October zodiac sign: Libra, then Scorpio
October has two zodiac signs. Every date from 1 to 21 October is Libra and every date from 25 to 31 October is Scorpio, in US and UK time, in all 80 years from 1951 to 2030. Scorpio usually begins on 23 October (65 of those years in New York), sometimes on 22 October, and rarely on 24 October.

What zodiac sign is October? The 31 dates
Read the sign column for US Eastern time across the 80 years from 1951 to 2030. Twenty-one dates at the start of the month never change, seven at the end never change, and three in between can go either way depending on the year and the hour. The decan column splits each sign into 10° thirds and gives the planet the old Chaldean order assigns to each third.

October is mostly a Libra month. Libra holds the first 21 or 22 days and Scorpio the last 9 or 10, so a random October birthday is Libra a little more than two times in three. Inside Libra, the month crosses two decan lines: the Saturn third begins on 2 or 3 October (UTC) and the Jupiter third on 12 or 13 October. Every October Scorpio is a first-decan Scorpio, the third given to Mars.
Australian readers should shift everything later. Sydney is usually eleven hours ahead of UTC in late October, so the change there never happens on 22 October: the last date that is Libra all day in Sydney is 22 October, and 24 October was the first day of Scorpio in 38 of the 80 years.
Why 23 October is the steadiest sign change of the year
In US Eastern time Scorpio began on 23 October in 65 of the 80 years from 1951 to 2030, on 22 October in 12 and on 24 October in 3. Of the twelve sign changes in the calendar, only the start of Aries at the March equinox lands on one date more often in New York. In British time the figure is 69 of 80, which ties 23 October with 20 January, the start of Aquarius, as the most settled sign change a UK birth certificate can have.
Stability here is a matter of where the moment falls on the clock. Each year the Sun reaches 0° Scorpio about six hours later than the year before, then jumps back almost a day after each leap day, so over a century the instant wanders through a window a little wider than a day. For Scorpio that window runs from 22 October, 21:13 UTC in 2028 to 24 October, 05:36 UTC in 1951. Most of it falls inside 23 October in UTC, and New York in late October is usually four hours behind UTC, London one. Both cities therefore see the change happen in daylight or the evening of the 23rd far more often than near either midnight.
The record by decade shows how settled it was, and where it is starting to give.
| Decade | Scorpio began 22 October | Scorpio began 23 October | Scorpio began 24 October |
|---|---|---|---|
| 1950s | 0 of 9 | 6 of 9 | 3 of 9 |
| 1960s | 0 of 10 | 10 of 10 | 0 of 10 |
| 1970s | 0 of 10 | 10 of 10 | 0 of 10 |
| 1980s | 0 of 10 | 10 of 10 | 0 of 10 |
| 1990s | 2 of 10 | 8 of 10 | 0 of 10 |
| 2000s | 3 of 10 | 7 of 10 | 0 of 10 |
| 2010s | 2 of 10 | 8 of 10 | 0 of 10 |
| 2020s | 5 of 10 | 5 of 10 | 0 of 10 |
For thirty consecutive years, 1960 to 1989, Scorpio began on 23 October in New York every single time. A Libra born on 22 October in that period was a Libra all day, whatever the hour. The first exceptions came in 1992 and 1996, leap years both, when the change slipped to just before midnight on the 22nd (22 October, 11:57 pm and 22 October, 11:19 pm). In the 2020s the split is 5 years on 22 October against 5 on the 23rd.
The reason is the slow calendar drift that affects every sign boundary this century, explained in full on the May zodiac signs page. In short, 2000 was kept as a leap year, so nothing has pulled the dates back since 1900, and the leap-year rhythm keeps nudging every ingress a few minutes earlier each cycle. October shows it late because its window started so far from midnight. The year 2028 brings the earliest change of the 80, at 22 October, 5:13 pm New York time.
A stable date is not a stable answer, though. Because the change so often happens partway through 23 October, that date is the one where a birth time matters most: Scorpio arrived during the day on 23 October in 65 of the 80 years. The date the printed tables give is right, and it is also the date on which a person can be either sign. In 2026 the moment comes at 23 October, 5:38 am in New York, 23 October, 10:38 am in London and 23 October, 8:38 pm in Sydney.
Born on 22, 23 or 24 October: Libra or Scorpio?
22 October is Libra unless Scorpio arrived that evening. In New York the change fell on 22 October in 12 of the 80 years, all of them since 1990, and in 4 of the 10 years from 2021 to 2030. Los Angeles, three hours further behind, sees it more often (20 years), and London almost never (2).
23 October is the usual first day of Scorpio, and the date with the most split verdicts. In US Eastern time it was Libra all day in only 3 years (all in the 1950s), Scorpio from midnight in 12, and changed during the day in the other 65. If your birthday is 23 October, the year and the clock time decide it.
24 October is Scorpio in the US in every year since 1960. The three New York exceptions, when Scorpio did not begin until the small hours of the 24th, were 1951, 1955 and 1959. In the UK the change came on 24 October in 9 years, and in Sydney it did so in 38, so for an Australian 24 October birthday the birth time still matters.

To settle a single birthday, the zodiac sign calculator takes the date, time and place and compares them with the exact ingress. A birth timed before the ingress belongs to Libra; at or after it, to Scorpio. There is no in-between sign, and 'cusp personality' is a modern idea, not part of the classical rules.
Scorpio start times by year, 1980 to 2030
The table gives the start of Scorpio in New York, Los Angeles and London. Leap years run earliest, and the three years after each leap year run about six hours later each time. 2025 shows how fine the margin can be: Scorpio began at 22 October, 11:51 pm in New York, minutes before midnight, so a baby born there at 11:55 pm on 22 October 2025 is a Scorpio.

Libra in October: Saturn's exaltation and the later decans
Libra is one of Ptolemy's two equinoctial signs. In Tetrabiblos I.11 he names "the one which begins with the autumnal equinox, Libra", and says these signs are so called because when the Sun is at their beginning "he makes the nights exactly equal to the days". That is why every Libra birthday sits in the weeks after the September equinox. The sign is Venus's, given to her with Taurus as signs that are "extremely fertile" (I.17), and Ptolemy places Saturn's exaltation there and the Sun's depression, "for the opposite reasons" to Aries (I.19): in Libra the days are shortening.
The October Libra is the later Libra. Birthdays from 1 to about 2 October still fall in the Moon's decan, from 3 October the Sun is in the Saturn decan, and from about 13 October in the Jupiter decan. Saturn exalted in the sign and Saturn ruling the middle third make early-to-mid October the most Saturnine stretch of Libra: fairness that comes with rules attached.
In ordinary life that can look like the person who drafts the house-share agreement and expects everyone to sign it; the manager who will not take sides in a dispute until she has heard both versions twice; the friend who spends a Saturday comparing three sofas and buys the one that suits the room, not the one they like best. It does not mean indecisive by default, and it does not mean a pushover. Libra's question is what is fair, which is not the same as what keeps everyone happy. A Mars in Aries or a Scorpio rising will change how loudly it gets asked.
Two slow planets mark Libra generations born in October. Pluto entered Libra on 5 October 1971 and stayed until 5 November 1983, apart from a brief return in 1984, so every October Libra born from that date in 1971 to 1983 has Pluto in their sign. Saturn, the planet exalted there, entered Libra on 29 October 2009 and left for Scorpio on 5 October 2012: every October Libra of 2010 and 2011 has Saturn in Libra too, as do those born in 2012 before Saturn moved on. The Libra dates and the September equinox page covers the September half of the sign.
Scorpio in October: Mars twice over
Scorpio is a 'solid' sign in Ptolemy's scheme, his word for what later astrologers call fixed. The solid signs follow the equinoxes and solstices, and he explains the name by the season's qualities, which by then "touch us more firmly" because we are "inured to them" (I.11). Scorpio is also one of Mars's two houses, "Scorpio and Aries" (I.17), and the sign where the Moon has her depression, being "the diametrically opposite sign" to her exaltation in Taurus (I.19). Modern astrologers add Pluto, discovered in 1930, as a co-ruler; the traditional rule is Mars.
An October Scorpio gets Mars twice: Mars rules the sign, and Mars is the face ruler of the first decan, which runs from the ingress until about 2 November. That makes the October end of Scorpio the bluntest part of it. The November Scorpio, in the Sun's and then Venus's decans, is usually described as warmer and more social.
In daily life the late-October Scorpio is the colleague who reads the contract all the way to the indemnity clause; the friend who remembers exactly what you said at a party four years ago and quietly holds you to it; the tenant who knows the landlord's obligations better than the landlord. It does not mean vindictive, secretive or obsessed with sex, which is where much pop astrology stops. It means attention that goes to the bottom of things and stays there. The Scorpio dates and traits page has the rest of the sign.
Pluto, the modern co-ruler, spent the years from 28 August 1984 to 10 November 1995 in Scorpio, with a short spell in Sagittarius in early 1995. So every Scorpio born in late October from 1984 to 1995 has Pluto in their own sign.
October birthdays by the numbers: how common Libra and Scorpio are
October is a busy month for births in the United States. Averaged over 2000 to 2014, the month sees 11,404 births a day, +0.5% against the year's average day and 5th of the twelve months. The Libra dates of October average 11,493 births a day; the always-Scorpio dates average 11,089.

The busiest October date is 3 October, 33rd of 366. The quietest is 31 October, Halloween, at −9.6% and 356th of the year. The second-quietest is 13 October (−4.7%). Neither date is a public holiday, so the dips are worth noticing; a likely factor is that some induced and caesarean births are scheduled around particular dates, though the data cannot show why.
Across the whole year, the Shymea rarity study assigned 62.2 million US births from 2000 to 2014 to the exact ingress instants. Libra came 5th of the twelve signs at 8.52% and Scorpio 7th at 8.19%. New York City's 2024 births put Libra 4th (8.57%). Neither October sign is rare; the Sun spends 30.39 days in Libra on average and 29.90 in Scorpio, a little short of a month, as it speeds up towards the January perihelion.
The stars behind October belong to Virgo
Tropical signs are measured from the equinox, constellations from the star field, and the two have drifted nearly a sign apart since antiquity. Using the IAU's constellation boundaries, the Sun spent the whole of Libra season in 2026 in front of the stars of Virgo, and crossed into the constellation Libra only on 31 October, 14:40 UTC. From the second week of Scorpio to its end, the stars behind the Sun are Libra's.
| Constellation behind the Sun, 2026 | Sun enters (UTC) | Sun leaves (UTC) |
|---|---|---|
| Virgo | 17 September, 02:16 UTC | 31 October, 14:40 UTC |
| Libra | 31 October, 14:40 UTC | 23 November, 17:27 UTC |
None of this moves an October birthday's sign in Western astrology, which is tropical by design. The November zodiac signs page takes up the constellation question properly, because that is the month when the Sun reaches Scorpius and then Ophiuchus.
October 2027: Mercury retrograde across the Libra and Scorpio line
The October 2027 sky is dominated by a Mercury retrograde that straddles the month's own boundary. Mercury stations at 4°56′ Scorpio on 7 October, 10:37 am New York time, backs into Libra on 16 October, 3:36 am, and turns direct at 19°19′ Libra on 28 October, 10:11 am. Anyone born in October 2027 between those dates has Mercury retrograde in the chart.
