Why Capricorn is the rarest and shortest zodiac sign
Capricorn is the rarest Sun sign for two separate reasons, and they stack. The first is orbital. Every sign is exactly 30° of the ecliptic, but the Sun does not cover those degrees at a steady pace. Earth reaches perihelion, its nearest point to the Sun, at the start of January, about 147 million km away against roughly 152 million km at aphelion in early July. Nearer means faster, by Kepler's second law, so in early January the Sun appears to slide along the zodiac at about 61 minutes of arc per day, and in early July at about 57. Capricorn is the sign that holds perihelion. It gets crossed at full speed.
Measured over 1951 to 2030 from the DE442 ingress instants, the Sun takes 29.44 days to cross Capricorn. Cancer, the opposite sign, takes 31.45. That gap of about two days is the whole of the orbital effect, and it puts Capricorn at the bottom of the table below. A sign that lasts fewer days collects fewer birthdays.
| Sign | Average days, 1951 to 2030 | Shortest to longest |
|---|---|---|
| Cancer | 31.45 | 31.45 to 31.46 |
| Gemini | 31.33 | 31.32 to 31.34 |
| Leo | 31.29 | 31.29 to 31.30 |
| Taurus | 30.97 | 30.95 to 30.98 |
| Virgo | 30.90 | 30.89 to 30.91 |
| Aries | 30.46 | 30.45 to 30.48 |
| Libra | 30.39 | 30.37 to 30.40 |
| Pisces | 29.96 | 29.95 to 29.97 |
| Scorpio | 29.90 | 29.88 to 29.91 |
| Aquarius | 29.59 | 29.58 to 29.60 |
| Sagittarius | 29.55 | 29.55 to 29.56 |
| Capricorn | 29.44 | 29.44 to 29.45 |
On days alone, Capricorn would hold 8.06% of births. The registry numbers come in lower. In the Shymea study of 62 million US births, which assigns each of 62,187,026 registered births from 2000 to 2014 to its sign using the exact ingress times, 4,747,374 were Capricorns: 7.63%, twelfth and last of the twelve. In 2014 alone the share was 7.60%, which is 0.943 of what the calendar predicts. Roughly six Capricorn birthdays in every hundred that the days would allow are missing.
That second shortfall is the holiday dip, and it shows up in the data as a calendar effect rather than anything astrological. The first decan of Capricorn contains 24, 25 and 26 December, and the second contains 31 December and 1 January. A large share of modern births are scheduled, by induction or planned caesarean, and hospitals and families schedule fewer of them on holidays. The registry counts for those days are low, and those low days happen to sit inside Capricorn. Sagittarius and Aquarius, either side of it, fall short by far less in the same study, so the effect belongs to late December rather than to winter.
Other countries' registries put Capricorn in the same place. It was 7.58% of births in England and Wales in 2025 (twelfth), 7.54% in Australia in 2023 (twelfth), and 7.93% in New York City in 2024 (twelfth). Canada is the one exception in the study, where Capricorn came eleventh with 7.69% in 2024. An even split would give every sign 8.33%.
| Registry | Capricorn share | Rank (1 = most common) |
|---|---|---|
| United States, 2000 to 2014 (62,187,026 births) | 7.63% | twelfth of 12 |
| England & Wales, 2025 | 7.58% | twelfth of 12 |
| Canada, 2024 | 7.69% | eleventh of 12 |
| Australia, 2023 | 7.54% | twelfth of 12 |
| New York City, 2024 | 7.93% | twelfth of 12 |
Rarest is a statistical word here and nothing more. About one American in thirteen is a Capricorn, and the ranking says nothing about character, luck or fate.
Capricorn dates by year, 1980 to 2030
Each row is one Capricorn season, so the start column is December of the year shown and the end column is the following January. The 2026 row ends in January 2027. A birth after the start time and before the end time, in your zone, is a Capricorn birth.

Is 21 December Capricorn? The solstice is the first moment of the sign
The December solstice and the start of Capricorn are the same instant by definition. The tropical zodiac measures signs from the equinoxes and solstices, and 270° of solar longitude, where the Sun stops moving south and turns back, is the first degree of Capricorn. Ptolemy says this plainly in the Tetrabiblos (I.11): Capricorn is one of the two solstitial signs, named "from what takes place in them. For the sun turns when he is at the beginning of these signs." When the news says the solstice is at a certain minute, that minute is when Capricorn begins.
In US Eastern time the solstice fell on 21 December in 57 of the 80 years from 1951 to 2030 and on 22 December in 23. The 22nd has dropped away: since 2000 it has happened only in 2003, 2007 and 2011, and in the ten years 2021 to 2030 the count for 21 December is 10 out of 10, in Central and Pacific time as well. In 2025 the moment came at 10:03 am Eastern, in 2026 at 3:50 pm, and in 2027 it is 9:42 pm Eastern on 21 December. That 2027 solstice shows how the zone decides the date: in London it is 2:42 am on 22 December.
The UK splits evenly over the long run, 40 years on the 21st and 40 on the 22nd, and still has the 22nd in 2023 and 2027. In Sydney Capricorn starts on 22 December in 69 of 80 years, on the 21st only in the leap years 2004, 2008, 2012, 2016, 2020, 2024 and 2028, and on 23 December in 1951, 1955, 1959 and 1963. In Australia the same instant is the summer solstice, so a Sydney Capricorn season opens on the longest day of the year, not the shortest.
| Decade | Years Capricorn began on 22 December (US Eastern) |
|---|---|
| 1950s | 6 of 10 |
| 1960s | 4 of 10 |
| 1970s | 6 of 10 |
| 1980s | 2 of 10 |
| 1990s | 3 of 10 |
| 2000s | 2 of 10 |
| 2010s | 1 of 10 |
| 2020s | 0 of 10 |
The slide comes from the calendar, which has not skipped a leap day since 1900 and so lets every solstice creep earlier. The next skipped leap day is in 2100, so until then the creep carries on.
Born on 21 or 22 December: Sagittarius or Capricorn?
In US Eastern time, 21 December was a changeover day in 57 of the 80 years and a whole Sagittarius day in the other 23; it was never a whole Capricorn day. 22 December was wholly Capricorn in 57 years. From 23 December onwards every date is Capricorn in every zone and every year in the table. For a 21 December birthday, the year and the clock time decide it, and the zodiac sign calculator works it out from date, time and birthplace. A baby born in New York at noon on 21 December 2025 was a Capricorn by about two hours; one born at 9 am that day was a Sagittarius.

There is no blended Sagittarius-Capricorn type in the tradition. A Sun at 29° Sagittarius is a Sagittarian Sun about to change sign, and a Sun at 0° Capricorn has just changed. The Sagittarius page covers the 21 December cusp from the other side.
What month is Capricorn? A sign in two calendar years
Capricorn belongs to December and January, and it is the only sign split across two calendar years. About 34% of the Sun's time in Capricorn falls in December and 66% in January, so January is the better one-word answer. The December zodiac signs and January zodiac signs pages list every day of both months.
The New Year straddle has practical effects. Midnight on 1 January always falls in Capricorn, in every year and time zone. A Capricorn's birth year and their Capricorn season are two different labels: someone born on 5 January 2000 belongs to the season that opened in December 1999. The year table labels each season by its December.
The end of the sign is a separate question with its own cusp. In US Pacific time Capricorn ended on 19 January in 30 of the 80 years and in 7 of the ten from 2021. The Aquarius page, with the 20 January cusp, has the full count for that boundary.
The Tropic of Capricorn, where the Sun stands overhead at the December solstice, was named when the solstice Sun sat among the stars of Capricornus. Precession has moved them: in 2026 the solstice Sun is in the constellation Sagittarius, which it entered on 18 December. The tropical sign stays fixed to the season; sidereal astrology follows the stars and is a different system.
The Pluto in Capricorn generation, 2008 to 2024
Pluto first entered Capricorn on 26 January 2008, stepped back into Sagittarius for the summer, returned on 27 November 2008 and stayed until 2023. It then left and re-entered twice more before going for good on 19 November 2024. Everyone born from late 2008 to early 2023 has Pluto in Capricorn, whatever their Sun sign, along with those born in the two short re-entry windows of 2023 and 2024. The oldest of that cohort are now in their late teens.
For Capricorn Suns the more personal fact is that the passage is finished. Pluto moved through every degree of Capricorn between 2008 and 2024, often crossing a degree three times because of its retrograde loops, so every Capricorn alive in that period had Pluto pass over their Sun at some point. The table gives roughly when, by birthday:
| Born around | Sun degree in Capricorn | Pluto crossed it |
|---|---|---|
| 22 December to 26 December | 0° to 5° | 2008 to 2011 |
| 26 December to 31 December | 5° to 10° | 2010 to 2013 |
| 31 December to 5 January | 10° to 15° | 2013 to 2016 |
| 5 January to 10 January | 15° to 20° | 2015 to 2018 |
| 10 January to 15 January | 20° to 25° | 2018 to 2021 |
| 15 January to 20 January | 25° to 30° | 2021 to 2024 |
The slow planets also bunched up in Capricorn twice within living memory:

Saturn entered Capricorn on 12 November 1988 and Uranus on 2 December 1988, joining Neptune, which had been there since 1984. Saturn stayed until 6 February 1991. So the three Capricorn seasons from December 1988 to January 1991 had the Sun, Saturn, Uranus and Neptune in one sign, a four-planet cluster for every birth in those weeks. The second bunch came three decades later: Saturn from 20 December 2017, Jupiter from 2 December 2019, and Pluto throughout, with Saturn and Pluto meeting in mid-January 2020. A Capricorn born around New Year 2020 has the Sun with three slow planets. The stellium guide explains how a cluster like that is read by house, which needs a full birth chart with a birth time.
Capricorn in the tradition: Saturn's house, Mars exalted
Capricorn is Saturn's sign. In Ptolemy's scheme of houses (I.17), Saturn, the slowest and most distant planet, takes the two signs opposite the luminaries' houses, and Capricorn faces Cancer, the Moon's house, across the zodiac. By the traditional rule that puts the Moon in its detriment in Capricorn. Cancer is also Jupiter's exaltation, so Capricorn is Jupiter's fall, which Ptolemy (I.19) calls his "depression": Jupiter "reaches farthest north in Cancer" and so is weakest at the opposite point.
Mars is the planet that does well here. Ptolemy's reason is physical rather than moral: Mars "by nature is fiery and becomes all the more so in Capricorn because in it he is farthest south" (I.19). The later tradition puts the exact degree at 28° Capricorn, which the Sun reaches around 18 January. So Capricorn holds a strange pair: the greater malefic at home, the lesser malefic exalted, and the Moon and Jupiter both at a disadvantage.
Ptolemy (I.18) also places Capricorn in the earth triangle with Taurus and Virgo, governed by Venus by day and the Moon by night, and notes that the triangle takes on some of Saturn's character because "the house of Saturn, Capricornus, is included within it". Unlike Aquarius, Capricorn has no modern ruler; Saturn has held it without competition.
What Capricorn looks like on an ordinary Tuesday
Cardinal signs start things and Saturn sets the terms. Put together, that tends to mean the person who writes the plan before anyone else has agreed there should be one, then sticks to it. At work it is the colleague who keeps the shared spreadsheet up to date and quietly knows which deadlines are fictional. The flaw is the same habit pointed inward: rest becomes something to be earned, and the holiday gets booked only after the project closes.
With the Moon in detriment, feeling tends to be handled through doing. In a marriage this can look like a partner who shows care by fixing the boiler, sorting the pension paperwork and remembering the car's service date, and who finds it harder to say the thing out loud. Partners can read that as coolness when it is a lot of feeling spent in the one currency that feels safe.
What the sign does not mean: it does not make anyone mercenary or humourless, and Capricorns are not born old. The Sun sign is one factor of many. A Capricorn Sun with a Sagittarius Moon and Leo rising is loud company at a party and late for the dinner reservation. Your rising sign and Moon sign often say more about manner than the Sun alone, and a chart cannot tell you how much someone earns or whether they will be promoted.

The three decans of Capricorn
Each 10° slice has a sub-ruler. Dates are typical UTC ones and slide by a day.
| Decan | Degrees | Usual dates (UTC) | Chaldean face ruler | Triplicity sign (modern scheme) |
|---|---|---|---|---|
| First | 0° to 10° | 22 December to 30 December | Jupiter | Capricorn |
| Second | 10° to 20° | 31 December to 9 January | Mars | Taurus |
| Third | 20° to 30° | 10 January to 19 January | the Sun | Virgo |
The faces, the older system, run Jupiter, Mars and the Sun through Capricorn. The first decan, from about 22 to 30 December, is ruled by Jupiter, which sits awkwardly with Jupiter's fall in the same sign; the faces were assigned by a fixed planetary order, not by dignity, so clashes like that occur. The modern system gives the decans to the three earth signs instead: Capricorn, Taurus and Virgo, and through them Saturn, Venus and Mercury.
Capricorn in 2027
The year opens with a New Moon in Capricorn on 7 January at 17°18′, on the Sun degree of people born around 7 or 8 January. A penumbral lunar eclipse follows on 18 July at 15:45 UTC, with the Full Moon at 25°49′ Capricorn, close to the Sun degree of the 15 to 17 January birthdays. Late in the year Venus and Mars both enter Capricorn on 25 November, hours apart, and the Sun arrives on 22 December 2027 at 02:42 UTC, which is 6:42 pm Pacific on 21 December. The Capricorn 2027 horoscope runs through the year by date, and the weekly Capricorn horoscope covers the current sky.

Capricorn and the other signs
The useful classical pairing is with Cancer, the opposite sign and the source of both of Capricorn's debilities: the Moon rules Cancer and Jupiter is exalted there. Cancer and Capricorn is the house and the office, one partner tending the inside of a life and the other its structure. The Cancer page covers the June solstice that Capricorn mirrors. Taurus and Virgo share Capricorn's triangle, a trine apart. Aquarius shares Saturn but sits next door, and adjacent signs make no classical aspect, so Capricorn and Aquarius is less alike than the shared ruler suggests. A real comparison needs synastry, using both full charts. The zodiac signs by date page has all twelve signs on the same data.
