You arrive somewhere misty and beautiful and something in you goes quiet. You paint again, you dream vividly, you cry at sunsets. Weeks drift by. That is a Neptune line at its most enchanting.
Neptune was found in 1846, its position predicted from the tug it put on Uranus. Modern astrology made it the planet of imagination, music, spirituality, compassion, illusion and escape. In astrocartography its lines are read as places where the boundary between you and the world softens.
For artists, musicians, healers and anyone on a spiritual path, that can be a gift. The tradition's warning is that softness cuts both ways: confusion, idealising people, deception and drifting are the classic Neptune complaints.
Neptune moves very slowly, about 14 years per sign, so it says more about a generation than a person. Its lines, as always, are yours alone.

On the setting line, Neptune comes through partners. Astrocartographers read idealised love, spiritual connections, artistic collaborators and a strong pull to rescue or be rescued.
It can be deeply romantic and compassionate. It can also be where you see someone as you wish they were.
Take your time. On a Neptune DC line, the second impression matters more than the first.

History
The planet found with a pencil
Neptune was located in 1846 after Urbain Le Verrier and John Couch Adams calculated where an unseen planet must be to explain Uranus's wandering orbit. Johann Galle found it close to the predicted spot. Astrology adopted it in the modern era, so its meanings are modern readings.
