Cancer dates21 June to 22 July, from the solstice on

Every sign is exactly 30° of the ecliptic, so in a perfectly circular orbit the Sun would spend the same time in each, a little over 30 days. Earth's orbit is slightly oval. It reaches aphelion, its farthest point from the Sun, in early July, and an orbiting body moves slowest when it is farthest out. From the ground that shows up as the Sun creeping through the summer signs and hurrying through the winter ones.

Aphelion falls while the Sun is in the first half of Cancer, so Cancer gets the slowest stretch of the whole year. Averaged over the 80 years from 1951 to 2030, the Sun spent 31.45 days in Cancer. Gemini, just before it, comes second at 31.33 days, and Leo, just after, third at 31.29. At the far end of the orbit, Capricorn gets only 29.44 days, a difference of about two days for the same 30°.

The figure barely moves from year to year. The shortest Cancer season in the period lasted 31.45 days and the longest 31.46, a spread of minutes. What changes is where those 31 days and some hours sit on the calendar, which is the subject of the next section.

Two things follow for anyone born in Cancer. First, a longer stay means more birthdays, and Cancer is one of the commonest signs in every registry Shymea has counted. In the United States it was 8.84% of 62.2 million births from 2000 to 2014, the third largest share. Second, and more surprising, the longest sign is not the most common. Leo and Virgo both beat it, with fewer days, because the American birth calendar peaks in August and September. The rarest zodiac signs study separates the two effects: in 2014 Cancer took 8.75% of US births against an ephemeris-only expectation of 8.61%, a ratio of 1.017. That is the birth season adding very little. Leo, the most common sign, has the highest ratio of the twelve.

A longer sign is not a stronger sign, and a Cancer born on 21 July is no more Cancerian than one born on 1 July. The extra day is spread across all 30°: each degree of Cancer takes the Sun a few minutes longer to cross than a degree of Capricorn does, nothing more.

The start of Cancer is not a date someone chose. It is the solstice itself: the instant the Sun's apparent longitude reaches 90°, its farthest point north of the equator. Astronomers and astrologers are measuring the same event, so the time an almanac gives for the June solstice is, to the minute, the time Cancer begins. In 2027 that is 21 June 2027 at 14:11 UTC, or 10:11 am Eastern.

Ptolemy names Cancer one of the two solstitial signs in the Tetrabiblos (I.11), "the first interval of 30° from the summer solstice", and explains the name from what happens there: the Sun turns at the beginning of the sign and reverses its northward progress. The other is Capricorn, at the December solstice. So the summer-solstice sign and the longest sign are the same sign, and the opposite one, Capricorn, is both the winter-solstice sign and the shortest.

Readers in Australia live this backwards. In Sydney the moment Cancer begins is the shortest day of the year, so a Cancer birthday there is a midwinter birthday. The sign stays the same; only the season is reversed.

Why 20 June keeps getting more common

Calendars print the solstice as 21 June, and for a birth in the eastern United States that was right in 64 of the 80 years from 1951 to 2030. But the share of years in which Cancer starts on 20 June has been climbing. The leap-year cycle makes the average calendar year about 11 minutes longer than the seasonal one, the year 2000 kept its leap day, and so the solstice has crept earlier in the calendar for more than a century.

Not one year of the 1950s, 1960s or 1970s had Cancer starting on 20 June in New York. From 2021 to 2030 it happens in 5 of the 10 years, and in 2028 the Sun enters Cancer at 4:02 pm on 20 June Eastern time. On the West Coast the shift arrived earlier: across the whole period 21 Pacific years began on the 20th. The opposite case, a 22 June start, belongs to the past: it happened in US Eastern time only 2 times, both in the 1950s.

Look up your birth year and compare your birth time with the start and end times in your time zone. Earlier than the Cancer time and you are a Gemini; later than the Leo time and you are a Leo. Notice the leap-year pattern: a June ingress comes after 29 February, so the starts drop back a day in each leap year (2016, 2020, 2024, 2028) and then drift later through the three ordinary years.

In US Eastern time every date from 23 June to 21 July was Cancer in all 80 years from 1951 to 2030. Pacific time has a single exception: in 2028 Leo began late on 21 July. The edges are where the year matters. Here is what each borderline day turned out to be, counted over those 80 years:

Read 21 June first. In US Eastern time the Sun changed sign during that day in 64 of the 80 years, so a 21 June baby is a Gemini if born before the solstice and a Cancer after it, and only the clock settles it. The day was wholly Cancer in just 14 years. In the UK the 21st was a changeover day 67 times, and in Sydney the 22nd was a changeover day 36 times, so an Australian table that starts Cancer on 22 June is right for 36 years in 80 and wrong for the rest.

The July end has moved the same way. Leo began on 22 July in US Eastern time in 56 of the 80 years and on 23 July in 24, but every one of the 10 years from 2021 to 2030 is a 22 July change (10 of 10). Born on 22 July in the US in a recent year, you are a Cancer only if born before the Leo time in the table. Born on 23 July, you are a Leo. The UK is closer to an even split, 39 years on the 22nd and 41 on the 23rd.

Mostly July. The sign starts in the last ten days of June, so about 30% of the Sun's time in Cancer falls in June and 70% in July. Asked for a single Cancer month, July is the honest answer, and 21 June the usual start date.

No. In the US registry data Cancer was the third most common sign: 5,499,464 of 62,187,026 births from 2000 to 2014. It ranks second in England and Wales (8.79%, 2025 registrations), second in Canada and second in Australia, so in four countries Cancer never falls below third.

Jupiter, the planet exalted in Cancer, spent a year in the sign from 9 June 2025 to 30 June 2026. Every Cancer born in 2025, and those born from 21 to 30 June 2026, has Jupiter in its exaltation in the same sign as the Sun, a placement that recurs about every twelve years.

In 2027 the solstice, and so the Cancer ingress, comes on 21 June 2027 at 14:11 UTC. Mercury enters Cancer first, on 28 May, and turns retrograde on 10 June at 6°22′ Cancer, slipping back into Gemini before it returns to Cancer on 12 July. Venus arrives on 3 July (UTC; on 2 July at 10:02 pm EDT), and the Cancer New Moon falls on 4 July at 11°57′, which is 3 July at 11:02 pm EDT. The Sun leaves for Leo at 01:05 UTC on 23 July. Cancers born with a slow planet in their sign

Uranus spent 1949 to 1955 in Cancer, so every Cancer of the early 1950s carries it. Saturn's last pass, from 4 June 2003 to 16 July 2005, gave Cancers born from 2003 to mid-July 2005 the Sun with Saturn in its detriment, as did the run of 1974 and 1975. Saturn is not back in Cancer until 14 July 2032.

A decan is a third of the sign, 10° each. These are the usual UTC dates; like the sign, they can move by a day.

The faces of Cancer are Venus, Mercury and the Moon, so the last ten days of the sign, roughly 12 to 21 July, are the Moon's own face within the Moon's own house. The modern triplicity scheme gives Cancer, Scorpio and Pisces instead, and through them the Moon, Mars (or Pluto) and Jupiter (or Neptune). Sites that list the Cancer decans as Moon, Pluto and Neptune are using the modern version without naming it.

The axis Cancer makes with Capricorn is unusually tidy. The planet exalted in one falls in the other: Jupiter is exalted in Cancer and depressed in Capricorn, Mars the reverse, and the Moon's house faces Saturn's.
