Today's table
Sydney runs on sunrise
Down under, the hours stretch while the north's shrink. The weekday rulers stay put.
Sydney is the only city on our list in the southern hemisphere, so its planetary year runs upside down. While London's hours are shrinking toward winter, Sydney's are stretching toward summer.
Today the day hours run about 66 minutes and the night hours about 54. The first hour belongs to Moon, and the Chaldean order follows.
The weekday rulers do not flip, though. A Friday is a Venus day in Sydney just as it is in New York. Only the length of the hours changes with the seasons.

The long hours
December: the long summer hours

Try this today
- On a summer Sunday, catch the first hour, the Sun hour, outside.
- Look up the Venus hour on Friday for a date or a long lunch.
Around December 22, Sydney's Sun rises at 5:41 a.m. and sets at 8:05 p.m.. Each day hour runs 72 minutes.
That puts the longest planetary hours of the year right in the Christmas and New Year stretch. A Sun hour on a summer Sunday is long enough for a proper swim and a long breakfast after.
We set Sydney's finder to the Sun by default: the planet tradition gives to vitality, visibility and confidence, which seems fair for a beach city.
The short hours
June: winter's short hours

Try this today
- In June, use a long night Moon hour for rest or family time.
- Compare today's Sydney table with London's: the two cities are mirror images.
By June 21, sunrise is at 6:59 a.m. and sunset at 4:53 p.m.. Each day hour shrinks to 50 minutes.
Sydney's winter is mild, and so is its squeeze on the hours. They get short, but not London short. The night hours lengthen in return, a good stretch for the Moon and Saturn work tradition sets in the dark.
If you are in Sydney and reading planetary hours advice written for the northern hemisphere, flip any seasonal notes. The arithmetic is identical; the calendar is reversed.
Clock time vs Sun time
Daylight saving the other way round

New South Wales starts daylight saving in spring, on October 4 in 2026, and ends it in autumn, on April 5. That is the reverse of the northern cities on this site.
The planetary hours ignore it, as always. The day starts at sunrise, and the clock only changes the label on that moment.
Sydney's 2026 extremes: earliest sunrise 5:30 a.m. on October 3, latest sunset 8:09 p.m. on January 7.

Why this default
The Sun hour, and Sydney
Sydney is roughly a day ahead of the Americas on the calendar, so its planetary day often has a different ruler from New York's at the same instant. When it is Saturday night in Los Angeles, it is already Sunday, a Sun day, in Sydney. Handy if you are coordinating across time zones.

Quick answers
Do planetary hours work in the southern hemisphere?
Yes. The method is the same everywhere: twelve equal parts of daylight and twelve of night. Only the seasons flip, so the long hours come in December.
Are Sydney times right for Melbourne or Brisbane?
No. Both sit far enough away that sunrise and sunset differ by many minutes, and Brisbane does not use daylight saving. Use the main calculator with your own city.
Does daylight saving affect planetary hours in Australia?
No. In 2026 NSW clocks change on April 5 and October 4, but the hours stay tied to sunrise and sunset.
