Cancer and Scorpio in one paragraph

Cancer (21 June to 21 July in most years) is cardinal Water, ruled by the Moon. Scorpio (23 October to 21 November) is fixed Water, ruled by Mars in traditional astrology and by Pluto in modern practice. Your Suns sit 120 degrees apart, a trine, the angle astrologers associate with ease. Cardinal signs start things and fixed signs keep them going, so in this pair Cancer tends to begin the closeness and Scorpio tends to hold onto it. You feel understood early. The harder lesson is that being understood and being given room are not the same thing.

By degree, the two Suns are within 8 degrees of an exact trine in 46.5% of pairs and within 3 degrees in 19%. In about 4%, a very late Cancer with a very early Scorpio, the Suns are closer to a square than a trine.

The thing nobody mentions: you almost never share a Venus sign

Compatibility pages call these two emotional twins. That is true of the Suns. It is far less true of the planet that describes how each of you loves.

Venus is never more than about 47 degrees from the Sun, so each Sun sign has its own short list. Across sixty years of births (method and full table):

• ✦A Cancer's Venus is in Gemini 35% of the time, Leo 27%, Cancer 21%, Virgo 10% and Taurus 8%.
• ✦A Scorpio's Venus is in Scorpio 32%, Libra 24%, Sagittarius 24%, Virgo 10% and Capricorn 10%.

The only sign on both lists is Virgo, so a Cancer and a Scorpio share a Venus sign in just 1.0% of pairs. Both Venus signs land in Water in only 6.6%.

That changes the usual picture. The commonest Cancer Venus signs are Gemini and Leo, an Air sign and a Fire sign. Plenty of Cancers flirt with jokes, texts and a bit of theatre, and a Cancer with Venus in Leo (27% of them) has a love style that squares Scorpio's Sun by sign. Meanwhile a third of Scorpios love in Scorpio itself: slow to trust, all-or-nothing once they do.

Mercury tells a similar story. You never share a Mercury sign, because a Cancer's Mercury is in Gemini, Cancer or Leo and a Scorpio's in Libra, Scorpio or Sagittarius. But 39% of pairs share a Mercury element, more than most pairings manage, usually because the Cancer has Mercury in Cancer and the Scorpio has Mercury in Scorpio.

Then there is the Moon, which is what most people mean by "emotional". It moves through the whole zodiac every month, so Sun signs say nothing about it. Both of you have a Water Moon in only 6.2% of pairs, roughly one in sixteen, which is what chance gives any two people.

Home first: how this pair builds a nest

Both signs like to be home, and both treat home as a place to recover rather than to entertain. That is the easy part.

The difference is in what home is for. To Cancer it is shelter and feeding: a full fridge, family photos, the kitchen as the warmest room. To Scorpio it is a private fortress: few visitors, a door that locks, a room or a drawer nobody else opens.

Picture a Sunday. Cancer has invited its sister, her children and a neighbour for lunch, because feeding people is how Cancer loves. Scorpio is counting how many people will be in its house and how long they will stay. By three o'clock Scorpio has gone very quiet in the garden, and Cancer has read the quiet as disapproval of its family.

A simple house rule settles most of this: a weekly limit on guests, agreed in advance, and one space in the home that belongs to Scorpio alone.

Jealousy, secrets and the line between privacy and control

Both signs protect what they love, and both rulers are protective planets. The Moon protects by holding close: tucking in, checking you have eaten, keeping you near. Mars, Scorpio's older ruler, protects by watching: noticing who called, reading the room, catching a threat early. When both of you are protecting the relationship from the outside world, you feel safer together than either of you has felt before.

Trouble starts when the protection turns inward. Privacy means keeping your own inner rooms. Control means managing someone else's. Scorpio's version of the slide is checking: glancing at a phone, testing loyalty with a remark to see how Cancer reacts. Cancer's version is steering by mood: a sulk that cancels the plan without anyone having said no.

Two things help, and both need saying while you are calm:

• ✦Name what is private and what is shared. A diary, a therapist, an old friendship can be private. Money, big plans and contact with an ex usually should not be. Write the list down if you have to.
• ✦Say the fear instead of acting on it. "I felt shut out when you went out with them" is a sentence a Cancer or a Scorpio can hear. Checking the phone is an act neither of you forgives easily.

In bed

Trust comes first for both of you, and once it is there, sex in this pair tends to carry a lot of meaning. For Cancer it is reassurance: proof that it is still wanted and safe. For Scorpio it is closer to proof of loyalty, the one place where it can drop the guard completely.

Both signs remember everything, which cuts both ways. A tender night is remembered for years. So is a careless remark made in bed.

At work you see different halves of the same room. Cancer reads how people feel: who is struggling, who needs a word. Scorpio reads where the power sits: who actually decides, which meeting matters. Together you know a lot about any organisation you join. The shared weakness is a thin skin. Both of you take criticism at work personally and neither says so, so debrief a bad day out loud the same evening.

When Cancer sulks and Scorpio goes cold

When this pair falls out, it rarely gets loud. Cancer withdraws into its shell: shorter answers, a hurt silence, hints dropped three times instead of one clear request. Scorpio goes cold: the temperature in the room drops, a precise remark lands, and warmth is withdrawn until it is earned back.

The trap is that each style frightens the other. Cancer reads Scorpio's coldness as abandonment and clings harder. Scorpio reads Cancer's hints as manipulation and pulls further away.

Cancer, ask once, plainly. Scorpio, say "I'm angry about this" before you go cold, because a named anger is far easier for Cancer to bear than an unnamed chill. Put a time on the silence, an evening rather than a week, and make up in private, over food, with the door shut. You are both better at repair behind closed doors.

Long term

Water trines tend to deepen with time. Ten or twenty years in, Cancer and Scorpio couples often share a private language, a stack of survived storms and a loyalty that nobody outside fully sees.

The long-term risk is the closed world. Two private people can build a life so self-contained that friends drift away and nobody tells either of you the truth any more. Keep at least a few people close who are not family and not each other.
