The sky behind it
The rules, in order of weight: Mercury direct and out of its shadow; Venus direct; Mars direct; a waxing Moon (more than 12 degrees past the Sun and less than 180); the Moon void of course for no more than 4 hours of the UTC day; no eclipse within 7 days; and a bonus or penalty for the Moon's sign (Taurus and Cancer help, Scorpio and Capricorn hurt, earth signs get one more point for a business). A retrograde Mercury or Venus, a waning Moon or an eclipse week rates the day as Wait. Positions are computed with NASA JPL's DE442 ephemeris for 12:00 UTC.

Why astrologers time a launch at all

There's a branch of astrology built for exactly this question. It's called electional astrology, from the Latin for choosing, and it picks a moment to begin something: a voyage, a building, a marriage, a business. Medieval astrologers such as Sahl ibn Bishr wrote whole books of these rules, and the tradition runs on through later English writers such as William Lilly, author of Christian Astrology (1647).
The idea is simple. A beginning has a birth chart too, so pick a birth chart you'd be happy to live with. The Moon carries the most weight because it moves fastest and stands for the day-to-day life of the venture. A waxing Moon, growing toward full, is the oldest rule for anything you want to grow.
Then come the planets that fit the job. Mercury handles paperwork, deals and messages. Venus rules money, pleasure and agreements. Mars is drive and nerve. When any of them is retrograde, astrologers read that part of life as being on review, which is a fine time to plan and a weaker time to launch.
None of this replaces a business plan, an accountant or a lawyer. Read it as a tradition for picking among dates that already work for you.

New jobs are a little different. You usually get a start date rather than choose one, and a good offer is still a good offer during a retrograde. Venus matters less here, so our job rules ignore the Venus retrograde and lean on Mercury, the Moon and cardinal signs (Aries, Cancer, Libra, Capricorn), the signs of quick starts.
Graded that way, the strongest start days left in 2026 fall in Nov 21 to 23, Dec 10, Dec 13 to 23. If HR offers you a Monday inside Mercury's retrograde (Oct 24, 2026 to Nov 13, 2026), take it if you want the job and expect a slow week of logins and forms.
One more 2026 wrinkle: Jupiter, the planet of growth, turns retrograde on Dec 13, 2026. Astrologers read that as a slower pace for expansion, not a stop sign. We don't mark it as a fail, just note it.

Buying a home is the most "make it last" decision on this page, and the tradition treats it that way. On top of a direct Mercury and Venus and a waxing Moon, the house rules give a point when the Moon sits in a fixed sign (Taurus, Leo or Aquarius; Scorpio's penalty cancels its bonus).
For the rest of 2026 that points to Dec 13 to 14, Dec 16, Dec 18 to 22. In real life a closing date is set by lenders, sellers and lawyers, so use this to pick between options, such as which day to sign the offer or collect the keys.
