Descendant sign calculator
The sign setting in the west the minute you were born. It is the mirror of your rising sign, and the oldest chart point astrologers read for partners.

What it is
The point where your sky set

Try this today
- List three people who changed your life by being nothing like you. Notice what they share.
- Look up your rising sign, then flip it. Does the opposite sign describe your type a little too well?
- Compare your Descendant with your partner's or best friend's Sun sign.
Picture the moment you were born. Somewhere in the east, a degree of the zodiac was climbing over the horizon: that is your Ascendant, your rising sign. Directly across, on the western horizon, another degree was slipping down out of sight. That one is your Descendant.
It is not a planet, and it is not a guess. It is geometry: the ecliptic crosses your local horizon at two points, and they sit exactly 180 degrees apart. So if you know your rising sign, you already know your Descendant sign. Scorpio rising? Taurus Descendant. Virgo rising? Pisces.
Astrologers since Hellenistic times have read that western angle as the place of the other: partners, spouses, open rivals, the people you sign things with. The 7th house starts here. Rising is how you walk into a room. The Descendant is who you keep finding across the table.
How the calculator works
From birth time to the western horizon

The calculator converts your local birth time to Universal Time (with that city's daylight-saving rules for that date), finds the local sidereal time, and solves for the Ascendant with the same formula our birth chart uses. Then it adds 180 degrees. That is the whole trick, and it is why the Descendant is only as good as your birth time.
How good does the time need to be? The Descendant changes sign every hour or two, so a time rounded to the hour can land you on the wrong side of a boundary. If your result is within 15 minutes of a sign change, the calculator tells you so and links both pages.
No birth time? Tick "I don't know my birth time" and the tool scans your whole birth day instead, listing every sign that held the Descendant and for how many hours. Most days give you every sign at least once, but not equally.
The sky behind it
Ascendant from mean sidereal time and mean obliquity (lib/rising.ts), Descendant = Ascendant + 180°. Tropical zodiac. Whole-sign 7th house = the Descendant sign.
The numbers
Why some Descendants are rarer than others

You would expect each sign to hold the Descendant for two hours a day. It does not. Because the zodiac is tilted against the equator, some signs rise at a steep angle and others lie almost flat, and the flat ones slide across the horizon fast.
Signs that rise slowly set quickly, and the reverse. At New York's latitude, Virgo and Libra hold the Descendant for only 1 h 11 min a day, while Taurus and Aquarius hold it for 2 h 33 min, about 2.1 times longer. Further north the gap widens: in London the longest span is 3.3 times the shortest.
Cross the equator and the order flips. In Sydney the rarest Descendant is Aries, and Scorpio is among the most common. At the equator itself the spread is gentle. The table below has all six latitudes we computed.

Houses
Descendant vs 7th house: the same thing?

Nearly. In whole-sign houses, the oldest system, your entire Descendant sign is your 7th house, start to finish. In Placidus or Koch, the Descendant degree is the exact cusp of the 7th, and the house can spill into the next sign, so a planet in the first degrees of the following sign may still count as 7th house.
Either way the Descendant sign and its ruling planet are the same, and that ruler is where most astrologers start: Venus for a Libra Descendant, Pluto (traditionally Mars) for Scorpio. Where that planet sits in your chart says where partnership plays out for you.

When someone's planet sits on your Descendant
In synastry, astrologers look for the other person's planets landing on your Descendant degree or in your 7th house. Their Sun or Venus there is a classic "I see you" contact. It is a theme to notice, not a verdict on whether a relationship works.

Quick answers
What is my Descendant sign?
The sign opposite your rising sign. Aries rising has Libra, Taurus has Scorpio, Gemini has Sagittarius, Cancer has Capricorn, Leo has Aquarius, Virgo has Pisces, and the other way round. Use the calculator for the exact degree.
Can I find my Descendant without a birth time?
Not exactly, because it changes sign every one to three hours. Leave the time blank and the calculator lists every Descendant sign possible on your birth day, with the hours each one held.
Is the Descendant the same as the 7th house?
In whole-sign houses the Descendant sign is the whole 7th house. In Placidus and similar systems the Descendant degree is the 7th-house cusp and the house can reach into the next sign.
What does 7th house in Scorpio mean?
Taurus rising, with intense, private, all-or-nothing partnerships as the theme, and Pluto (traditionally Mars) as the 7th-house ruler. Full page at Descendant in Scorpio.
What does Descendant in Leo mean?
Aquarius rising, drawn to warm, expressive, confident partners who make you feel seen. The Sun rules your 7th house. Full page at Descendant in Leo.
Does my Descendant show my soulmate's sign?
Not literally. It describes qualities you look for and meet in close partners, which often show up in their chart in several ways, not just their Sun sign.
Which Descendant sign is the rarest?
It depends on latitude. At New York's latitude Virgo and Libra are rarest (1 h 11 min a day). In the southern hemisphere the order flips: in Sydney Aries is rarest.
