The short answer
What you can know without a birth time

Try this today
- Run your birthday in the calculator below and count how many signs rose. Then pick the one clue you are surest of.
- Text the oldest relative who was there. Ask for anything: daylight or dark, before or after a meal, a TV show that was on.
- Write down the two or three signs your clue allows. Read about each and notice which one sounds like how strangers describe you.
Exact rising sign calculator (with time)Your big three in one go
You found the app, you typed in your birthday, and then the box asked for a time. Nobody wrote it down. Your mom says "early-ish." Fair.
Here is what is actually going on. Your rising sign, or Ascendant, is the zodiac sign that was coming up over the eastern horizon at the minute you were born. Because the Earth spins once a day, the whole zodiac wheels past that horizon roughly once every 24 hours. A new sign rises every hour or two.
So your birth date and town do not give you one rising sign. They give you a timetable. Born in New York on October 18, 2026? The day opened with Cancer rising at midnight, Libra was up as the city woke at 7 am, Sagittarius held the horizon at noon, and by bedtime it was back around to Cancer. That is all 12 signs in one day.
That timetable is genuinely useful. It tells you which signs are on the table, how long each one had, and how much a fuzzy clue like "before breakfast" really narrows things. It also tells you what you can trust right now: your Sun sign (almost always) and often your Moon sign.
The sky behind it
The Ascendant is the point of the ecliptic on the eastern horizon: asc = atan2(cos RAMC, -(sin RAMC cos ε + tan φ sin ε)), with RAMC the local sidereal time in degrees, ε the obliquity and φ the latitude. Ascendant from Greenwich apparent sidereal time and true obliquity (skyfield, DE442 timescale), cross-checked against an independent horizon-intersection solve; sign changes found on a 1-2 minute grid and refined to 0.5 s. Sunrise/sunset: skyfield almanac (Sun's upper limb, standard refraction).

Why the windows differ
Some signs rise in an hour. Others take two and a half.

Try this today
- Look at your strip in the calculator. Wide blocks are slow risers; thin slivers are fast ones.
- If two thin blocks sit inside your clue, do not pick one yet. That is a real tie until you find the time.
How rare is each rising sign? (Study 04)Why your rising sign can look "wrong"
If the zodiac rose evenly, every sign would get two hours. It does not, and the reason is a tilt. The Sun's path (the ecliptic) is tipped about 23.4° against the Earth's equator, so some stretches of it come over the horizon nearly side-on and slide up slowly, while others shoot up almost head-first.
Astrologers have noticed this for a long time. Ptolemy's Tetrabiblos (Book I) already pairs up signs that rise in equal times, and the traditional names stuck: signs of long ascension and signs of short ascension. North of the equator the long ones run from Cancer to Sagittarius and the short ones from Capricorn to Gemini. South of the equator it flips.
The effect grows with latitude. In New York, Leo, Virgo, Libra and Scorpio each take about 2 h 33 min, while Aries and Pisces take about 1 h 11 min. In London the slowest sign gets 3.3 times as long as the quickest. Near the equator the gap shrinks: Mumbai's range is 95 to 134 minutes. In Sydney the order reverses and Taurus becomes one of the slow risers.
For you, this means a vague birth time is not equally vague for every sign. If your window lands on a slow riser, even a rough clue can settle it. If it lands on a fast one, you may need the time to within half an hour.
The sky behind it
Minutes are measured for each sign's first complete rising after 2026-10-18 00:00 UTC, from the instants the Ascendant crosses each 30° boundary (found on a 2-minute grid, refined to half a second). Because they depend on the sidereal day and the obliquity, they shift by well under a minute from year to year.

The best clue you might have
The sunrise shortcut, and its sunset twin

Try this today
- Ask: was it light or dark? "Dark" alone cuts the day roughly in half.
- Use the "Around sunrise" or "Around sunset" chip in the calculator. It uses the real sunrise for your town and date.
Some families remember one thing: "the sun was just coming up." That is a gift, because it pins your rising sign almost on its own.
At sunrise the Sun sits right on the eastern horizon, and the eastern horizon is your Ascendant. So someone born at dawn usually has the same rising sign as Sun sign, a "double." The only catch is the first degree or so of a sign: sunrise is counted when the Sun's upper edge, lifted a little by the atmosphere, appears, while its centre is still just below the horizon. So the Ascendant runs about a degree behind the Sun and can still be in the sign before.
Here is how it looked in New York on October 18, 2026, sunrise was at 7:10 am. The Ascendant was at 24°12′ Libra and the Sun at 25°05′ Libra: same sign, about a degree between them. The table below shows the same pattern in five other cities.
Sunset works in mirror image. When the Sun is setting in the west, the sign opposite it is rising in the east. On October 18, 2026 the Sun was in Libra and at sunset New York had Aries rising. And noon? The Sun is high in the south, so the rising sign is usually two to four signs after your Sun sign (in New York at noon on that date: Sagittarius).
The sky behind it
Sunrise and sunset are the moments the Sun's upper limb touches the horizon with standard refraction (skyfield almanac, DE442). The Ascendant at that instant is computed as above and cross-checked by the horizon solve.
| City | Sunrise (local) | Ascendant at sunrise | Sun at sunrise | Sunset (local) | Ascendant at sunset |
|---|---|---|---|---|---|
| New York | 07:10 | 24°12′ Libra | 25°05′ Libra | 18:11 | 27°21′ Aries |
| Los Angeles | 07:00 | 24°21′ Libra | 25°12′ Libra | 18:14 | 27°09′ Aries |
| Toronto | 07:35 | 24°12′ Libra | 25°06′ Libra | 18:29 | 27°34′ Aries |
| London | 07:29 | 23°55′ Libra | 24°54′ Libra | 18:00 | 28°18′ Aries |
| Sydney | 06:10 | 22°56′ Libra | 24°25′ Libra | 19:10 | 25°49′ Aries |
| Mumbai | 06:33 | 23°50′ Libra | 24°40′ Libra | 18:13 | 26°15′ Aries |

Where your birth time might be hiding

Try this today
- Search your home for the word "time" on any birth paperwork. It is often in a small box near the hospital name.
- If a relative gives you a time, ask how they remember it. A story ("the nurse said") beats a round number ("about 3").
It is worth one honest search before you settle for a range. A time that is right to within 15 minutes usually locks your rising sign for good.
The long-form birth certificate. Many short-form certificates leave the time off while the full record has it. In the US, certificates come from the vital records office of the state where you were born, and the CDC keeps a directory of every office and how to order from it.
Where you were born matters. Scotland's birth registers have recorded the time of every birth since civil registration began in 1855. In England and Wales the time is usually written only for twins and other multiple births, so you may need hospital notes or family records instead.
The people and paper around you. Hospital discharge papers, a baby book, a birth announcement, a christening card, even a scrapbook. If a parent remembers "right after the night shift changed" or "during the evening news," that is a real clue. Put it into the calculator as a guess and set how sure you are.

Rectification, solar charts, and what quizzes cannot do

Try this today
- List five dated turning points in your life. If you ever try rectification, that list is the raw material.
- Read the two or three signs your clues allow side by side. Notice, do not decide.
Your big three, with the uncertain ones flaggedWhat your descendant sign says about partners
Some times are simply gone. That is okay, and you still have options.
Use a solar chart. Many astrologers put your Sun sign on the Ascendant and count the houses from there, one sign per house. It will not give you a rising sign, but it gives transits and horoscopes a framework, and it is what most Sun-sign columns quietly assume.
Rectification. This is the astrologer's practice of working backwards from dated life events (moves, marriages, losses, big job changes) to test which birth times fit. It is a craft with real skill involved, not a measurement, and two careful astrologers can land on different answers. If you try it, start from the shortlist of rising signs the calculator gives you, not from scratch.
Skip the "find your rising sign" quiz. It is fun to see which sign you relate to, but the rising sign is a position in the sky. Answering questions about your vibe cannot change what was on the horizon. Treat the quiz as a mood ring and the calculator as the map.

The Moon
Your Moon sign may be unsure too
The Moon moves fast, changing sign every 2.27 days on average (1.96 to 2.54 days in 2026). It changed sign on 160 of 365 UTC days in 2026, and will do so on 160 of 365 in 2027. October 18, 2026 was one of those days: in New York the Moon started the day at 19°15′ Capricorn and ended it at 1°09′ Aquarius. The calculator tells you if your birth day was one too.

High latitudes
Born far north or far south?
The farther from the equator, the more lopsided the day. In Reykjavik (64.1° N) Aries rises in about 13 minutes and Leo takes 3 h 37 min. Inside the polar circles some degrees of the zodiac can skip rising altogether on a given day, and house systems such as Placidus break down there. The calculator still lists what actually rose.

Quick answers
Can I find my rising sign without my birth time?
Not exactly, but you can get close. Your birth date and town tell you every sign that rose that day and when. Outside the polar regions that is usually all 12, each for somewhere between about an hour and two and a half hours. Add any clue about the time (morning, after school pickup, around dawn) and the list shrinks fast. The calculator above does that for you.
What is my rising sign if I don't know my birth time?
It is one of the signs listed for your birth day, and you cannot know which without a time. Many astrologers use a "solar chart" meanwhile: they put your Sun sign on the Ascendant and read the houses from there. It works well for transits and your Sun, Mercury, Venus and Mars, but it is not your real rising sign.
How do I find my rising sign by birth date only?
Enter the date and the birth town above. You get the rising sign for every minute of that day as a strip of windows. On October 18, 2026 in New York, for example, Leo, Virgo, Libra and Scorpio each rose for about 2 h 33 min while Pisces and Aries lasted about 1 h 11 min each.
If I was born at sunrise, is my rising sign my Sun sign?
Usually, yes. At sunrise the Sun sits on the eastern horizon, so the rising sign is your Sun sign or, if the Sun is in the first degree of a sign, the sign just before it. In New York on October 18, 2026, sunrise was 7:10 am and the Ascendant was at 24°12′ Libra with the Sun at 25°05′ Libra. Born around sunset? Your rising sign is usually the sign opposite your Sun.
Which rising sign is most likely without a birth time?
The slow-rising signs. In New York they are Leo, Virgo, Libra and Scorpio (about 2 h 33 min each), and the quickest are Aries and Pisces (about 1 h 11 min). The farther from the equator you were born, the bigger the gap: in London it is 3.3 to 1. In the southern hemisphere the pattern flips.
Does my Moon sign also need a birth time?
Sometimes. The Moon changes sign every 2.27 days on average, and in 2026 it changed sign on 160 of 365 UTC calendar days (44%). On those days the time decides your Moon sign as well. The calculator tells you whether your birth day was one of them, and at what local time the Moon moved.
Where can I find my birth time?
Start with the long-form birth certificate, hospital records, a baby book or a family member's memory. In the US, state vital records offices issue certificates and the CDC keeps a directory of them. Scottish birth registers have recorded the time for every birth since 1855; in England and Wales the time usually appears only for twins and other multiple births.
Is a rising sign quiz accurate?
A quiz can tell you which sign you identify with, which is interesting, but it cannot tell you what was rising when you were born. The rising sign is a position in the sky, not a personality type. Use the calculator for the possibilities, then let real clues about your birth time do the narrowing.
