January zodiac signs: Capricorn, then Aquarius
January has two zodiac signs, Capricorn and Aquarius. In US time every date from 1 to 18 January is Capricorn and every date from 21 January is Aquarius. The Sun moves into Aquarius on 19 or 20 January, so those two birthdays need the year and the hour. In the UK the change is nearly always on the 20th.

What zodiac sign is January? All 31 dates
Read the row for your birthday. The sign column uses US Eastern time and covers the 80 years from 1951 to 2030; two rows say "Capricorn or Aquarius" because on those dates the answer has depended on the year. The decan column names the 10° third of the sign the Sun was in and its face ruler in the Chaldean order, a finer layer that never changes the sign itself.

| 20 January | Capricorn or Aquarius | 3rd Capricorn / 1st Aquarius | the change came during the day in 59 years; Aquarius from midnight in 21 |
| 21 January | Aquarius | 1st (Venus) | the first date that is Aquarius in every US year |

| 30 January | Aquarius | 1st or 2nd | |
| 31 January | Aquarius | 2nd (Mercury) |
Eighteen January dates are Capricorn without exception and eleven are Aquarius without exception. The Capricorn part of the month holds two decans: the second, whose face ruler is Mars, runs from about 1 January to 9 or 10 January, and the third, ruled by the Sun, begins when the Sun reaches 20° Capricorn on 9 to 11 January (UTC). Aquarius opens with the Venus decan and passes to Mercury's on 29 or 30 January, so a 31 January birthday is already second-decan Aquarius.
Outside the US the edges move with the clock. London is five hours ahead of New York, and in 4 early years (all leap years of the 1950s and 1960s) Aquarius did not begin in the UK until the small hours of 21 January. Sydney, sixteen hours ahead of New York in January, has never had an Aquarius 19 January at all; there the usual change day is the 20th (47 years) or the 21st (33).
Is 19 January Capricorn or Aquarius?
Capricorn, for most of the day and in most years. In US Eastern time the Sun entered Aquarius during 19 January in 21 of the 80 years from 1951 to 2030, and in the other 59 the whole date belonged to Capricorn. Those totals hide a change of pace. In the 2010s and the 2020s the split has been exactly even, 5 years in each decade, which is why 19 January now behaves like a coin toss for an American birthday.
| Decade | Aquarius began 19 January | Aquarius began 20 January |
|---|---|---|
| 1950s | 0 of 9 | 9 of 9 |
| 1960s | 0 of 10 | 10 of 10 |
| 1970s | 2 of 10 | 8 of 10 |
| 1980s | 3 of 10 | 7 of 10 |
| 1990s | 2 of 10 | 8 of 10 |
| 2000s | 3 of 10 | 7 of 10 |
| 2010s | 5 of 10 | 5 of 10 |
| 2020s | 5 of 10 | 5 of 10 |
Before 1973 it never happened. Aquarius began on 20 January in all 10 years of the 1960s and in 9 of the 9 counted years of the 1950s. The first 19 January start in the series came in 1973, at 11:48 pm, a few minutes before midnight. From then on the 19th turned up once every four years, always in the year after a leap year: 1977, 1981 and so on through 2009. In 2010 a second slot opened, the year two after a leap year, and since then the pattern has been two years on the 19th followed by two on the 20th.
The reason for that order is the leap day. The Sun's arrival at 300° of longitude, the start of Aquarius, lands roughly six hours later on the clock each year. A January ingress happens before 29 February, so the extra day in a leap year only pulls the time back for the following January. That makes the leap year itself the latest start of each four-year run and the year after it the earliest. In 2024 Aquarius began at 9:07 am on 20 January; in 2025 it began at 3:00 pm on the 19th. The whole slow slide towards the 19th comes from the calendar, and the February zodiac signs page explains that drift in full.
The hour matters as much as the year. Aquarius has never begun on the morning of 19 January in New York time: the earliest start in all 80 years was 19 January, 2:01 pm, in 2029. Every 19 January Aquarius start on the record fell in the afternoon or evening. So a baby born on 19 January before about two in the afternoon, Eastern time, was a Capricorn in every year from 1951 to 2030, and a baby born at 9 pm on 19 January 2026 was an Aquarius, because the change came at 8:45 pm that evening.
Move west and the odds shorten. The same instant is three hours earlier on the clock in California, so Aquarius began during 19 January in 30 years in Pacific time against 7 in the UK. The British count is small and recent: every one of those 7 years falls between 2005 and 2029. For an exact verdict, put the date, time and place into the zodiac sign calculator, which uses the same ingress data as this page.
Is 20 January Capricorn or Aquarius?
It is the usual handover day, which makes it the date where the birth time decides most often. In US Eastern time 20 January began as Capricorn and turned Aquarius partway through in 59 of 80 years. In the other 21, the 19 January years, it was Aquarius from midnight. It has never been Capricorn all day in any US zone.
| January date, time zone | Capricorn all day | Aquarius began during the day | Aquarius all day |
|---|---|---|---|
| 19 January, US Eastern | 59 years | 21 years | 0 years |
| 19 January, US Central | 57 years | 23 years | 0 years |
| 19 January, US Pacific | 50 years | 30 years | 0 years |

| 21 January, UK | 0 years | 4 years | 76 years |
| 21 January, Sydney | 0 years | 32 years | 48 years |
Two rows in that table deserve a second look. The UK column shows 4 years in which 20 January was Capricorn from start to finish; those were 1952, 1956, 1960 and 1964, when the change came after midnight London time. And Sydney, where 20 January was Capricorn all day in 33 years, is the zone where a 21 January birthday most often starts as Capricorn: it did so in 32 years, against 4 in the UK and none in the US.
2027 shows how much the clock matters. The Sun enters Aquarius at 20 January, 07:30 UTC. That is 2:30 am on 20 January in New York and 1:30 am in Chicago, but 19 January, 11:30 pm in Los Angeles. A child born at 11:45 pm on 19 January 2027 in Los Angeles is an Aquarius; a child born at 1:00 am on 20 January 2027 in Chicago, which is 11:00 pm on the 19th in Los Angeles, is still a Capricorn by half an hour.

Find your year, then compare your birth time with the time in your zone. If you were born at or after it, the Sun was in Aquarius; before it, in Capricorn. Three zones are shown here because they bracket the usual disagreement: New York, Los Angeles and London.

Capricorn and Aquarius: one ruler for the whole month
January is the only month of the year whose two signs share a traditional ruler. In the scheme of domiciles set out in Ptolemy's Tetrabiblos (I.17), Saturn holds both Capricorn and Aquarius, the pair of signs that face the Moon's Cancer and the Sun's Leo across the circle. So the handover on 19 or 20 January changes the element, from earth to air, and the quality, from cardinal to fixed, while the ruling planet stays the same. Uranus, found in 1781, is the modern ruler many astrologers give Aquarius; this page follows the older rule and treats Uranus as an addition.
| Capricorn in January | Aquarius in January | |
|---|---|---|
| Element and quality | earth, cardinal (Ptolemy's "tropical" class) | air, fixed (Ptolemy's "solid" class) |
| Traditional ruler | Saturn | Saturn (modern: Uranus) |
| Exalted here | Mars | no planet |
| January decans and face rulers | 2nd (Mars), 3rd (Sun) | 1st (Venus), 2nd (Mercury) from about 30 January |
| Days the Sun spends in the sign | 29.44 on average | 29.59 on average |
| Share of US births 2000 to 2014 | 7.63%, 12th of 12 | 7.93%, 11th of 12 |
Ptolemy (I.11) counts Capricorn as one of the two tropical signs, "the first from the winter solstice", because the Sun turns back north there. He also gives it a second distinction (I.19): Mars "naturally received Capricorn as his exaltation". A January Capricorn therefore sits in a sign where Saturn is at home and Mars is honoured, and the early-January decan adds Mars again as face ruler.
Capricorn in January: the Mars and Sun decans
The December Capricorn sits in Jupiter's decan; the January one is later in the sign, past the solstice, in the faces of Mars and then the Sun. Read plainly, the January part of the sign is the working end of it: Saturn's patience with Mars's push behind it, and in the Sun decan a wish to be seen doing the job well.
In ordinary life that can look like the person who files the tax return in the first week of January because a deadline left open bothers them. Or the site manager who arrives before the crew, stays after them, and mentions neither. Or the friend who turns down three invitations in a row during a promotion year and then reappears, on time, at every birthday once it is done. These are illustrations of a temperament, not forecasts, and a Sun sign alone cannot say whether any one person fits them.
What Capricorn does not mean: it says nothing about coldness, money or ambition at the expense of other people, which are the stock readings of the sign. Saturn's sign describes how a person handles time and structure. A Capricorn with a Pisces Moon may run that structure for the benefit of everyone else in the room. The full sign, with its December dates and the Pluto years, is on the Capricorn dates page.
Aquarius in January: the Venus decan
Every January Aquarius from 19 or 20 January to about 29 January is a first-decan Aquarius, the face the Chaldean order gives to Venus. Born on 31 January, and in some years on the 29th or 30th, and you have crossed into Mercury's decan. The Venus face is often read as the most sociable stretch of a sign whose ruler is Saturn: the rules still matter, but they are rules for living alongside other people.
In practice that looks like the neighbour who starts the street's group chat and then writes its etiquette, or the colleague who will defend a junior's right to speak in a meeting and leave before the drinks. It can be the parent who knows every family at the school gate by first name and tells none of them anything personal. Again, these are pictures of a style, and a single placement cannot confirm them.
Aquarius carries no promise of eccentricity or genius, and nothing in the tradition says late-January Aquarians are distant. The Sun is in its detriment there, opposite its own sign of Leo, which is usually read as a self that is more comfortable inside a group than in the spotlight. Aquarius dates, decans and generations covers the February half of the sign.
How common are January birthdays?
Less common than any other month's. In the US Social Security daily birth file behind our rarity study, for 2000 to 2014, January averaged 10,909 births per date, −3.9% against the all-year average of 11,350, which puts it 12th of the 12 months. New Year's Day is close to the quietest date of the whole calendar, 365th of 366 with 7,735 births (−31.9%), and 2 January is 362nd. Fewer scheduled inductions and caesareans over public holidays is the usual explanation offered for dips like these, though this data cannot show the cause.
| January date | US births, average 2000–2014 | Against the average day | Rank of 366 dates |

| 30 January | 11,029 | −2.8% | 282 |
| 31 January | 11,266 | −0.7% | 204 |
The rest of January runs only slightly below average. The busiest January date, 24 January, ranks 151st at +0.8%. The always-Capricorn dates average 10,832 births and the always-Aquarius dates 11,053.
Both January signs sit at the bottom of the sign table too. In the Shymea rarity study, which assigns 62.2 million US births from 2000 to 2014 to the exact ingress instant, Capricorn was the rarest sign at 7.63% and Aquarius the second rarest at 7.93%. England and Wales put Capricorn last as well in 2025 (7.58%). Part of the reason is orbital: Earth is nearest the Sun in early January and moves fastest then, so the Sun crosses Capricorn in 29.44 days, the shortest stay of any sign.
January Capricorns and the slow planets
Some January birth years carry an outer planet in Capricorn as well as the Sun. Neptune entered Capricorn on 21 November 1984 (after a first pass that began on 19 January 1984) and stayed until 29 January 1998. Uranus joined it on 2 December 1988 and left for Aquarius on 12 January 1996. So a Capricorn born in any January from 1989 to 1995, or on 1 to 11 January 1996, has the Sun, Uranus and Neptune in the same sign. In January 1989, 1990 and 1991 Saturn was there as well (it re-entered Capricorn on 12 November 1988 and left on 6 February 1991), four bodies in one sign, a cluster the birth chart will place in a house once you add the time.
Pluto gives the most recent run. It entered Capricorn for good on 27 November 2008, so every January Capricorn from 2009 to 2024 has it, and January 2024 ended the series with a near tie: the Sun reached Aquarius on 20 January 2024 and Pluto followed on 21 January 2024. A baby born in the US on 20 January 2024 after 9:07 am Eastern has an Aquarius Sun with Pluto in the last degree of Capricorn; by 22 January both were in Aquarius. Planet dates are DE442 ingresses in UTC.
Which constellation is the Sun in during January?
Sagittarius, for most of the month. The signs are measured from the March equinox, and the constellations have slid against them by most of a sign's width since antiquity. On the International Astronomical Union's boundaries the Sun stayed among the stars of Sagittarius until 20 January, 02:18 UTC in 2026, only then crossing into Capricornus. Every January Capricorn birthday that year had the Sun in front of the Archer's stars.
| Constellation behind the Sun, 2026 | Sun enters (UTC) | Sun leaves (UTC) |

Born in January: questions people ask
- What zodiac sign is January 19?
- Capricorn in most years. In US Eastern time Aquarius began during 19 January in 21 of the 80 years from 1951 to 2030, always in the afternoon or evening, and never before 19 January, 2:01 pm. In the 2020s it happens in 5 years of 10, so a 19 January birthday needs the birth year and time.
- Is January 20 Aquarius or Capricorn?
- Both, depending on the hour. In US Eastern time the Sun entered Aquarius during 20 January in 59 of 80 years, so a morning birth is often Capricorn and an evening birth Aquarius; in the other 21 years the whole day was Aquarius. In 2027 the change is at 2:30 am Eastern.
- What birth month is Aquarius?
- Aquarius begins in January and ends in February: from 19 or 20 January to 18 or 19 February. The last twelve days or so of January are Aquarius, and the larger share of the sign falls in February.
- What zodiac sign is January 1?
- Capricorn, in every year and every time zone. New Year's Day sits on the line between the first and second decans of Capricorn (the Jupiter and Mars faces), and it is one of the quietest birthdays in the US, 365th of 366 dates.
- What are the Aquarius dates in western astrology?
- In tropical Western astrology Aquarius runs from 20 January to 18 February in most years. In US time the start now falls on 19 January in 6 of the 10 years 2021 to 2030, and Pisces takes over on 18 February.
- Is Capricorn the rarest zodiac sign?
- Yes, in the registry data. Capricorn was 7.63% of US births from 2000 to 2014, last of the twelve signs, and last in England and Wales in 2025 at 7.58%. The Sun spends only 29.44 days in it, and January is the quietest month for US births.
