April zodiac signs: Aries, then Taurus
April has two zodiac signs: Aries on every date from 1 to 18 April and Taurus on every date from 21 April, in US and UK time from 1951 to 2030. The Sun moves into Taurus on 19 or 20 April. In the US that now usually happens on the 19th; in the UK, on the 20th.

April zodiac signs by date
Each row gives the sign for that April date in US Eastern time, checked against every year from 1951 to 2030. Every date up to 18 April is Aries without exception, and every date from 21 April is Taurus. The two in the middle, 19 and 20 April, are the ones where the Sun changed sign during the day in some years, and the rest of this page is mostly about them.

The face rulers in the third column come from the Chaldean order, the sequence Saturn, Jupiter, Mars, Sun, Venus, Mercury, Moon laid round the zodiac in 10° steps. April holds three of them: the Sun and Venus for Aries, then Mercury for the start of Taurus.
When does Taurus start: 19 or 20 April?
Count every year from 1951 to 2030 and the start of Taurus in US Eastern time splits almost down the middle. The Sun crossed 0° Taurus on 19 April in 39 years and on 20 April in 41. No third date appears. On those totals a table that prints "Taurus begins 20 April" and one that prints "19 April" are each right a little under half the time, and neither is wrong often enough to look broken, which is how both versions have survived in print.
The near tie is really two different periods added together. Split the same years by decade and the answer changes sides around 1980:
| Decade | Taurus began 19 April | Taurus began 20 April |
|---|---|---|
| 1950s | 2 of 9 | 7 of 9 |
| 1960s | 3 of 10 | 7 of 10 |
| 1970s | 3 of 10 | 7 of 10 |
| 1980s | 6 of 10 | 4 of 10 |
| 1990s | 4 of 10 | 6 of 10 |
| 2000s | 6 of 10 | 4 of 10 |
| 2010s | 6 of 10 | 4 of 10 |
| 2020s | 8 of 10 | 2 of 10 |
In the 1960s the US start fell on 20 April in 7 of 10 years, and in the 1970s in 7 of 10. Since then 19 April has led in every decade except the 1990s, and in the 2020s the count is 8 of 10 for the 19th. For anyone born in the US from 2000 to 2030 it is 21 years on 19 April against 10 on 20 April. The slide comes from the leap-year rule, not from any change in the Sun: the calendar year runs a few minutes long between century corrections, and 2000, being a leap year, did not correct it. The May page sets out the arithmetic.
This is what goes wrong with the most-asked form of the question. Search tools and AI assistants tend to answer "western zodiac Taurus date range" with "April 20 to May 20". The start of that range is the mid-century American answer, and it is still the British one: in UK time Taurus began on 20 April in 61 of the 80 years and on 19 April in only 19. For a baby born in New York in the 2020s, though, 19 April is the usual first day of Taurus, 8 years in 10. The end of the range is a separate question with its own data on the May zodiac signs page.
One date is never the start in American or British time, and some popular tables use it anyway: 21 April. In US Eastern time that date was Taurus from midnight in 80 of the 80 years, and the same holds in Central, Pacific and UK time. The 21st only becomes a changeover day on the far side of the date line. In Sydney, ten hours ahead of UTC in late April, Taurus began on 21 April in 13 of the 80 years, on 20 April in 66, and on 19 April in 1 year.
So the one-line answer depends on who is asking. An American born since 2000 most often starts Taurus on 19 April. A Briton most often starts it on 20 April. An Australian on the east coast usually starts it on 20 April too, with 21 April a real possibility in older birth years.
Is 19 April Aries or Taurus?
Aries, unless the birth came after the Sun's crossing that day, and how often a crossing falls on the 19th depends heavily on where the birth was registered. In US Eastern time the Sun reached Taurus during 19 April in 39 of the 80 years. On the Pacific coast, three hours behind New York, the figure rises to 47. In London it drops to 19, and in Sydney it happened in 1 year out of 80.
| April date, time zone | Aries all day | Taurus began during the day | Taurus all day |
|---|---|---|---|
| 19 April, US Eastern | 41 years | 39 years | 0 years |
| 19 April, US Central | 39 years | 41 years | 0 years |
| 19 April, US Pacific | 33 years | 47 years | 0 years |
| 19 April, UK | 61 years | 19 years | 0 years |
| 19 April, Sydney | 79 years | 1 years | 0 years |
| 20 April, US Eastern | 0 years | 41 years | 39 years |
| 20 April, US Central | 0 years | 39 years | 41 years |
| 20 April, US Pacific | 0 years | 33 years | 47 years |
| 20 April, UK | 0 years | 61 years | 19 years |
| 20 April, Sydney | 13 years | 65 years | 2 years |
The recent decade is the one that matters for most readers looking up a child's sign. From 2021 to 2030 the Eastern-time count for a crossing on 19 April is 8 years in 10, so an American 19 April birthday now usually includes the start of Taurus, and the birth time settles which side of it the baby landed.
Is 20 April Taurus or Aries?
In the US, Taurus for most or all of the day. In Eastern time 20 April was Taurus from midnight in 39 years and opened as Aries in the other 41, changing at some hour of the day. British births turn those odds round: in UK time the crossing fell during 20 April in 61 of 80 years and the whole day was Taurus in only 19. A London birth on 20 April is the case on this page where the clock time decides the sign most often.
The test for either date is one comparison. Find the Taurus start time for the birth year in the table below, in the zone where the birth happened. A birth time earlier than that is Aries; the same minute or later is Taurus. For a birth in a zone the table does not show, the zodiac sign calculator converts it.
Midnight cases do occur. In 2024 the crossing in Sydney came at 12:00 am on 20 April, rounded to the minute. A Sydney birth late on 19 April 2024 is Aries, but one in the first minute of the 20th sits inside the rounding, and a birth certificate rarely records the seconds that would settle it.

2026 shows the Atlantic split in one evening. Taurus began at 9:39 pm on 19 April in New York, when it was already 2:39 am on 20 April in London. A New Yorker born that night after the crossing and a Londoner born at the same instant share a Sun sign but not a birthday. In 2027 the Pacific clock reads 12:18 am on 20 April at the crossing, only just past midnight, so a Los Angeles birth late on 19 April 2027 stays Aries.
Over the whole 1951 to 2030 run the earliest crossing comes in 2028, at 19 April, 9:09 am Eastern, and the latest in 1951, at 20 April, 4:48 pm. Those two instants are more than a day apart on the calendar, which is the full width of the April cusp.
Aries in April: the Sun's exaltation, then Venus's decan
Ptolemy names Aries as the Sun's exaltation and gives a seasonal reason. The Sun in Aries "is making his transition to the northern and higher semicircle", where "the length of the day and the heating power of his nature begin to increase" (Tetrabiblos I.19). The same chapter makes Aries the depression of Saturn, the sign opposite Saturn's exaltation in Libra, and an earlier one gives Aries to Mars as one of his two houses, with Scorpio (I.17). An April Aries is therefore a Mars-ruled birth in the sign where the Sun is strongest and Saturn weakest. That combination is the textbook root of the sign's reputation for starting things and disliking delay.
None of April's Aries birthdays falls in the first decan. From 1 April until the Sun reaches 20° Aries on 9 or 10 April, the Sun is in the second decan, whose face is the Sun, the planet exalted in the sign. From then to the Taurus change it is in the third decan, given to Venus. Astrologers who use faces read the mid-April Aries as the more sociable end of the sign. It is a shading inside one sign, not a second type.
In ordinary terms an April Aries is the neighbour who has repainted the fence before the rest of the street has finished discussing it, the junior nurse who volunteers for the awkward shift and wants a different rota by summer, the person who answers an email within four minutes and forgets the attachment. That is temperament, not fate. It does not mean aggressive or selfish, which is the cheap reading of a Mars sign, and a Taurus Moon or a Capricorn rising can make the same Sun look patient.
Aries born from 2026 carry a generational signature as well. Neptune entered Aries on 30 March 2025, slipped back into Pisces on 22 October 2025, and returned on 26 January 2026; it stays until 22 May 2038, with a last spell in Aries from 21 October 2038 to 23 March 2039. Saturn arrived on 25 May 2025, went back to Pisces on 1 September 2025, re-entered Aries on 14 February 2026, and moves on to Taurus on 13 April 2028. So the Aries birthdays of April 2026 and April 2027, and of April 2028 before that date, have Saturn in its traditional fall and Neptune in the Sun's own sign. The full sign is on Aries dates and traits.
Taurus in April: Venus's sign, Mercury's decan
Every April Taurus is a first-decan Taurus. The Sun runs through the first 10° of the sign from the change on 19 or 20 April until a date from 29 April to 1 May, and the Chaldean face of those degrees is Mercury. It looks an odd pairing, the quickest planet on the slowest sign, and the traditional reading is a Taurus who talks, trades and bargains more than the stereotype allows. Venus rules the whole sign, by the traditional rule as her night house, and the Moon is exalted in it, but Mercury colours the April stretch.
The late-April Taurus might be the market trader who remembers every regular's order, the friend who will haggle for twenty minutes over a second-hand sofa and enjoy all of it, the office manager whose emails are short and whose decisions do not change once sent. It does not mean lazy or greedy. Staying put is a choice in this sign, and it is the thing most often mistaken for a lack of drive.
Saturn reaches Taurus on 13 April 2028, a few days before the 2028 Sun ingress on 19 April, so every Taurus born from late April 2028 has Saturn in the same sign as the Sun. Taurus dates and traits covers the May half of the sign and the Uranus-in-Taurus years that ended in 2026.
How common are April birthdays?
April is one of the quietest months for births. Across 2000 to 2014 the average April date saw 11,024 US births, −2.9% against the all-year mean of 11,350, which ranks April 11th of the 12 months. The busiest April date, 4 April, managed only 11,623 (+2.4%, 111th of 366), so no April date reaches the top hundred. The quietest was 1 April, at 10,316 and 355th. The daily counts do not say why 1 April sits so low, and no cause is claimed here.

Split by sign, the always-Aries April dates averaged 11,052 births and the always-Taurus dates 10,970. At the scale of whole signs the order flips, because Taurus also collects most of May. Across every registry in the Shymea rarity study, Taurus is the more common of the two April signs:

| Days the Sun spends in the sign | 30.46 | 30.97 |
Neither sign is rare. Out of 62.2 million US births assigned to their exact ingress minutes, Aries ranked 8th and Taurus 6th. Part of the Taurus lead is simply time: the Sun spends 30.97 days in Taurus on average against 30.46 in Aries, because it slows as Earth moves towards its July aphelion.
Which constellation is the Sun in during April?
For most of the month, not Aries. On the International Astronomical Union's boundaries the Sun stood in front of the stars of Pisces until 19 April, 02:30 UTC in 2026, then crossed into the constellation Aries and stayed there until 14 May, 13:58 UTC. Tropical Taurus began that year at 20 April, 01:39 UTC, less than a day after the Sun reached the stars of Aries.
| Constellation behind the Sun, 2026 | Sun enters (UTC) | Sun leaves (UTC) |
|---|---|---|
| Pisces | 12 March, 14:31 UTC | 19 April, 02:30 UTC |
| Aries | 19 April, 02:30 UTC | 14 May, 13:58 UTC |
In practice the sign Aries in April is the constellation Pisces, and the sign Taurus in late April is the constellation Aries. The tropical signs are tied to the equinox; the stars have drifted against it by most of a sign since antiquity. Sidereal zodiacs, used mainly in Indian astrology, follow the stars and so call most April birthdays Pisces or Aries. That is a separate system rather than a correction, and every date here is tropical.

The Taurus change in 2027 falls at 3:18 am US Eastern on 20 April, and the Full Moon follows on 20 April, 6:27 pm Eastern, at 0°37′ Scorpio. A Full Moon that close to the ingress means a baby born on the evening of 20 April 2027 has the Sun in the opening degree of Taurus and the Moon directly across from it.
Venus enters Aries on 19 April, 11:57 pm Eastern, which is already 20 April, 4:57 am in London, so New York sees Venus change sign the day before the Sun and London sees both on the 20th. Earlier in the month Mars ends its retrograde at 20°56′ Leo on 1 April, 10:08 am Eastern, Jupiter turns direct at 17°00′ Leo on 12 April, 10:11 pm Eastern, and Chiron moves into Taurus on 14 April, 10:58 am. The Aries 2027 horoscope and Taurus 2027 horoscope carry the year date by date.
March and May
March runs from Pisces into Aries at the equinox, and that cusp behaves differently, settling on one date in most years: March zodiac signs. May finishes Taurus and hands over to Gemini: May zodiac signs. The zodiac signs by date hub lists every month and sign on one page.
April birthdays and their signs: questions people ask
- Is the western zodiac Taurus date range 20 April to 20 May?
- It is the traditional printed range, and it is right for a British birth in most years. In US Eastern time Taurus began on 19 April in 39 of the 80 years from 1951 to 2030 and in 8 of the 10 years 2021 to 2030, so for recent American births 19 April is the usual start. The end of Taurus, 20 or 21 May, is dated year by year on the May page.
- Is 19 April Aries or Taurus?
- Aries until the Sun's crossing, if it falls that day. In US Eastern time Taurus began during 19 April in 39 of 80 years, and in 8 of the 10 years from 2021 to 2030. In UK time it did so in only 19 of 80 years.
- Is 20 April Aries or Taurus?
- Usually Taurus in the US: in Eastern time 20 April was Taurus all day in 39 of 80 years and Aries until a time in the day in 41. In the UK the change fell during 20 April in 61 of 80 years, so a British 20 April birth needs the birth time.
- What zodiac sign is 12 April?
- Aries, in every year and time zone. On 12 April the Sun is in the third decan of Aries, the face the Chaldean order gives to Venus.
- What zodiac sign is 1 April?
- Aries, always. 1 April falls in the second decan of Aries, whose face ruler is the Sun, the planet Ptolemy exalts in Aries.
- Is Aries a rare zodiac sign?
- No. Aries was 8.14% of US births from 2000 to 2014, 8th of the 12 signs, and 8.27% of births in England and Wales in 2025. The rarest US sign is Capricorn at 7.63%.
