  • Pick your sign in the tool below and see where it ranks in each registry.
  • Born in a country not listed? The astronomy part still applies: Gemini to Virgo get the most Sun-days everywhere.

Most "most common zodiac sign" lists divide births by calendar month. That is how Aquarius ends up called rare: February is short. We used the official counts instead and placed them against the Sun's exact sign changes from the JPL ephemeris.

The answer depends on the country, but not by much. In the United States (2000–2014) it is Leo at 8.96%. In England and Wales (2025) it is Gemini at 8.83%. Canada (2024): Leo, 8.95%. Australia (2023): Gemini, 8.77%. New York City (2024): Leo, 8.72%.

In every one of them the top spots go to Gemini, Cancer, Leo and Virgo. Part of that is pure astronomy: Earth moves slowest in early July, so the Sun spends the most days in those signs everywhere on the planet. The rest is each country's own birth season.

The sky behind it

Method. We did not survey anyone and we did not roll random numbers. We stepped through every calendar day from 2000-01-01 to 2014-12-31 (5,479 days) and every four-minute slot of local clock time within each day, 1,972,440 birth moments in all. Each moment is weighted by the number of babies the US Social Security Administration recorded for that date (62.2 million births), divided evenly across the day. For each moment the Sun and Moon come from NASA JPL's DE442 ephemeris (tropical zodiac, geocentric) and the rising sign from the local sidereal time at the stated latitude.

What it assumes. Births spread evenly through the 24 hours. Real hospitals have a daytime bulge (scheduled C-sections and inductions), which nudges rising-sign pairings a little; our earlier rising-sign study found it moves no single rising sign by more than 0.03 points. The calendar is the US one for every latitude, so the non-US rows are "the same births, born further north or south", not a census of those countries.

The rarest

Capricorn is last almost everywhere

Australia's seasons are reversed. Its holiday birth dip is not.Urania's Mirror, London 1824 · Library of Congress

Capricorn is the rarest Sun sign in 4 of the five registries, and where it is not, it is second to last. The full tally: Capricorn in 4 of 5 registries, and Sagittarius in Canada.

The Sun spends the fewest days in Capricorn, about 29.4 days, because Earth moves fastest near its early-January perihelion. And late December to mid-January is the low point of births in every registry here, including Australia, where it is summer. Fewer scheduled deliveries over the holidays look the same in both hemispheres.

Aquarius, the sign month-based lists love to call rarest, beats Capricorn in every one of these registries.

Add the rising sign

From Sun sign to big three, by city

In Toronto, Leo rising is more than twice as common as Aries.Photo: Matthew Henry / Burst

A country's birth calendar sets the Sun sign. The rising sign comes from the city's latitude, and that is where national differences get bigger.

In Toronto the most common rising sign is Leo at 10.90% and the rarest Aries at 4.65%. In London, further north, Virgo at 11.86% against Aries at 3.65%. In Sydney the order flips: Taurus at 10.09%, Virgo at 5.58%.

So a Capricorn Sun with Aries rising is a rare pairing in London and Toronto. In Sydney the rare rising signs are the ones opposite, around Virgo and Libra.

The world

Is there a worldwide answer?

No country publishes a global count of births by day, so a world ranking does not exist. Anyone quoting one is guessing. The astronomy (more Sun-days for Cancer through Virgo) is universal; the birth season is local.

The data

Daily, monthly and quarterly counts

US and England and Wales counts are by day. Canada and Australia are by month and NYC by quarter, split across signs by the Sun's exact ingress times; that split moves no sign by more than 0.27 points.
