What Black Moon Lilith actually is

Lilith is a direction, not a thing. Point at the far end of the Moon's orbit and you are pointing at her.Johannes Hevelius, Selenographia, 1647

Try this today

  • Run the calculator with just your birth date first. Then add the time and watch the house appear.
  • Look up a parent or sibling. People born 9 years apart often land in neighbouring Lilith signs.

Picture the Moon's path around Earth. It is not a circle but a slightly stretched loop, an ellipse. Earth sits off-centre, at one focus, so once a month the Moon swings to its closest point (perigee) and then to its farthest (apogee).

Black Moon Lilith is that apogee, the far end of the loop, projected onto the zodiac. Some astrologers describe it as the ellipse's second, empty focus. From Earth both lie in the same direction, so the sign comes out the same.

The loop itself slowly turns. The Sun's pull drags the long axis of the Moon's orbit forward by about 40.69° a year, so the apogee laps the zodiac every 8.85 years. That is why mean Lilith spends close to 8.8 months in every sign, and why everyone born in the same school year or so shares a Lilith sign.

There is nothing to look at up there. No rock, no light, no shadow. Black Moon Lilith is geometry, which is part of its charm: an empty point the tradition reads as the part of you that does not perform.

The sky behind it

Mean apogee = the Moon's mean longitude minus its mean anomaly, plus 180° (Meeus, Astronomical Algorithms, ch. 47, ELP-2000/82 mean elements), with the small correction Swiss Ephemeris applies (never more than about 0.12°). The orbit's mean eccentricity over 1940 to 2040 in our DE442 run: 0.0555.

Mean vs true

Mean Lilith vs true Lilith, and why your apps disagree

  • If your mean and true Lilith land in different signs, read both sign pages. Notice which one makes you wince in recognition.
  • Check your app's settings for the words mean, true, osculating or interpolated.

There are two common ways to calculate the apogee, and they answer slightly different questions.

Mean Lilith uses the Moon's average orbit. It glides forward at a steady pace and never turns retrograde. It is the version many astrology apps show by default.

True Lilith, also called osculating Lilith, takes the Moon's exact position and speed at one instant and asks where the far end of that ellipse is. Because the Sun keeps tugging the Moon off a clean ellipse, the answer swings back and forth, sometimes by a lot. In our daily run from 1940 to 2040, the gap between the two had a median of 9.2°, was over 15° on 30.8% of days, and peaked at 30.1°. True Lilith was moving backward on 56% of days.

The Swiss Ephemeris documentation is blunt about it: the osculating apogee oscillates about ±30° around the mean, while the Moon's actual apogee passages never stray more than about 5° from it. Much of that swing comes from treating a three-body problem as two. It suggests a third option, the interpolated or "natural" apogee, which some apps offer.

So which is "right"? Mean Lilith is the steadier, more widely used reference, and it is where we would start. True Lilith is a legitimate calculation that many astrologers also read. The calculator shows both, so you never have to guess which one an app picked.

The sky behind it

Example of a wide split: on Jan 1, 2030, mean Lilith was at 14°10′ Taurus and true Lilith at 8°56′ Gemini, 24.8° apart. Our true Lilith matches Swiss Ephemeris's osculating apogee to within 0.02° at eight test dates; the browser version (astronomy-engine) stays within 0.2° of JPL DE442.

Where the name comes from

From a night spirit to Adam's first wife to a point in your chart

The astrology point is about a century old. The name it borrowed is far older.Photo: Silvia F / ISO Republic

The name is old and the astrology is young, so it helps to keep them apart.

The word. In Akkadian, lilû and lilītu named a class of demonic spirits. The Hebrew lilit appears once in the Bible, in Isaiah 34:14, among the wild creatures of a ruined land; the King James Version translated it "screech owl," and scholars still debate whether a demon or a night bird is meant. The Dead Sea Scrolls' Songs of the Sage list Lilith among harmful spirits (Wikipedia).

The story. The tale most people know, Lilith as Adam's first wife, made from the same earth, who refused to lie beneath him and left Eden, comes from the Alphabet of Ben Sira, a medieval text usually dated between the 8th and 10th centuries (Wikipedia). It is satire as much as scripture, and mainstream rabbinic tradition never treated it as canon. Modern feminist writers later reclaimed Lilith as a figure of refusal and equality.

The astrology. In 1918 the astrologer Walter Gorn Old, who wrote as Sepharial, named a supposed second moon of Earth "Lilith." That moon was never confirmed. Astrologers now generally give the name to the Moon's apogee instead (Wikipedia)). So Black Moon Lilith is a 20th-century reading layered onto an ancient name, and it is fine to enjoy it as exactly that.

How to read your Lilith sign and house

Your Lilith sign is the style of the part you hide. Your Lilith house is the room you hide it in.Photo: Rahul Pandit / Burst

Try this today

  • Write one sentence starting "I was told I was too…". Compare it with your Lilith sign page.
  • Find your Lilith house, then name one situation in that area of life where you tend to go quiet.
  • Check the planets within about 5° of your Lilith in your full birth chart.

Astrologers who work with Lilith tend to read it as the part of you that refuses to be tamed. The desire you were shamed for. The anger that got labelled "too much." The instinct that does not care what is polite.

The sign is the flavour. Lilith in Scorpio is said to bristle at different rules than Lilith in Libra or Pisces. Each sign page below spells out the version that sign is known for.

The house is the arena: where in life that untamed streak tends to show up. Lilith in the 7th is often read through partners and close one-on-ones; in the 10th, through bosses, career and public image; in the 2nd, through money and self-worth.

Planets touching it add voices. A close conjunction or opposition from the Moon, Venus or Mars is often read as making Lilith louder and more personal.

None of this is a verdict. Lilith is a mirror for honest questions, not a prediction. The useful question is simple: where have I been editing myself to be liked, and what would happen if I stopped?

What house is my Lilith in?

Try this today

  • If you are unsure of your birth time, run it twice, 30 minutes apart. If the house does not change, you are fine.
  • Compare Placidus and whole sign. If they differ, read both house descriptions.

The sign of your Lilith depends on the day you were born. The house depends on the minute and the place, because houses are carved out of the sky that was rising and culminating over your birthplace.

The calculator does it in three steps. It turns your local birth time into UTC, accounting for daylight saving in your time zone. It works out local sidereal time and your Ascendant, the same way our rising sign calculator does. Then it divides the sky into twelve Placidus houses, the most common system in Western astrology, and checks which one holds each Lilith. It also shows the whole-sign house, where the sign on your Ascendant is the whole 1st house, if that differs.

Two cautions. The Ascendant moves about one degree every four minutes, so a birth time that is half an hour off can shift a house cusp by several degrees. And above about 66° latitude Placidus breaks down, because some degrees of the zodiac never rise or set. There the calculator falls back to whole-sign houses and says so.

Black Moon Lilith is the Moon's apogee, the one on this page. Asteroid Lilith (1181) is a real minor planet in the main belt, discovered in 1927 and named for the composer Lili Boulanger. Dark Moon Lilith (also called Waltemath's moon) is the hypothetical second moon that was never confirmed. Charts can show all three, so check the label.

True Lilith sign crossings, 2026 (26) and 2027 (26)

All times are UTC. In the Americas the local date can be a day earlier; in Asia and Australia a day later.

Quick answers

How do I find my Black Moon Lilith sign?

Put your birth date into the calculator on this page. The date alone gives your mean Lilith sign, because mean Lilith moves only about 0.11° a day and stays in each sign roughly 8.8 months. Add a birth time and place to get the degree, the house, and a precise true Lilith.

What house is my Lilith in?

You need your birth time and place for that. The calculator works out your Ascendant and Placidus house cusps from local sidereal time, then shows the house for both mean and true Lilith, plus the whole-sign house if it differs. A birth time off by even 20 minutes can move a cusp several degrees, so check the time on your birth certificate if you can.

Mean vs true Lilith: which one should I use?

Start with mean Lilith. It moves smoothly and it is the version many apps show by default. True (osculating) Lilith is the apogee of the Moon's orbit at one instant, and it swings up to about 30° either side of the mean. Between 1940 and 2040 the two were in the same sign on 63.7% of days. If yours differ, read the mean sign first and the true sign as a second layer.

Why does my Lilith sign differ between apps?

Almost always because one app shows mean Lilith and another shows true (osculating) Lilith. A few apps also offer an interpolated or "natural" apogee, a third calculation. Check the app's settings for the word mean, true, osculating or interpolated.

Where is Black Moon Lilith now in 2026?

As of Oct 26, 2026, mean Lilith is at 4°39′ Capricorn and true Lilith is at 13°40′ Sagittarius. Mean Lilith entered Capricorn on Sep 14, 2026, 17:04 UTC and leaves on Jun 11, 2027, 10:06 UTC.

When does Lilith change signs in 2027?

Mean Lilith changes sign into Aquarius on Jun 11, 2027, 10:06 UTC in 2027. True Lilith wobbles across sign lines much more often: 26 crossings in 2027 by our count.

Can I calculate Lilith without a birth time?

Yes, for the mean Lilith sign. It barely moves in a day, so the date is enough unless you were born within a few hours of a sign change. True Lilith can move several degrees in a day, so without a time the calculator shows the range it covered. The house needs a time.

Is Black Moon Lilith a planet or an asteroid?

Neither. It is a point in space: the far end (apogee) of the Moon's orbit, projected onto the zodiac. There is nothing to see there. The asteroid 1181 Lilith is a separate object, and "Dark Moon Lilith" refers to a hypothetical second moon that was never confirmed.
