Gemini dates21 May to 21 June, and one of the commonest signs

No. On the evidence of five birth registries it is among the most common signs there are. The Shymea rarity study assigned 62,187,026 US births from 2000 to 2014 to their exact Sun sign using the ingress instants, and 5,324,042 of them were Gemini, 8.56% of the total. That puts Gemini fourth of twelve in the United States, behind Leo, Virgo and Cancer and comfortably above the 8.33% a perfectly even year would give.

Outside the US it does better still. Gemini was the single most common sign in England and Wales in 2025, at 8.83% of births, and again in Australia in 2023, at 8.77%. It came fourth in Canada in 2024 (8.68%) and fifth in New York City in 2024 (8.51%). Only two signs top any of the five registries in the study: Gemini takes England and Wales and Australia, and Leo the other three.

The main reason is astronomical. The Sun spends 31.33 days in Gemini on average, longer than in any sign except Cancer (31.45 days), and more days in a sign means more birthdays. Earth reaches aphelion, its farthest point from the Sun, in early July and moves slowest then, so the Sun's apparent progress along the zodiac is slowest in the weeks either side: a little under a degree a day, against just over a degree a day in January. Capricorn, crossed near perihelion, gets 29.44 days, almost two fewer than Gemini.

Then there is the question of when babies arrive. For some signs the calendar of births pulls against the astronomy; for Gemini it hardly matters. On the Sun's time alone Gemini would have taken 8.58% of US births in 2014, and the recorded figure was 8.62%, a ratio of 1.005. Gemini's share is almost exactly what its days predict, whereas the spring signs before it are born slightly less often than their days would suggest.

Keep the scale in proportion, though. The gap between the most common US sign, Leo at 8.96%, and the rarest, Capricorn at 7.63%, is little more than a percentage point. A Gemini is between eight and nine in every hundred people born, which is ordinary. The genuinely uncommon things about a Gemini chart lie elsewhere: a Gemini Sun born with Uranus also in Gemini, for instance, can only come from the years 2026 to 2032 (see below), and the rising sign, which changes every couple of hours, sorts people far more finely than the Sun does. The Sun enters Gemini at 60° of ecliptic longitude, and over 1951 to 2030 that moment fell on 21 May in US Eastern time in 41 years and on 20 May in 39. The total looks balanced; the trend is not. The 1950s had 2 years starting on the 20th, and 2021 to 2030 has 8, with only 2023 and 2027 on the 21st. On the West Coast the 20th now wins outright: 48 of the 80 years in Pacific time.

London still leans to the old date: Gemini began there on 21 May in 58 of the 80 years, though 2021 to 2030 splits 5 and 5. Sydney, ten hours ahead of UTC in May, starts on 21 May in 66 years and on 22 May in 11.

The far end of Gemini is the June solstice, because Cancer begins at the solstice exactly as Aries begins at the March equinox. Gemini closes northern spring on the longest day of the year. In US Eastern time the solstice came on 21 June in 64 of the 80 years, on 22 June in 2 (1951 and 1955) and on 20 June in 14. Those 20 June years began only in 1988: 1988, 1992, 1996, 2000, 2004, 2008, 2012, 2016, 2020, 2021, 2024, 2025, 2028 and 2029. A 20 June birth in the US used to be safely Gemini; in many recent years it has been Cancer by the evening.

Uranus first entered Gemini on 7 July 2025, went back into Taurus on 8 November 2025, and returned on 26 April 2026. It stays until 3 August 2032, then makes one retrograde visit from 12 December 2032 to 22 May 2033 before moving on to Cancer. Those are DE442 dates in UTC. Uranus takes about 84 years to circle the zodiac, so the previous Uranus-in-Gemini years were the 1940s.

For birth charts that means every Gemini born from 2026 to 2032 has Uranus in their own sign, plus anyone born from 20 to 22 May 2033. Saturn joins it in Gemini from 1 June 2030 to 14 July 2032, so Geminis born in 2031 and 2032, and those born from 1 to 21 June 2030, will have the Sun, Saturn and Uranus all in Gemini.

For Geminis already born, the dates that matter are the years Uranus crosses their own Sun degree. In 2027 it turns direct on 8 February at 1°41′ Gemini and retrograde on 15 September at 9°57′, which puts it on the Sun of people born from about 22 to 31 May. The full schedule by birthday:

Find the year and your zone. A birth after the Gemini time and before the Cancer time has the Sun in Gemini. The last two columns are the June solstice in New York and in Sydney, where it is the shortest day rather than the longest.

Read 21 May in the US Eastern column and it is Gemini all day in 39 years and a changeover day in 41. It is never Taurus all day, so a 21 May birth is at least partly Gemini every year. 21 June is the harder date. In Eastern time it was a changeover day in 64 of the 80 years, wholly Cancer in 14 and wholly Gemini in only 2, so most 21 June births need the hour. June. About 66% of the sign falls in June and 34% in May, from roughly the 21st of one to the 21st of the next.

The constellation is another matter. By the International Astronomical Union's boundaries the Sun was in the stars of Taurus from 14 May 2026 and reached the constellation Gemini only at about 22:00 UTC on 21 June, more than half a day after the sign Gemini had ended. Throughout tropical Gemini in 2026 the Sun stood in front of Taurus. Precession has moved the equinox, and with it the signs, most of a sign's width against the stars since the zodiac was set. Western astrology keeps the season-based signs; the sidereal zodiac used in India follows the stars and puts its Gemini roughly from mid-June to mid-July.

A small irony in the faces: the first ten degrees of Gemini belong to Jupiter, the planet that is in detriment in the sign as a whole, then Mars, then the Sun, following the Chaldean order on from Taurus. The modern triplicity scheme reads the decans as Gemini, Libra and Aquarius, so Mercury, Venus and Uranus (or Saturn). Two sources describing "the second decan of Gemini" can therefore mean Mars or Venus, and a good one says which.

The geometry of the houses sets up a neat opposition. Mercury's two signs face Jupiter's two: Gemini opposite Sagittarius, Virgo opposite Pisces.
