The 12th is the last house, the sign just above the eastern horizon that had already risen when you were born. Old texts called it the house of the Bad Spirit and linked it with hidden enemies, confinement and loss. Modern astrologers read it more gently: rest, dreams, solitude, the unconscious, hospitals and retreats, the things you do when nobody is watching.
Online you will find people celebrating an empty 12th as "no hidden enemies" or "no karmic baggage". We would not go that far. Everyone has an inner life and everyone needs rest. What an empty 12th tends to describe is that the hidden stuff is not a heavy, constant presence. You may find it easier to name your feelings, or simply less pulled towards isolation.
The sign on the 12th describes how you recharge. Pisces there (Aries rising) needs water, music and sleep. Virgo there (Libra rising) recharges by tidying. Gemini there (Cancer rising) needs a journal or a podcast to quiet the mind.

Because the 12th sits right above the Ascendant, a planet in the late degrees of the 12th can sit close to your rising degree. In whole-sign houses, an empty 12th means none of that. In Placidus, the 12th can contain the end of one sign and the start of the next, so your Placidus 12th may hold a planet that your whole-sign chart puts in the 1st. Worth checking both before you decide what you have.
