friction and pull.

Why the Moon

The sign that shows up when you're tired, hungry or hurt

Try this today

  • Ask your partner: "When you've had an awful day, what's the first thing you want from me?"
  • Answer it yourself, honestly, before you hear theirs.
  • Compare the answers with the Moon readings the calculator gives you.

Astrology gives the Moon the job of feelings, habits and comfort. Your Sun is what you're building; your Moon is what you need to feel okay while you build it.

That's why two people with "perfect" Sun signs can still keep missing each other. One wants a hug and a cup of tea after a bad day. The other wants to go for a run and talk about it tomorrow. Neither is wrong. Their Moons just speak different dialects.

Moon sign compatibility looks at how those two dialects sit together on the zodiac wheel. It doesn't tell you whether a relationship will last. It gives you words for the small daily stuff that decides how a relationship feels.

The birth time question

Do you need a birth time? On 56 days in 100, no

Most Moon calculators quietly guess. This one tells you when the guess matters.Photo: Cindy Malette / Burst

The Moon moves about 13 degrees a day and spends roughly 2.3 days in each sign. Between 1950 and 2029 it changed sign 12,833 times, and it did so on 43.9% of all calendar dates (never twice in one day).

So most of the time a date is enough. When it isn't, the calculator says so plainly: it checks the Moon at the first and last minute of the birthday in the right time zone, and if the sign changed, it shows both options and the local clock time of the switch.

If you're on a Moon-change day and don't know your time, ask whoever was there, check a baby book, or look for a birth certificate that lists a time. In the meantime, read both Moon signs and see which one sounds like you.

The sky behind it

Moon positions in the calculator come from astronomy-engine, run on your device. At 8 test moments from 1990 to 2027 it agreed with NASA JPL's DE442 ephemeris to within 3.6 arcseconds, far finer than a sign boundary needs. Tropical zodiac, geocentric, true equinox of date.

Seven ways two Moons can sit

A square Moon pair isn't a red flag. It's a couple that has to learn each other's comfort recipe on purpose.Photo: Leandro Almeida / Burst

Every Moon pair falls into one of seven shapes, counted by how many signs apart the two Moons are. The sextile, square, trine and opposition are the four aspects Ptolemy lists in the Tetrabiblos (2nd century), still the backbone of how astrologers compare charts.

Same emotional weather (same sign, 8.3% of random pairs). You need the same things to feel safe, so you get each other's moods without explaining. The catch: when you are both low, nobody is holding the umbrella.

Easy comfort (trine, 16.7%). Same element, so your instincts agree. Comfort flows without effort and fights cool down fast. Easy can slide into taking each other for granted, so say thank you out loud.

Supportive (sextile, 16.7%). Elements that feed each other: fire with air, earth with water. Your needs differ but fit together, and a little attention turns it into real ease.

Mirror moods (opposition, 8.3%). Opposite signs on the same axis. Each of you has the emotional skill the other lacks, which is magnetic. It works when you take turns being the steady one.

Friction to work with (square, 16.7%). Same pace, clashing elements. One of you wants to talk while the other wants space, or vice versa. Plenty of couples thrive here, once you name what each of you needs when upset.

Neighbours and quincunx (33.4% together). Signs one or five apart have no classical aspect at all. These pairs aren't doomed; they just need more translating.

Sun, Moon and rising

Astrologers who compare two charts usually start with the "lights". Moon to Moon shows whether your moods fit. Then one person's Sun against the other's Moon, which the synastry tradition treats as one of the classic bonds: one person's sense of self lands right where the other feels at home. See Sun conjunct Moon in synastry.

Rising sign compatibility comes next. The rising sign is the first impression and the style you meet the world with, and it needs an accurate birth time and place, because it changes roughly every two hours. Add both in the calculator and it compares rising to rising and each rising to the other's Moon.

Sun to Sun is the familiar one, and you can read every pairing on our compatibility pages. It's the headline, not the whole story.

Twelve comfort recipes

What each Moon sign needs when things go wrong

Moon in Aries needs honesty and room to react fast, comforts by jumping in to fix it, right now, and under stress flares up, then forgets it ten minutes later.

Moon in Taurus needs routine, touch and a calm home, comforts with food, a blanket and steady presence, and under stress goes quiet and digs in.

Moon in Gemini needs to talk it through, out loud, comforts with questions, jokes and distraction, and under stress overthinks and over-texts.

Moon in Cancer needs to feel wanted and looked after, comforts by mothering you, whoever you are, and under stress retreats into its shell and waits to be coaxed out.

Moon in Leo needs warmth, loyalty and to feel special, comforts with big-hearted attention, and under stress gets dramatic or hurt-proud.

Moon in Virgo needs order and useful ways to help, comforts with practical fixes and small kindnesses, and under stress worries, tidies and critiques.

Moon in Libra needs harmony and a fair partner, comforts by smoothing things over, and under stress people-pleases, then resents it.

Moon in Scorpio needs deep trust and total honesty, comforts by staying in the hard feeling with you, and under stress goes silent and watchful.

Moon in Sagittarius needs freedom, optimism and a bit of adventure, comforts with perspective and a plan to get out of the house, and under stress bolts, or jokes it away.

Moon in Capricorn needs security, respect and a plan, comforts by taking care of the practical side, and under stress works harder and shuts feelings down.

Moon in Aquarius needs space and friendship inside the love, comforts by listening without judging, and under stress detaches into analysis.

Moon in Pisces needs gentleness and emotional closeness, comforts with empathy, music and soft words, and under stress absorbs everything, then drifts away.

The calculator

Compare two Moon signs

Enter both birth dates. Add times and places if you have them for Sun, Moon and rising compatibility. Or skip the dates and pick two Moon signs you already know.

A date is enough most of the time. If the Moon changed sign on a birthday, the tool says so and shows both options.

Quick rule

The element shortcut

If you only remember one thing: Moons in the same element get each other fastest. Fire (Aries, Leo, Sagittarius) reacts fast and moves on. Earth (Taurus, Virgo, Capricorn) wants calm and routine. Air (Gemini, Libra, Aquarius) needs to talk. Water (Cancer, Scorpio, Pisces) needs to feel felt.

Quick answers

How do I calculate moon sign compatibility?

Find both Moon signs from birth dates (the calculator above does it), then count how many signs apart they are. Same sign, trine and sextile are the easiest; square and opposition bring friction and attraction; one or five apart need translating.

Can I find my moon sign without a birth time?

Usually. The Moon changes sign on 43.9% of dates, so on the other 56.1% a date is enough. On a change day the calculator shows both possible signs and the switch time.

Which moon signs are most compatible?

Moons in the same element: fire with fire, earth with earth, air with air, water with water. Sextiles (fire with air, earth with water) come next. Compatibility is about effort as much as signs, though.

Is moon sign compatibility more important than sun sign?

Many astrologers say the Moon matters more for living together day to day, because it describes needs and habits. The Sun describes identity. A full comparison looks at both, plus Venus and the rising sign.

What is sun moon rising sign compatibility?

It compares all three of your big three placements with your partner's: Moon to Moon, each Sun to the other's Moon, Sun to Sun and rising to rising. Rising needs an accurate birth time and place for both people.

Are opposite moon signs compatible?

Opposite Moons (8.3% of random pairs) share the same axis and often feel magnetic, since each has what the other lacks. It works best when you take turns being the calm one.

Is this the same as Vedic moon sign compatibility?

No. Vedic matching (Ashtakoota) uses the sidereal zodiac and the Moon's nakshatra. This page uses the tropical zodiac of Western astrology. The sidereal zodiac sits about 24 degrees behind it (Lahiri ayanamsa), so your Vedic Moon sign is often one sign earlier than the one shown here.
