How it works
Two old rules, layered: the phase, then the sign

Try this today
- Growing it out? Circle the 29 waxing Leo and Virgo days and book your next trim on one.
- Keeping a short cut sharp? Use the waning hair days instead, and book the next one a Moon cycle later.
- Use a skip day for a conditioning night rather than leaving it empty.
You are standing at the mirror, pulling a strand forward, doing the maths on whether it can survive another month. Moon-calendar people would tell you to check the sky first. Not because the Moon reaches down and tugs your hair, but because people have been timing haircuts to it for a very long time, and it turns booking an appointment into a small ritual.
The calendar here stacks two folk rules. The phase comes first, in the form the Farmers' Almanac uses for its Best Days: from new Moon to full Moon the Moon is waxing, the half for growth, so a trim then is meant to help hair come back faster. From full to new it is waning, the half for slowing regrowth, which suits a fade, a fringe or a bob you want to keep tidy longer.
The sign comes second, from the European Moon-calendar books. Leo is the day for body and thickness, Virgo the day for a cut that sits well. Cancer, Scorpio and Pisces, the water signs, are skip days. Air signs suit colour, Aries and Sagittarius suit masks and oils, and Taurus and Capricorn are plain, perfectly fine days.
Put the two together and you get the top days: a waxing Moon in Leo or Virgo if you are growing it out, a waning Moon in Leo or Virgo if you want the cut to hold. Between November 2026 and December 2027 there are 29 of the first and 39 of the second.
The sky behind it
The Moon moves through all twelve signs in about 27.3 days, spending two to three days in each. That is why every month has a short Leo-and-Virgo stretch, and why it slides a couple of days earlier each month against the calendar. Signs here are tropical and geocentric, read from JPL DE442 at 12:00 UTC.
The hair days
Leo and Virgo: 68 days in fourteen months

Try this today
- Weekend-only booker? Grab one of the 6 waxing weekend hair days early: Feb 20, Mar 20, Mar 21, Apr 17 and on.
- Fine hair: book Leo. Hair that never sits right: book Virgo.
The Moon spends about two and a half days in each sign, so Leo and Virgo together give you roughly five hair days a month. Across the 426 days on this calendar it comes to 68, or 16% of the time. That is less often than it sounds when you also need a stylist with an opening.
They are not all equal. Only 29 of those days are waxing, the growth kind. April 2027 has the most growth days (5), and the longest unbroken run is Apr 14-18. November 2026, December 2026, October 2027, November 2027, December 2027 have no waxing hair day at all, so if you are growing your hair then, an ordinary waxing day outside the water signs is the fallback.
Leo days on their own are the body-and-volume days by the old books, 34 of them in all. If your hair is fine and you want it to look fuller, those are the ones to aim for, whatever the phase.
Weekends matter in real life. Of the 68 hair days, 22 fall on a Saturday or Sunday, and only 6 of those are waxing: Feb 20, Mar 20-21, Apr 17-18 and May 15.
The skip days
Cancer, Scorpio, Pisces: 106 days to rest the scissors

Try this today
- Open your month page and cross out the skip days first. What is left is your shortlist.
- Turn one skip evening a month into a hair-mask night.
The skip rule is the one Moon-calendar books repeat most firmly: when the Moon is in a water sign, leave your hair alone. There is no reason given beyond tradition, and you will not ruin anything by ignoring it. But if you like the ritual, it is the easiest rule to follow, because it simply removes days.
Those water-sign days add up to 106 of 426, about 25% of the calendar. They come in three blocks a month, each two or three days long, so there is always a gap between them.
Skip days make good mask nights. Deep conditioning is not a cut, so it does not break the rule, and it gives the evening a purpose. The full Moons are worth a glance too: Dec 24 in Cancer, Apr 20 in Scorpio, May 20 in Scorpio, Sep 15 in Pisces all land on skip days, while Jan 22 in Leo and Feb 20 in Virgo are the only full Moons in a hair sign.
Where the rule comes from
A Roman farmer would have booked the opposite day

Timing haircuts to the Moon is old, and written down. In Varro's On Agriculture, from the first century BC, a speaker named Agrasius says he learned a rule from his father and keeps it "not only in shearing my sheep but in cutting my hair, for fear that if I have it done when the moon is waxing I may become bald."
Notice the direction. Agrasius avoids the waxing Moon. The modern Farmers' Almanac convention does the reverse and recommends the waxing Moon for growth. So the folk rule has flipped at least once over two thousand years, which is a fair hint that it lives in custom, not in biology.
The sign layer, Leo and Virgo for hair and the water signs as skip days, is the version popular in German-speaking Moon-calendar books and magazines today. We follow that modern version because it is the one people are searching for, and we label it for what it is: tradition and reflection, not a hair-care claim.
Colour, masks and the rest
Not cutting? The other days still have a job

Try this today
- Planning colour and a cut together? A waxing Gemini or Aquarius day is fine for both by these rules.
- Keep a treatment day free the week after a big colour change.
Moon calendars do not stop at the scissors. A waxing Moon in an air sign, Gemini or Aquarius, is the classic colour slot, with Libra as the gentler alternative. There are 38 top-rated colour days on this calendar.
Aries and Sagittarius are the treatment days: masks, scalp oils, a deep-conditioning soak. That is 72 days in all. Taurus and Capricorn have no special job, which makes them perfectly good days for a quick tidy when the hair days do not fit your week.
Eclipses get their own note. Many Moon calendars leave eclipse days blank. 5 eclipses fall in this span, including the total solar eclipse of Aug 2, 2027 at 9°55′ Leo, which lands on a Leo day. The month pages flag each one so you can decide for yourself.

Why your day might differ from another calendar
The Moon changes sign at one instant worldwide, so a change late in the UTC day lands on the previous evening in the Americas. The tables read each day at 12:00 UTC; the finder re-reads it at noon where you are. Some sites also use the sidereal zodiac, which shifts every sign by about a day.

This calendar is for ritual and fun. It does not promise faster growth, thicker hair or anything medical. If your hair or scalp is worrying you, a dermatologist is the right call, whatever the Moon is doing.

Quick answers
What is the best day to cut hair according to the moon?
By the folk rules, a day when the Moon is in Leo or Virgo: waxing if you want it to grow, waning if you want the cut to hold. The next waxing hair day is Friday, Jan 22, 2027, and the next waning one is Sunday, Nov 1, 2026.
What are the best days to cut hair in 2027 for growth?
There are 29 waxing Leo and Virgo days in 2027. The longest run is Apr 14-18. April 2027 has the most growth days on this calendar.
Is it bad to cut your hair on a full moon?
Not by most Moon calendars. The full Moon is the turning point from waxing to waning, so it is neither growth nor hold. What matters more is the sign: Jan 22, 2027 and Feb 20, 2027 are the full Moons in a hair sign, while 4 full Moons in this span fall on water-sign skip days.
Which days should I avoid cutting hair by the moon?
Days when the Moon is in Cancer, Scorpio or Pisces. From November 2026 to December 2027 that is 106 days, two or three at a time, three times a month. Some calendars also skip eclipse days; there are 5 in this span.
Does cutting your hair by the moon actually work?
It is a folk tradition, not a proven method, and the rule has even reversed over time: the Roman writer Varro avoided the waxing Moon, while the Farmers' Almanac recommends it. Use it as a fun way to pick a day, not as a hair-growth treatment.
What does the Moon in Leo mean for a haircut?
Moon-calendar books call Leo the day for body and volume, especially for fine hair. There are 34 Leo days between November 2026 and December 2027. A waxing Leo day is the classic choice when you are also growing your hair out.
Is this moon haircut calendar in my time zone?
The tables are read at 12:00 UTC. The finder on this page re-reads every day at noon in your own time zone, so if the Moon changes sign overnight where you live, the finder shows your local answer.
