The year

The 2027 full moons, from Wolf Moon to Cold Moon

Try this today

  • Put Jan 22 in your calendar now. A first full moon of the year is a good excuse for a winter walk.
  • Use the tool below to switch the whole list to your own time zone before you plan anything around it.
  • Glance at the Moon on the night before and after Jan 22. You will struggle to tell which night was "the" full moon.

Picture the first one. A January night, cold enough to see your breath, and a big round Moon coming up over the rooftops. The first full moon of 2027 peaks on Jan 22, 2027 · 12:17 UTC, with the Moon at 2°14′ Leo. In New York and Toronto that is Fri Jan 22, 07:17; in Sydney it is Fri Jan 22, 23:17.

From there the full moons arrive about every 29.5 days: Feb 20 in Virgo, Mar 22 in Libra, Apr 20 in Scorpio, May 20 in Scorpio, Jun 19 in Sagittarius, Jul 18 in Capricorn, Aug 17 in Aquarius, Sep 15 in Pisces, Oct 15 in Aries, Nov 14 in Taurus, and finally Dec 13 in Gemini, the Cold Moon. That makes 12 full moons in all, one per month.

The new moons run alongside, about two weeks off: the first is Jan 7, 2027 · 20:24 UTC at 17°18′ Capricorn, the last Dec 27, 2027 · 20:12 UTC at 5°50′ Capricorn. Because the cycle is a little shorter than most months, 2027 fits in 13 of them, and Capricorn gets two.

A full or new moon is a single instant, not a whole night. The Moon looks full for a day or so either side, which is why the minute matters when two calendars seem to disagree.

The sky behind it

A full moon is the instant the Moon's geocentric ecliptic longitude is 180° from the Sun's; a new moon is the instant they match. Computed with skyfield and NASA JPL's DE442 ephemeris, true ecliptic and equinox of date (tropical zodiac). All 25 instants of 2027 agree to the minute with the Royal Observatory of Belgium's published 2027 table.

Why calendars disagree about the date: 18 of 25 lunations change day by country

Same Moon, same minute. Different date on the fridge.Photo: Ravi Prakash / Burst

Try this today

  • When you see a moon date online, look for the time zone. If there is none, assume it is UTC or US Eastern and check.
  • If you live in Canada, Toronto and Montreal follow the New York column; Vancouver follows Los Angeles; Calgary follows Denver.
  • In Australia, Brisbane matches Sydney's clock outside daylight saving time; Perth runs two to three hours behind the east coast.

Here is a thing that trips people up every year. One website says the full moon is on the 20th, another says the 21st, and both are right.

The Moon reaches full at one instant for the whole planet. What changes is the date on your wall. Take the February full moon: Feb 20, 2027 · 23:23 UTC. That is Sat Feb 20, 18:23 in New York and Sat Feb 20, 15:23 in Los Angeles, but Sat Feb 20, 23:23 in London and Sun Feb 21, 10:23 in Sydney. June does it too: Fri Jun 18, 17:44 in Los Angeles, Fri Jun 18, 20:44 in Toronto, Sat Jun 19, 10:44 in Melbourne.

We checked all 25 lunations of 2027 across seven zones, from Los Angeles to Sydney. 18 of them land on a different calendar date somewhere on that list. Only 7 share one date everywhere.

It even changes the trivia. In the US, Canada and the UK, August 2027 has two new moons (Mon Aug 2 and Tue Aug 31 in New York), which some people call a black moon. In Australia the second of that pair has already ticked over into the next day and the next month, so the double new moon month there is September (Wed Sep 1 and Thu Sep 30 in Sydney).

The sky behind it

Local times use the IANA time zone database, so daylight saving is applied on the correct days: US clocks change on March 14 and November 7, 2027; the UK on March 28 and October 31; New South Wales on April 4 and October 3.

The names

Wolf, Snow, Harvest: the 2027 full moon names and when they fall

The Harvest Moon is not a month. It is whichever full moon sits closest to the equinox.Photo: Burst

Try this today

  • Watch the Harvest Moon rise on Wed Sep 15 (US). Around this time of year the Moon rises only a little later each night, so there are several bright early evenings in a row.
  • Make up a name for each month from what your own street looks like. A Pothole Moon is allowed.

The names most people know come from North America. The Old Farmer's Almanac lists them by month and traces them to Native American, Colonial American and European sources: January Wolf, February Snow, March Worm, April Pink, May Flower, June Strawberry, July Buck, August Sturgeon, September Corn, October Hunter's, November Beaver, December Cold. NASA uses the same list in its monthly sky notes. They are folk names, not official astronomy.

Two of them follow the Sun instead of the calendar. The Harvest Moon is the full moon closest to the September equinox. In 2027 the equinox comes on Sep 23, 2027 · 06:01 UTC, and the nearest full moon is Sep 15, 2027 · 23:03 UTC, 7.3 days earlier, at 22°53′ Pisces. So September's full moon takes the Harvest name this year, and October's becomes the Hunter's Moon: Oct 15, 2027 · 13:47 UTC at 21°59′ Aries.

Below the equator the seasons flip, and the farm names do not fit. If you apply the same rule to the March equinox (Mar 20, 2027), as some southern-hemisphere stargazers do, the autumn Harvest Moon for Australia is Mar 22 at 1°35′ Libra.

And the blue moon? By the popular rule, two full moons in one calendar month, there is no blue moon in 2027 in any of the time zones above. By the older Maine Farmers' Almanac rule, the third full moon in a season that has four, it is May 20, 2027 · 10:59 UTC in Scorpio.

The eclipses

Five eclipses ride on the 2027 lunations, with the big one on Aug 2

An eclipse is just a new or full moon that lines up with the Moon's node. 2027 has 5 of them.Johann Gabriel Doppelmayr, Atlas Novus Coelestis, 1742

Try this today

  • If you can travel, read up on the Aug 2 path of totality now. Accommodation along eclipse paths books early.
  • Never look at a partial or annular solar eclipse without certified eclipse glasses (ISO 12312-2).

Most months the Moon passes a little above or below the Sun's path, so nothing is blocked. When a new or full moon happens close to one of the Moon's nodes, the shadows line up, and you get an eclipse.

2027 has 5:

  • Annular solar eclipse, Feb 6, 2027 · 15:56 UTC, new moon at 17°38′ Aquarius. The Moon looks slightly smaller than the Sun, so the centre line sees a ring of fire.
  • Penumbral lunar eclipse, Feb 20, 2027 · 23:23 UTC, full moon at 2°06′ Virgo. Penumbral magnitude 0.93.
  • Penumbral lunar eclipse, Jul 18, 2027 · 15:44 UTC, full moon at 25°49′ Capricorn. Penumbral magnitude 0.00.
  • Total solar eclipse, Aug 2, 2027 · 10:05 UTC, new moon at 9°55′ Leo. The Moon looks slightly larger than the Sun, so the centre line sees totality.
  • Penumbral lunar eclipse, Aug 17, 2027 · 07:28 UTC, full moon at 24°12′ Aquarius. Penumbral magnitude 0.55.

All three lunar eclipses are penumbral, the faint kind: the Moon only enters Earth's outer shadow. The Jul 18 one barely grazes it (magnitude 0.002), so you will not see any change. The Feb 20 eclipse, at 0.93, may show a soft grey shading on one side of the Moon.

Astrologers watch which signs the eclipses fall in. In 2027 they cluster on the Aquarius-Leo axis, with Virgo and Capricorn in the mix.

The sky behind it

Lunar eclipses from skyfield's eclipse search on DE442. A solar eclipse is flagged when, near the new moon, the smallest Sun-Moon separation is less than the two apparent radii plus the Moon's parallax minus the Sun's. Annular or total from the Moon-to-Sun size ratio at that moment (Feb 6: 0.915; Aug 2: 1.061). All five dates match NASA GSFC.

How astrologers use the 2027 lunations, sign by sign

New moon: plant it. Full moon: see what grew. The sign tells you which garden.Photo: Cindy Malette / Burst

Try this today

  • Look up your birth chart and note which house holds each sign. Then read the degree column below as your personal calendar.
  • At the Jan 7 new moon, write one line you want to see by the Capricorn new moon on Dec 27. Same sign, almost a year apart.
  • Pick the full moon in your own Sun sign (the tool below highlights it) and plan something that finishes or celebrates.

In astrology the lunar cycle works like breathing. The new moon is the start: the traditional time to begin something, set an intention or open a fresh page. The full moon, about two weeks later, is the peak, when things come to light, feel louder or reach a finish. It is a rhythm to reflect with, not a promise about what will happen.

The sign sets the theme. A new moon always sits in the same sign as the Sun, so 2027's new moons walk through the year's Sun signs in order, starting with Capricorn on Jan 7. A full moon sits in the opposite sign, so the January full moon is in Leo while the Sun is in Aquarius.

Two patterns stand out this year. Scorpio and Capricorn host the most lunations, three each: Scorpio catches two full moons in a row (Apr 20 at 0°37′ and May 20 at 29°14′), one at the very start of the sign and one at its last degree, and Capricorn opens and closes the year with new moons (Jan 7 at 17°18′ and Dec 27 at 5°50′). And the eclipse new moons in Aquarius and Leo are the ones astrologers will call the year's biggest resets.

The personal part is the house. Each lunation's degree lands in one of the twelve houses of your birth chart, and that house is the area of life astrologers read it through: money, home, partners, work. The same full moon can light up one friend's career and another's love life.
