Empty houses in astrology: what they really mean

No planets in a house is not a missing piece of your life. It is simple arithmetic, and astrologers have had a way to read it for about two thousand years.

At a glance

An empty house is a house with no planets in it, and it is normal. Ten planets cannot fill twelve houses, so every chart has at least 2. In our sample of 120,000 birth charts the most common number was 6. You read an empty house through the planet that rules its sign.

The short answer

An empty house is not an empty life

Try this today

  • Count the empty houses in your chart. If it is five or six, you are bang on average.
  • Pick the empty house that worries you most and read its page below.

You pulled up your chart, saw a few slices of the wheel with nothing in them, and wondered what you are missing. Good news: nothing. An empty house is just a house where no planet happened to be at the moment you were born.

It is also unavoidable. There are ten planets in a modern chart (the Sun and Moon count) and twelve houses, so at least two are always empty. In practice planets bunch together. Mercury and Venus stay close to the Sun, and the slow outer planets share signs with everyone born the same year, so the typical chart has around 6 empty houses. Our sample found 2 to 9.

So when a site says "an empty 7th house means you will never marry", you can relax. About half of all charts have an empty 7th, and about half of all charts have an empty 10th. People with both still fall in love and pay rent.

How to read one

Follow the ruler: the method astrologers actually use

The house is empty; the ruler is busy somewhere else.Photo: Justin Pauley / Burst

Every house has a sign on it, even when it holds no planets, and every sign has a ruling planet. That ruler is the key to an empty house. The technique goes back to Hellenistic astrology, roughly two thousand years ago, and it is still widely taught today.

The steps are simple. Find the sign on the empty house. Find that sign's ruler (Venus for Taurus and Libra, Mars for Aries, and so on). Then find which house the ruler sits in. That house is where the empty house's business gets done.

Example: an empty 7th house in Libra means Venus rules your partnerships. If Venus is in your 10th, astrologers would say you are likely to meet partners through work or public life. The finder below does this for every empty house in your chart at once.

Why it happens

Why some of your houses fill and others stay empty

Empty houses come from the speed of planets, not from your character.Photo: Shelby Bowers / Burst

The Sun drags company along. Mercury never gets more than about 28° from the Sun and Venus never more than about 47°, so the house your Sun is in, and the ones beside it, are the likeliest to be busy. The house opposite your Sun is the one most often empty.

The outer planets do the rest. Uranus, Neptune and Pluto move so slowly that everyone born within a few years shares their signs. For a whole generation, the same sign carries two or three of them, which leaves more houses free.

That is why empty houses are not a personal flaw. They come from the speed of planets, not from your character.

House systems

Whole-sign or Placidus: why your empty houses can change

Both are legitimate traditions.Photo: Brodie / Burst

Which houses are empty depends on the house system. In whole-sign houses, the oldest system, each house is exactly one sign, starting with your rising sign. In Placidus, popular on modern apps, houses have unequal sizes, so a planet near a boundary can sit in a different house.

Our finder and statistics use whole-sign houses because they are simple, stable and need nothing but the rising sign. If another site shows a planet in a house that we mark as empty, check its house system before deciding which chart is "right". Both are legitimate traditions.

Over time

Transits fill every house eventually

Your natal chart is fixed, but the sky keeps moving. Every planet passes through every house: the Moon in a couple of days, the Sun in a month, Jupiter in about a year, Saturn in about two and a half. Empty houses get their busy seasons too.

Myth check

What an empty house never means

No children, no marriage, no money, no friends, no career, bad health. None of these follow from an empty house in any tradition we know of. Astrology is a language for reflection; it does not hand out life sentences.

Quick answers

What does it mean when a house is empty in astrology?

No planet sat in that part of the sky when you were born. The house still has a sign and a ruling planet, and you read it through them. It does not mean that area of life is missing.

Is it bad to have empty houses?

No. Every chart has at least 2, and the most common number in our sample was 6. Empty houses are normal.

What does an empty 7th house mean?

No planet sits in your Descendant sign. Partnership is read through that sign's ruler and Venus. It does not mean you will not marry. Full page: empty 7th house.

How many empty houses is normal?

With ten planets, our sample averaged 5.61 empty houses, and 85% of charts had five or more.

How do I find my empty houses?

Use the finder on this page with your birth date, time and place. It uses whole-sign houses and lists each empty house with its ruler.

Do empty houses matter?

They matter in the sense that the house ruler becomes the main clue. Many astrologers say an empty house is simply less emphasised, not less important.

Can empty houses change in 2026 or 2027?

Your birth chart never changes, but transiting planets pass through every house. With Saturn in Aries from 2026, whichever house holds Aries in your chart gets a long, serious visit.
