At a glance

Your soulmate sign, in astrology, is first the sign on your Descendant (the cusp of your 7th house, opposite your rising sign). Then check the planet that rules it, your Venus sign and your Juno sign. The sign that shows up most is your answer.

The short answer

Your soulmate sign is a short list, not a single sign

A quiz asks what you like. Your chart says what you keep walking toward.Photo: Rahul Pandit / Burst

Try this today

  • Find your rising sign and say its opposite out loud. That is your Descendant.
  • Think of the two people you loved longest. Do either have Sun, Moon or rising in that sign?

You have probably taken the quiz. Pick a colour, pick a pizza topping, and congratulations, your soulmate is a Gemini. It is fun for thirty seconds and tells you nothing about you.

Astrology has a real answer, and it is older than the internet by about two thousand years. Hellenistic astrologers read partnership from the 7th house, the part of the sky setting in the west when you were born. The sign on its cusp is your Descendant, and it is always the sign opposite your rising sign. That is the first and strongest clue.

Then there are three more. The planet that rules your Descendant shows where partnership plays out in your life. Venus describes how you love and what makes you feel loved. Juno, an asteroid named for the Roman goddess of marriage, is what modern astrologers read for the committed partner.

When two or three of those name the same sign, pay attention. That is your soulmate signature.

Clue one

The Descendant: who you are looking for across the room

Your rising sign is the door you walk through. Your Descendant is who you hope is on the other side.Photo: Alex Nirta / Burst

The Ascendant and Descendant are the two ends of the horizon at your birth. One sign was coming up, the opposite one was going down. Astrologers say the Descendant shows the qualities you look for in a partner, often the ones you have not fully claimed yourself. Bold Aries rising wants Libra's grace; careful Virgo rising wants Pisces's softness.

Here is something most quiz sites skip: Descendants are not equally common. Signs rise at different speeds depending on your latitude. At New York's latitude, Taurus sits on the Descendant for 10.6% of births, while Libra gets only 5%. At London the gap is wider, and in Sydney it flips.

That is why your birth time matters. Two people born on the same day, a few hours apart, can have completely different Descendants.

Clue three

Your Venus sign: the love language your soulmate has to speak

On average only 23.6% of people share their Venus sign with their Sun sign.NASA/JPL-Caltech

Venus never wanders more than about 47° from the Sun, so for any Sun sign it can only be in five signs. We counted every day from 1950 to 2009 (21,915 days) to see how often each one comes up.

The surprise: for most Sun signs, the most common Venus is a neighbouring sign, not your own. A typical Taurus has Venus in Aries, a typical Scorpio has Venus in Scorpio, and a typical Pisces has Venus in Aries. Your Venus changes the soulmate picture a lot, because it describes what you actually find attractive and how you show love.

If your Venus sign matches your Descendant, or the sign of a partner's Sun or Moon, that is one of the strongest threads in synastry.

Clue four

Juno: the asteroid astrologers read for the one you marry

Venus is who you fall for. Juno is who you choose on a Tuesday.Photo: Leandro Almeida / Burst

Juno was the third asteroid ever found, in 1804, and astrologers adopted it in the 1970s as the marker of committed partnership. It is a modern addition, not part of the classical tradition, so treat it as a supporting clue.

Juno is slow and uneven. Over 1930 to 2040 it spends 12.9% of its time in Scorpio but only 4.6% in Gemini, because its orbit is tilted and stretched. Our calculator reads Juno from a JPL Horizons table, so you get the real sign for your birthday, not a guess.

Juno in the same element as your Descendant or Venus is a strong, consistent signature.

Clue two

The ruler of your Descendant: where love tends to find you

Every sign has a ruling planet, and the one that rules your Descendant is the second clue. Gemini on the 7th? Look at Mercury. Capricorn? Look at Saturn. The sign that planet sits in adds its own flavour to the partner picture, and the house it sits in hints at where you are likely to meet. We use the traditional rulers here, so Scorpio goes to Mars, Aquarius to Saturn and Pisces to Jupiter, the way Hellenistic astrologers read them.

Opposites

Why the opposite sign is the classic soulmate answer

Opposite signs always share a mode (cardinal, fixed or mutable) and pair complementary elements: Fire with Air, Earth with Water. Ptolemy's Tetrabiblos lists the opposition among the classical aspects. In love astrology it reads as attraction with tension: the other person has what you are missing.

Quick answers

What zodiac sign is my soulmate?

Start with your Descendant, the sign opposite your rising sign. Then check its ruling planet, your Venus and your Juno. The sign that comes up two or three times is your soulmate signature.

What zodiac sign is the soulmate of Scorpio?

Taurus is the traditional answer, the opposite sign and the Descendant for Scorpio risings. For Scorpio Suns, Venus is most often in Scorpio (32%).

What is the Aries soulmate sign?

Libra, the sign across the wheel and the Descendant for Aries risings. An Aries Sun's Venus is most often in Aries, which adds a second clue.

Is there a soulmate zodiac sign quiz that actually works?

A quiz guesses from your preferences. Your birth chart answers from your Descendant, Venus and Juno. The calculator on this page does the chart version in a minute.

Can I find my soulmate sign without a birth time?

Partly. Without a time we cannot find your Descendant, so we use your Sun's opposite sign, plus Venus and Juno, which barely change over a day.

Does my soulmate have to be my opposite sign?

No. The opposite sign is the classic pull, but trines, sextiles and your Venus element often matter more for everyday harmony. A full synastry chart is the real test.

Is the Descendant or Juno more important for a soulmate?

Traditional astrology puts the Descendant and its ruler first. Juno is a modern supporting clue. When both agree, astrologers read it as a strong signature.
