Scorpio dates23 October to 22 November, near enough every year

Scorpio starts when the Sun reaches 210° of ecliptic longitude, thirty degrees past the September equinox, and the date it lands on barely moves. In US Eastern time the Sun entered Scorpio on 23 October in 65 of the 80 years 1951 to 2030, on 22 October in 12 and on 24 October in 3. The three 24 October starts were all in the 1950s (1951, 1955 and 1959). Only Aries, among the twelve, begins on its usual date more reliably.

The 22nd is gaining. It never began Scorpio on the US East Coast before the 1990s, and it did so in 4 of the ten years from 2021 to 2030. The end of the sign is looser: Sagittarius took over on 22 November in 60 of the 80 years and on 21 November in 20, and for 2021 to 2030 the two dates split 5 years each. 23 October is a change-over day in most years: in US Eastern time the Sun moved into Scorpio during that date in 65 of the 80 years, so whether a 23 October birth is Scorpio depends on the clock, which is exactly what the sign calculator checks. In November the handover belongs to the 22nd (60 years) far more than the 21st (20), though Pacific time moves more of it onto the 21st (31 years). Mars opens the sign in both systems. The Chaldean faces run Mars, Sun, Venus through Scorpio, and the modern triplicity scheme runs Scorpio, Pisces, Cancer, which reads as Mars (or Pluto), Jupiter (or Neptune) and the Moon. The Sun enters Scorpio on 23 October 2027 at 15:33 UTC (11:33 am Eastern) and leaves for Sagittarius on 22 November at 13:16 UTC. Mars, the traditional ruler, is home first: it enters Scorpio on 2 September (UTC) and moves on into Sagittarius on 15 October, a week before Scorpio season starts.

Mercury turns retrograde on 7 October at 4°56′ Scorpio, the Sun degree of people born around 27 or 28 October, backs into Libra and re-enters Scorpio on 10 November. Venus arrives on 8 October for a stay in the sign of her detriment. The New Moon in Scorpio is on 29 October at 5°54′.

There are two Full Moons in Scorpio in 2027, both with the Sun in Taurus opposite: one on 20 April at 0°37′, at the very start of the sign, and one on 20 May at 29°14′, at the very end. Pluto's stay in its modern sign was short by Pluto's standards. It first entered Scorpio on 5 November 1983, slipped back, and returned on 28 August 1984 until 17 January 1995. Pluto's orbit is lopsided and it passed its closest point to the Sun in 1989, mid-way through, when it moves fastest. Everyone born from 1984 to 1994 has Pluto in Scorpio, and the Scorpios among them have it with their Sun.

Scorpios born in 1984 add Saturn, which was in the sign from 24 August 1983 to 17 November 1985, so their Sun, Saturn and Pluto sit in one sign. Almost exactly as common as its length predicts. In the Shymea rarity study 5,095,914 of the 62,187,026 US births from 2000 to 2014, 8.19%, were Scorpios, putting the sign seventh of twelve. The Sun's 29.90 days in Scorpio would on their own give 8.19%, and the 2014 share was 8.26%, a ratio of 1.009: the birth calendar neither helps nor hurts it much.

About 72% of Scorpio falls in November and 28% in October, so it is mostly a November sign. The registers abroad tell the same middle-of-the-table story: 8.17% in England and Wales in 2025 (ninth), 8.23% in Canada in 2024 (seventh), 8.33% in Australia in 2023 (seventh) and 8.32% in New York City in 2024 (sixth).

Taurus, opposite, is a reversal of dignities: the Moon exalted there and fallen here, Venus at home there and in detriment here, which is why Taurus and Scorpio is the sign pairing most often described as magnetic and stubborn in equal measure. Cancer and Pisces share the water triangle that Ptolemy hands partly to Mars, a trine away; Cancer and Scorpio and Scorpio and Pisces are the easy aspects. The neighbours, Libra and Sagittarius, are 30° away and in aversion by the old rule.
