  • Use the city finder below to check your exact local times, or a city you could travel to.
  • Book early if you want Luxor, Tangier or the Costa de la Luz. August is high season even without an eclipse.
  • Order certified ISO 12312-2 eclipse glasses well ahead. Only totality is safe to look at without them.

Picture a Monday morning in late summer. Cafés in Tarifa are putting out chairs, the light over the Strait of Gibraltar is already hot and white, and then, a little before eleven, it starts to go wrong in the most beautiful way. The shadows sharpen. The air cools. And for nearly five minutes, the Sun is simply gone.

That is the total solar eclipse of August 2, 2027. NASA's Goddard eclipse team maps the path of totality starting in the Atlantic, crossing the Strait of Gibraltar (southern Spain and northern Morocco), then sweeping across Algeria, Tunisia, Libya and Egypt, over the Red Sea into Saudi Arabia and Yemen, and out past Somalia into the Indian Ocean. The path is about 258 km wide at greatest eclipse, by NASA's figure.

The middle of the show is Egypt. Our calculation puts greatest eclipse at 10:06:41 UTC near 25.5°N, 33.16°E, a short way from the temples of Luxor, where totality lasts 6m 24s with the Sun almost straight overhead (82° high). No total eclipse will last that long over land again until 2114, which is why people call it the eclipse of the century.

Outside the path you still get a partial eclipse across Europe, Africa and western Asia: about 86.3% of the Sun covered in Madrid, 94.8% in Cairo and 41.9% in London. The Americas miss out; in New York the Sun hasn't risen yet.

The sky behind it

Greatest eclipse = the moment the Moon's shadow axis passes closest to Earth's centre: 2027-08-02T10:06:41Z (ΔT 69 s), gamma 0.1421. NASA GSFC lists 10:06:28.6 UT using an older ΔT of 84.8 s, gamma 0.1419, 25°29.6′N 33°13.2′E, magnitude 1.0790, path width 257.7 km, duration 6m 22.6s, Saros 136 (member 38 of 71). The astrology

A solar eclipse in Leo at 9°55′ Leo: what it means

The Sun's own sign, and for a few minutes the Sun goes out.Alexander Jamieson, A Celestial Atlas, 1822 · US Naval Observatory Library

Try this today

  • Write down one thing you'd make, perform or share if you weren't worried about being seen. Read it again on August 2, 2027.
  • Check your chart for anything within a few degrees of 9°55′ Leo, or of the opposite point in Aquarius. That is where astrologers say you'll feel it most.
  • Leo rising, Leo Sun or Leo Moon? Use the house finder below; it lands on your 1st, so it's a personal year.

Astrologers have a soft spot for this one. Leo is the sign traditionally ruled by the Sun, so a total solar eclipse in Leo is the Sun being hidden in its own house. If eclipses are the sky's plot twists, this is the main character briefly stepping off stage.

The new moon is exact at Aug 2, 2027 · 10:05 UTC, with the Sun and Moon together at 9°55′ Leo. In the tradition, solar eclipses are read like supercharged new moons: beginnings, but ones that tend to arrive on their own schedule rather than yours. Leo's themes are visibility, creativity, pride, play, romance and the heart, so the questions this eclipse asks are about where you shine, who you make things for and what you love doing when nobody is grading you.

It also sits on the Leo-Aquarius eclipse axis. The Moon's mean north node is at 11°32′ Aquarius (retrograde, as the nodes usually are), so this eclipse falls 1.6° from the south node in Leo. Astrologers often read south-node eclipses as releasing ones: a chance to let a role, a habit or an old way of performing yourself fall away. It follows the August 12, 2026 total eclipse at 20°02′ Leo, so if 2026's eclipse stirred something in your life, this one is the next chapter. Treat all of this as a reflection prompt, not a forecast.

The sky behind it

Sun 9°55′ Leo, Moon 9°56′ Leo at greatest eclipse. Sidereal (Lahiri, ayanamsa 24.242°): 15°41′ Cancer, so in Vedic terms this is a Cancer eclipse. Mean node by Meeus, Astronomical Algorithms eq. 47.7.

  • If you'll be in the path, look a little to the side of the black Sun during totality for a bright point: that's Venus.
  • Compare the planet list below with your birth chart and note any planet within 3° of these positions.

An eclipse chart is just a snapshot of the whole sky at one moment, and this one has some neat details.

Venus is at 7°16′ Leo, only 2.6° from the eclipse. In astrological language that's a conjunction: Venus, the planet of love, money and pleasure, standing right next to the hidden Sun in a sign already about romance and creativity. Astronomers will tell you something more practical: during totality, Venus is one of the first "stars" that pops out in the dark sky, close to the Sun.

Mercury is at 29°56′ Cancer, on the very last degree of Cancer, about to cross into Leo. Mars is at 10°42′ Libra, roughly a sextile (60°) to the eclipse, off by 0.8°, and Uranus at 9°09′ Gemini makes another sextile, off by 0.8°. Sextiles are read as easy, cooperative angles, so the tradition would call this eclipse lively rather than grim.

Out at the slow end of the sky, Saturn is at 27°50′ Aries, finishing its pass through Aries, Neptune is at 6°31′ Aries (retrograde), Jupiter at 1°30′ Virgo and Pluto at 5°52′ Aquarius (retrograde). Those positions set the background mood of 2027, which the 2027 predictions page walks through.

Spain and Morocco

Two total eclipses in one year for Spain

Try this today

  • Seville or Madrid in August 2027? It is worth the trip south to the Costa de la Luz for totality.
  • Stand somewhere with open sky to the west too, and watch the Moon's shadow rush in across the land or sea.

Spain is having a moment. The total eclipse of August 12, 2026 crossed northern Spain in the evening, and almost a year later this one clips the south coast in the morning. Two totalities in the same country in under twelve months is the kind of thing eclipse chasers plan whole decades around.

Here's what our numbers show for the Strait. In Tarifa totality lasts 4m 42s; across the water in Tangier, 4m 52s, starting at 09:44 Moroccan time. Cádiz gets 2m 58s and Málaga, near the northern edge, gets 1m 56s from 10:48. Seville, just outside the path, tops out at 98.4%, which sounds close but is a completely different experience: at 99% it's still daytime, at 100% the stars come out.

The Sun is about 38° high there, nicely clear of buildings and hills, and late-summer weather along the Strait is usually kind, though the local levante wind can kick up haze. Pick a spot with a view of the southeast sky.

Egypt

Try this today

  • Plan for heat as much as for the eclipse: water, shade and a hat for the hours of partial phase either side.
  • Watch the ground just before totality for shadow bands, faint ripples of light that some observers see.

If Spain is the scenic option, Egypt is the main event. Totality in Luxor begins at 13:02 local time and lasts 6m 24s, with the Sun 82° up, almost at the top of the sky. August in Upper Egypt is reliably clear, which matters more than anything else for eclipse watching.

Not every Egyptian city is inside the path. By our calculation Aswan reaches 99.9%, just shy of total, and Cairo reaches 94.8%. Across the Red Sea, Jeddah gets 6m 00s of totality from 13:22 local time.

A practical note: the edges of the path shift by small amounts between calculation methods, so if you're planning to stand near a limit, check NASA's interactive map for your exact spot and move a few kilometres toward the centre line.

Your eclipse: the view from your city, and the house it lights up

Pick one of 30 cities for local times and how much of the Sun disappears, then pick your rising sign to see which part of your chart the 9°55′ Leo eclipse falls in.

What will you see from…

Total eclipse: 6 min 24 s of darkness, starting 13:02 local time.

Starts 11:40, peaks 13:05, ends 14:26 (UTC+3). The Sun stands about 82° high at the peak.

Never look at a partial phase without certified eclipse glasses (ISO 12312-2). Only during totality itself is it safe to look with the naked eye.

Where does the Leo eclipse land in your chart?

Pick your rising sign (whole-sign houses).

Aries rising: your 5th house.

Joy, romance, creativity and kids. Leo's own house theme, so the eclipse is extra on-brand for you.

How to watch without hurting your eyes

The only time it's safe to look at the Sun without protection is during totality itself, when the Moon covers it completely. For every partial moment before and after, use eclipse glasses that meet the ISO 12312-2 standard, or a pinhole projector. Ordinary sunglasses are not enough. Cameras, binoculars and telescopes need proper solar filters on the front. The American Astronomical Society keeps a list of safe suppliers.

Quick answers

what time is the solar eclipse on august 2 2027

Greatest eclipse is at 10:06 UTC. Locally, totality starts around 09:44 in Tangier, 10:45 in Cádiz, 13:02 in Luxor and 13:22 in Jeddah. Use the city finder on this page for more places.

what does the august 2027 solar eclipse mean astrologically

It's a total solar eclipse (a powerful new moon) at 9°55′ Leo, in the sign ruled by the Sun. Astrologers link it to fresh starts around creativity, self-expression, romance and visibility, and because it falls near the south node, to letting an old role go. Where it lands in your chart depends on your rising sign.

where is the 2027 total solar eclipse path

From the Atlantic across the Strait of Gibraltar (southern Spain, northern Morocco), over Algeria, Tunisia, Libya and Egypt, across the Red Sea to Saudi Arabia and Yemen, and out past Somalia, per NASA GSFC's map.

how long is totality in 2027

Up to about 6 minutes 23 seconds near Luxor, Egypt (NASA: 6m 22.6s; our calculation for Luxor city: 6m 24s). Southern Spain and Morocco get roughly 2 to 5 minutes.

can you see the 2027 eclipse in the uk or usa

The UK sees a partial eclipse, about 41.9% of the Sun covered in London at 10:00 BST. The USA sees nothing: the eclipse is over before sunrise on the East Coast.

is the 2027 eclipse in leo or cancer

Leo in the tropical zodiac Western astrology uses: 9°55′ Leo. In the sidereal zodiac (Lahiri) it's 15°41′ Cancer, so Vedic astrologers call it a Cancer eclipse.

is the 2027 eclipse the eclipse of the century

It's often called that because its totality, about 6 minutes 23 seconds in Egypt, won't be beaten over land until 2114. Only the July 2009 eclipse, mostly over ocean, ran longer this century.
