Leo dates22 July to 23 August, and earlier than you were told

Ask a search engine when Leo begins and you will often get 23 July. For someone born in the United States in the last few years that answer is a day late. Using the exact instant the Sun reaches 120° of longitude, the start of Leo, Shymea counted the local date of every Leo ingress from 1951 to 2030. In US Eastern time Leo began on 22 July in all 10 years from 2021 to 2030. In the 1950s it began on 22 July only 4 times and on 23 July 6 times.

The shift is steady and it has a mechanical cause. The Gregorian calendar drops three leap days every 400 years to stay in line with the seasons. It dropped one in 1900 and kept the leap day in 2000, so for more than a century nothing has pulled the dates back, and each solstice, equinox and sign change has been arriving nearly 19 hours per century earlier on the calendar. The next correction is the skipped leap day of 2100. Until then the 22 July start will only get more firmly established.

Where 23 July comes from is the other half of the story. Many of the tables still copied today go back to the mid-twentieth century, when 23 July was the more common start even in New York: 15 of the 30 years from 1951 to 1980. Britain kept it longer. London is five hours ahead of New York in July, so an ingress late on 22 July in US time is already 23 July there. Across the 80 years, Leo began on 23 July in London 41 times and on 22 July 39 times; in the 1950s the UK figure for 23 July was 8 in 10. A British table from 1955 that said "Leo, 23 July" was accurate. Copied onto an American website in 2025, it is not.

The year 2027 shows how a single ingress produces both dates. The Sun enters Leo on 23 July 2027 at 01:05 UTC. That is 23 July in London and on any site that prints UTC, but it is 9:05 pm on 22 July in New York and 6:05 pm on 22 July in Los Angeles. A baby born in Chicago on the evening of 22 July 2027 after 8:05 pm Central time is a Leo, whatever the 23 July table says.

Australia is the exception that keeps the old date alive. Sydney is ten hours ahead of UTC in July, so there Leo began on 23 July in 66 of the 80 years and still does in 6 of the 10 years from 2021 to 2030. The honest summary: 22 July in the Americas, 22 or 23 July in the UK, usually 23 July in Australia.

The end of Leo has moved too. Virgo began on 23 August (US Eastern) in every year of the 1950s, and on 22 August in 8 of the 10 years from 2021 to 2030. A US Leo born on 22 August in a recent year may well be a Virgo, and the zodiac sign calculator will tell you which from the birth time.

Leo is the most common Sun sign in the United States. Of 62,187,026 births registered from 2000 to 2014, 5,572,150 were Leos, or 8.96%, which ranks first of twelve. Virgo is a very close second, at 8.94%, so the lead is real but narrow: about fifteen thousand births over fifteen years. Capricorn, the rarest, was 7.63%. The interesting part is why. Length is not the reason. The Sun spends 31.29 days in Leo, which is long, but Cancer (31.45) and Gemini (31.33) are longer, and neither beats Leo. What lifts Leo is the American birth calendar, which peaks in late July and August. The study measures this with a ratio: the sign's actual share of births divided by the share it would get from its days alone. In 2014, Leo took 9.16% of US births against an expected 8.57%, a ratio of 1.069, the highest of any sign. Leo is common because of when Americans are born, not because the Sun lingers there.

Other countries rank Leo differently, which is the clearest sign that the effect is social and seasonal rather than astronomical. Leo is first in Canada (8.95%) and first in New York City, but third in England and Wales, where Gemini leads, and third in Australia. If someone tells you Leo is rare, the registry data says the opposite in every country counted.

For a US birth on 22 July the answer is usually "it depends on the hour": the Sun moved into Leo during that day in 56 of 80 years in Eastern time. On 23 July the day was wholly Leo in 56 years and a changeover day in the other 24, only one of them since 2010. At the other end, 22 August was entirely Leo in 48 years and a changeover day in 32; 23 August was a changeover day in 48 years and wholly Virgo in 32.

A Sun at 29° Cancer is a Cancer Sun and a Sun at 0° Leo is a Leo Sun; nothing in the tradition blends them. What can be uncertain is the birth time. If the record says only "evening", a 22 July birth in a year when the ingress was at 9 pm is genuinely undecided, and a chart with a guessed time should be read with that in mind. Jupiter entered Leo on 30 June 2026 and leaves on 26 July 2027, its first full stay in the sign since 2014 to 2015. For a Leo Sun this is the Jupiter transit through the whole-sign first house of the solar chart, and for Leos born in 2014 and 2015 it is also their first Jupiter return. After its retrograde loop Jupiter turns direct on 13 April at 02:11 UTC (10:11 pm EDT on 12 April) at 17°00′ Leo. A station sits on one degree for days, and 17° Leo is the Sun degree of people born around 8 or 9 August.

Mars complicates the spring. It turns retrograde in Virgo in January, backs into Leo on 21 February at 29°59′, and turns direct on 1 April at 20°56′ Leo, close to the Sun degree of birthdays around 12 to 13 August. The Leo Full Moon of the year falls early, on 22 January at 2°14′.

The headline event is the total solar eclipse on 2 August 2027 at 10:05 UTC (6:05 am EDT), at 9°55′ Leo. That degree is the Sun of Leos born around 1 or 2 August, and it lands a week after Jupiter has left for Virgo. In Leo the two decan systems agree on two decans of three. The Chaldean faces give Saturn, Jupiter and Mars. The triplicity scheme gives Leo, Sagittarius and Aries, so the Sun, Jupiter and Mars. Only the first decan differs: Saturn's face, the planet in detriment in the sign, sits over the opening ten days, roughly 22 July to 1 August. That is also where the 2027 eclipse falls.

Leos born up to 1957 have Pluto in their own sign, and Uranus followed it in from 10 June 1956, so Leo birthdays from 1956 to 1961 carry Uranus in Leo. Saturn's two recent visits make two cohorts: the Leos of 1976 and 1977, and those of 2005 to 2007, whose Saturn return arrives in the mid-2030s, when Saturn re-enters Leo on 27 August 2034. Every Leo born in 2026 has Jupiter in Leo, and so do those born from 23 to 26 July 2027.
