Chart shapes and hemispheres: the overall design

Before you interpret any single planet, step back far enough to see the chart as one design.

Before you interpret any single planet, step back far enough to see the chart as one design. Are the planets packed into a narrow arc? Spread around the wheel? Divided into opposing camps? Does most of the activity fall above the horizon, or gather below it?

These questions do not replace signs, houses, aspects, or planetary condition. They describe distribution: how concentrated or dispersed the chart’s resources appear, and where that concentration meets the angles. The value is orienting. You learn whether you are looking at a chart that tends to gather experience into a few channels or distribute attention across many.

The seven chart-shape names used here were codified by Marc Edmund Jones in The Guide to Horoscope Interpretation in 1941. Later astrologers altered definitions and thresholds, sometimes without saying so. There is no strong body of replicated research showing that these categories function as tested personality types. Treat them as interpretive heuristics—a heuristic being a disciplined prompt that helps you notice structure, not a law that settles meaning.

Geometry is a lens, not a verdict.

A reproducible measurement rule

Use the Sun, Moon, Mercury, Venus, Mars, Jupiter, Saturn, Uranus, Neptune, and Pluto. In this technique, Sun and Moon are counted as planets for convenience. Do not add the Ascendant, Midheaven, lunar nodes, Chiron, asteroids, or calculated points when determining shape.

That exclusion matters. The Ascendant and Descendant always oppose each other; so do the lunar nodes. Adding either pair manufactures balance that the planets themselves may not have. Adding enough minor bodies eventually turns almost every chart into a splash.

To measure a shape rather than merely guessing from the picture:

  1. Convert every planetary position to absolute longitude from 0° to 360°.
  2. Put the ten positions in zodiacal order.
  3. Calculate every gap between consecutive planets, including the wraparound gap from the last planet back to the first.
  4. Identify the largest gap.
  5. Subtract that gap from 360°. The result is the occupied span—the shortest continuous arc containing all ten planets.

If the largest empty gap is 146°, the occupied span is 214°. That chart cannot be a bowl under a strict 180° definition, however bowl-like it may look on a decorative wheel.

Count degrees, not occupied signs. A planet at 29° Aries and another at 1° Taurus are only 2° apart, not one sign apart in any meaningful geometric sense. Conversely, planets at 1° and 29° of the same sign are 28° apart.

Chart shape does not require houses, so it can often be assessed without a precise birth time. The Moon is the main caution because it moves roughly 12° to 15° per day. If the Moon sits near a pattern boundary, time uncertainty can change the classification. Say so rather than smoothing the chart into a preferred category.

Hemispheres: where the design is staged

Hemispheres depend on the angles and therefore on an accurate time and place. The Ascendant–Descendant axis is the horizon. The Midheaven–IC axis is the meridian, the north–south line through the local sky.

On a conventional quadrant-house wheel:

  • The upper hemisphere, houses 7 through 12, is above the horizon. It is also called the southern hemisphere of the chart.
  • The lower hemisphere, houses 1 through 6, is below the horizon and is called the northern hemisphere.
  • The eastern hemisphere, usually shown on the left, includes houses 10 through 3 and gathers around the Ascendant.
  • The western hemisphere, usually shown on the right, includes houses 4 through 9 and gathers around the Descendant.

The geographical labels can feel backward when you first meet them. Trust the axes, not your intuition about the printed page. If you use whole-sign houses, judge hemispheres from the actual horizon and meridian lines rather than assuming that house numbers reproduce astronomical halves exactly.

Each hemisphere suggests a mode of participation:

  • Upper emphasis places more planetary activity where life meets public systems, audiences, institutions, or consequences beyond the intimate circle. Public does not mean famous. Someone can have an upper-heavy chart and work quietly inside a large organization.
  • Lower emphasis concentrates development in personal foundations, private life, internal formation, or work done away from general view. Private does not mean shy or inactive. It describes where experience is incubated.
  • Eastern emphasis suggests that action often begins from your own timing, priorities, or internal signal. Other people still matter, but you are more likely to establish direction before negotiating it.
  • Western emphasis suggests that encounters call capacities into use. Partners, clients, competitors, collaborators, and audiences become occasions for development. This is responsiveness, not passivity.

These are symbolic reading conventions, not measured personality laws. Use counts to establish scale. A 5–5 division carries no hemispheric emphasis. A 6–4 split is a lean, easily modified by angularity and planetary condition. Seven or more planets on one side is a practical threshold for a clear emphasis, though not a sacred number.

Write down which planets create the majority. Eight planets above the horizon sounds decisive, but the picture needs qualification if four are slow planets shared by an age group. Check whether the Sun, Moon, Mercury, Venus, and Mars support the pattern. These faster bodies vary more between nearby births and usually make the emphasis more personally immediate.

A planet exactly on an axis should not be forced into one side simply to win a count. There is no universally accepted hemisphere orb. As a working rule, if a planet lies within about 2° of an angle, mark it as angular and borderline. Its contact with the axis may matter more than which half receives the tally.

The two axes also create four quadrants:

  • Houses 1–3 combine eastern initiative with lower-hemisphere formation: experience begins close to the self and develops privately.
  • Houses 4–6 combine western responsiveness with lower development: intimate bonds, practical obligations, and immediate environments call skills into being.
  • Houses 7–9 combine western responsiveness with upper participation: engagement broadens through partners, audiences, ideas, and unfamiliar perspectives.
  • Houses 10–12 combine eastern initiative with upper participation: direction moves outward toward contribution, visibility, institutions, or collective concerns.

A quadrant concentration is more specific than a hemisphere count, but also more sensitive to house system and birth-time accuracy. Keep the precision proportional to the data.

The seven major chart shapes

Definitions vary across schools. The thresholds below are operational: firm enough to prevent wishful classification, flexible enough to acknowledge a living sky. When a chart falls near a boundary, name it near-bowl, mixed locomotive, or simply irregular. A clear description is better than a confident label.

Bundle

In a bundle, all ten planets fit within about 120°, one third of the zodiac. The felt quality is compression. Many planetary functions must work through a narrow set of signs and, in a timed chart, a limited range of houses.

This can support specialization, sustained attention, and a strong internal coherence. It does not prove narrow-mindedness. A person may have wide interests while repeatedly approaching them through the same few capacities. If the occupied span is 128°, report a loose bundle or compact bowl rather than granting an invisible 8° allowance.

Bowl

In a bowl, all planets fit within 180°, leaving one complete half empty. A bundle is technically contained within a half as well, so use bundle when the span is 120° or less and bowl when the spread is broader.

The bowl often reads as self-containing: the occupied half has enough internal diversity to function as a system, while the empty half becomes an area approached through circumstance, relationship, or conscious development. Empty does not mean missing. A blank half is not a broken half.

The planets at the two edges are the rim planets. They mark where occupied territory meets open space and may describe how the person approaches what lies beyond familiar concentration. They deserve attention, but they are not automatically stronger than every planet inside the bowl.

Bucket

A bucket contains a bowl-like group of nine planets and one isolated planet on the other side. The isolated body is the handle planet. For a convincing bucket, the nine should fit within 180°, the handle should be separated from both edges by conspicuously large gaps, and its position should fall roughly opposite the center of the cluster.

The handle acts as an outlet—the function through which a crowded chart seeks traction, expression, or release. This does not make it the sole purpose of the chart. If two planets stand outside the cluster, you probably have a seesaw or an irregular pattern, not a bucket with a double handle.

Locomotive

A locomotive usually occupies about 240°, leaving an empty arc near 120°. The occupied portion should be reasonably continuous rather than composed of two compact camps. Its felt quality is momentum: the chart has substantial range, yet the large opening creates pressure to keep moving into what has not been occupied.

Do not call every chart with a visible gap a locomotive. An 80° opening is usually too small; a 160° opening begins to approach bowl territory. Around 120° is the structural clue.

Some astrologers identify a leading planet at one edge of the gap. Schools disagree over whether to follow zodiacal order or diurnal rotation, the apparent daily turning of the sky. If you use a leading-planet method, state the convention. A safer first reading is to examine both edge planets and see which has stronger angular, sign, and aspect support.

Seesaw

A seesaw divides the planets into two substantial groups separated by two clear gaps. Each side should contain at least two planets, and the group centers are commonly near opposition. Two clusters with gaps of roughly 60° or more create a stronger case than a chart with one small break.

The felt experience is contrast. Attention moves between two sets of needs, settings, or strategies. This can support comparison, mediation, and the ability to hold competing truths. It does not automatically mean indecision. A seesaw can be firm precisely because it has learned what each side requires.

Splash

In a splash, planets are distributed around most or all of the wheel without one dominant gap or cluster. As an operational test, the largest gap is usually less than about 60°, and many signs contain at least one planet.

The chart offers multiple points of entry. Curiosity, range, and adaptation may come more naturally than prolonged concentration in one channel. Yet apparent variety can be misleading if most planets form tight aspects to one ruler or if the personal planets occupy one small sector. Distribution is not the same as equal strength.

Splay

A splay has several load-bearing clusters or anchor planets, often forming a rough three-part structure, but it is neither evenly spread like a splash nor cleanly divided like a seesaw. Current usage is inconsistent, and some books use splay as a bin for anything that does not fit elsewhere.

Use the term only when you can point to at least three distinct centers of activity. The felt quality is decentralized organization: life gathers around several durable concerns, each with its own integrity. If you cannot identify those anchors, call the shape mixed. Not every chart owes you a named pattern.

Worked mini-example: proving a bucket

Consider this teaching degree set:

  • Moon 19° Leo
  • Mars 5° Sagittarius
  • Jupiter 9° Capricorn
  • Sun 22° Capricorn
  • Saturn 22°40′ Capricorn
  • Pluto 22°45′ Capricorn
  • Mercury 25° Capricorn
  • Venus 29° Aquarius
  • Neptune 16° Pisces
  • Uranus 2° Taurus

Mars at 5° Sagittarius has an absolute longitude of 245°. Uranus at 2° Taurus is 32°, but for measuring the continuous arc past 0° Aries, write it as 392°. The nine planets from Mars through Uranus therefore occupy 392° − 245° = 147°. They fit comfortably within 180°.

The midpoint of that occupied arc is 318°30′, or 18°30′ Aquarius. Its exact opposition is 18°30′ Leo. The Moon at 19° Leo lies only 0°30′ from that point. Here, orb means the distance from exact opposition. The two gaps isolating the Moon are 106° and 107°. This is a clean bucket, not a locomotive: nine planets form one compact body, while the Moon stands alone across the wheel.

Structurally, lunar functions become the handle: needs, habits, memory, attachment, and emotional pacing provide an outlet for the crowded cluster. Leo adds a wish to make that response personal, expressive, or visible. That is not yet a complete interpretation. Without houses and angles, you cannot responsibly say where this outlet operates. The Saturn–Pluto conjunction, only 0°05′ wide in this example, is also a far more exact contact than the broad bucket geometry and requires its own reading.

Reading shape and hemisphere together

Shape tells you how planetary activity is distributed. Hemispheres tell you where that distribution meets the local sky. A bowl below the horizon may describe an intensely developed private ecosystem. The same bowl above the horizon is more likely to be worked out through visible roles and wider systems. A western-heavy bucket with an eastern handle can show many capacities awakened through other people, then gathered into one self-initiated response.

Do not simply stack keywords. Ask whether the two designs reinforce or correct each other. A bundle in the western hemisphere is concentrated but not necessarily self-enclosed; relationships may be the narrow gate through which most experience arrives. A splash below the horizon can be varied without being publicly scattered.

Common corrections keep the method clean:

  • Do not interpret an empty hemisphere as avoidance or deficiency. It marks low planetary occupation, nothing more.
  • Do not let added points alter the shape after you have seen a label you prefer. Set the rule first.
  • Do not confuse concentration with power. One angular planet can be more immediate than six cadent planets packed together.
  • Do not force exact thresholds into aspect-style orbs. A 183° occupied span is not secretly a 180° bowl; it is a near-bowl, and that description is sufficient.
  • Do not make public, private, self-directed, or responsive into moral rankings. Each mode has skilled and unskilled expressions.
  • Do not claim a hemisphere without reliable angles. A confident interpretation cannot repair uncertain input.

The chart can be lopsided and still be whole.

Practice

Choose one accurately timed chart and use only the ten planets. List their absolute longitudes, calculate every gap, and identify the occupied span. Name the clearest shape, then write one sentence explaining why the nearest alternative does not fit.

Next, count planets above, below, east, and west of the axes. Mark any planet within 2° of an angle as borderline rather than forcing the tally. Note the strongest quadrant.

Write four sentences: one on concentration or spread, one on hemisphere, one on any rim or handle planet, and one naming a limitation in your classification. Keep the geometry visible beside the interpretation.
