August starts with the biggest sky event of 2027. The new Moon on Monday, August 2 is a total solar eclipse, listed in NASA's eclipse catalogue, and our ephemeris puts it at 9° Leo. The Moon is in Leo on August 2 and 3 and in Virgo on August 4 and 5, so the month opens with four waxing hair days, and the first one is the eclipse.
That creates a small puzzle for anyone following the Moon calendar. On the folk rules alone, August 2 is a growth day. But many Moon calendars skip eclipse days, so the cautious picks are Tuesday, August 3 (Leo, for body) and Wednesday, August 4 or Thursday, August 5 (Virgo, for shape). Those are back-to-school weeks in much of the US, so a midweek appointment may be easier to find anyway.
The hair days come back at the end of the month, this time waning. The Moon is in Leo on Sunday, August 29 and Monday, August 30 and in Virgo on Tuesday, August 31, the same day as August's second new Moon, at 8° Virgo. Those are the shape days for a cut that should hold through September.
