You have probably seen the listicles. Ten "perfect matches," a percentage score nobody can explain, and somehow every sign is soulmates with Libra.
Here is what those lists are usually built on, laid out plainly. The twelve signs sit on a wheel, and the number of steps between two signs decides the angle between them. Four steps apart is a trine: same element, the easy flow. Two apart is a sextile: fire with air, earth with water, the friendly spark. Six apart is the opposition, the sign straight across. Three apart is the square: same rhythm, clashing element.
That logic is old. Ptolemy's Tetrabiblos, written in the 2nd century, calls trines and sextiles harmonious and squares and oppositions disharmonious, and calls signs one or five apart "disjunct," with no aspect at all.
So we rank every sign the same way: trines, then sextiles, then the opposite, the same sign, the disjunct neighbours, and squares last. Inside each group, the order is our editorial read for that sign, written out on its own page. No percentages, because there is no honest way to compute one.
The four families
Fire, earth, air, water: who speaks whose language

Fire (Aries, Leo, Sagittarius) is the "let's go" group: warm, quick, direct. Fire signs get each other's need for momentum, and air signs keep the flame fed with ideas.
Earth (Taurus, Virgo, Capricorn) is the "let's build it" group: steady, sensual, practical. Earth signs trust follow-through, and water signs bring the feeling that makes the building worth it.
Air (Gemini, Libra, Aquarius) is the "let's talk about it" group: curious, social, mental. Air signs fall for a good mind, and fire signs turn the talk into plans.
Water (Cancer, Scorpio, Pisces) is the "let's feel it" group: intuitive, private, deep. Water signs read between lines, and earth signs give that depth somewhere safe to land.
The tricky combos are fire with water and earth with air. Those are where most squares and many quincunxes live, and they ask for translation. Translation is a skill, not a verdict.
Woman or man
Best match for a Scorpio woman versus a Scorpio man
People search "best match for Scorpio woman" and "best match for Leo man" as if the answer changes. Many horoscope columns write separate profiles for each, so it is a fair question.
In the tradition the rules come from, it does not change. A trine is a trine. Ptolemy's aspects are geometry, and they read the same for anyone.
What genuinely differs between two people with the same Sun sign is everything else: Moon, Venus, Mars, rising sign. Venus and Mars are in every chart, for every gender. Venus is commonly read as what you are drawn to and how you show affection; Mars as desire, pursuit and how you handle conflict.
So the honest answer to "best match for a Scorpio woman" is the Scorpio list, plus a look at her Venus. The same goes for a Scorpio man, or anyone.
Beyond the Sun
Your Venus is probably not in your Sun sign
We computed it. Across 16,436 days of births from 1965 to 2009, Venus was never more than 47.1° from the Sun. That means your Venus sign is your Sun sign or one of the two signs either side.
Most people do not share them. Depending on the Sun sign, only 20.1% (Libra) to 33.2% (Aries) have Venus in the same sign as the Sun.
Some of the results are surprising. The most common Venus for a Taurus is Aries. For a Leo it is Virgo. For a Pisces, Aries. If your best-match list ever felt wrong, your Venus might be why.

What is the best match for a Scorpio woman?
Cancer and Pisces, the other water signs, top the list, with Virgo and Capricorn close behind and Taurus as the magnetic opposite. The rule is the same for a Scorpio man. What differs between two Scorpios is their Venus and Mars, which you can check on the Scorpio page.
What is the best match for a Leo man?
Aries and Sagittarius (fellow fire signs) first, then Gemini and Libra. Aquarius is the opposite sign: strong pull, real work. The same list applies to a Leo woman.
Who is the best match for Aries?
Leo and Sagittarius. They share Aries' fire element, which astrologers read as the same pace and appetite for adventure. Gemini and Aquarius make easy, lively second choices, and Libra is the opposite that attracts.
Is zodiac compatibility different for women and men?
Not in the tradition the rules come from. Aspects between signs are geometry, and they read the same whatever your gender. Venus and Mars matter in every chart, for everyone, and they vary far more between two people of the same Sun sign than gender does.
Which zodiac signs are least compatible?
On paper, squares: signs three apart, which share a rhythm (cardinal, fixed or mutable) but clash in element, like Aries and Cancer or Leo and Scorpio. Plenty of square couples thrive. A square describes friction, and friction can be the thing that keeps two people interested.
Does my Venus sign matter more than my Sun sign for love?
Many astrologers would say Venus describes love style more directly. Venus is never more than about 47° from the Sun (47.1° in our sample), so it is either in your Sun sign or within two signs of it. Only 20.1% to 33.2% of people share their Sun and Venus sign, depending on the sign.
