The verdict first

Leo (22 July to 22 August in most years) is fixed Fire, ruled by the Sun. Scorpio (23 October to 21 November) is fixed Water, ruled by Mars in the older system and by Pluto in modern astrology. Three signs apart, your Suns form a square, the 90-degree angle astrologers read as friction that gets things done.

So the honest answer to "do Leo and Scorpio match?" is: not easily, and often very well. You will not drift apart out of boredom. You might dig in over something small and stay dug in for a week. Most of what decides this pairing is how the two of you handle that second part.

Why this square bites harder than most

A square on its own is workable. What makes Leo and Scorpio a famous difficult match is that both signs are fixed. In the zodiac's three modes, cardinal signs start things, mutable signs adapt, and fixed signs hold. Leo and Scorpio sit in the middle of their seasons (high summer and deep autumn in the northern hemisphere), and both are built to keep a position once they have taken it.

Put two holders in a square and you get two people who each think the other should move first. Leo holds out of pride: backing down in public feels like losing face. Scorpio holds out of memory: backing down feels like agreeing that the hurt did not happen.

The ruling planets sharpen it. Leo's ruler is the Sun, which wants to be seen. • ✦You never share a Mercury sign. A Leo's Mercury is in Cancer, Leo or Virgo. A Scorpio's is in Libra, Scorpio or Sagittarius. There is no overlap, so you will always think and argue in different styles. About one pair in five (22%) has Mercury in the same element: a Leo with Mercury in Cancer and a Scorpio with Mercury in Scorpio both process through feeling, and a Leo with Mercury in Leo and a Scorpio with Mercury in Sagittarius both talk in big, sure statements. • ✦You rarely share a Venus sign, about 5% of pairs. It can only happen in Virgo or Libra. A Leo's Venus is never in Scorpio, and a Scorpio's Venus is never in Leo. A normal week

Picture a Friday dinner with friends. Leo tells the story of the week, does the voices, gets the laugh. Scorpio watches the table and notices who did not laugh. On the way home Scorpio mentions it. That is most Leo and Scorpio friction: a mismatch of channels. Leo processes out loud and in company. Scorpio processes alone and reports the conclusion. Both are ways of caring. In bed and in love

Attraction is the part nobody has to work on. Scorpio is one of the few signs that looks straight past Leo's show and wants the person behind it, and being seen that closely, rather than applauded, is what Leo wants most and admits least. Leo, in turn, walks into Scorpio's guarded life with warmth and does not flinch at the depth.

Physically, both signs are fixed, so both like intensity that lasts rather than variety. Leo wants to be wanted, openly and often. Scorpio wants trust first and then everything. Money and work

At work you divide naturally. Leo is front of house: the pitch, the client dinner, the team's morale on a bad week. Scorpio is back of house: the numbers, the politics, the contract clause everyone else missed.
