A centaur aiming at the middle of the galaxy
Greek writers argued about who the archer was. Eratosthenes said he was Crotus, son of Pan, a hunter who lived among the Muses and invented applause. Later tellers swapped him for Chiron, the wise centaur, even though Chiron already had his own constellation in Centaurus. The name stuck to the picture anyway: a horse-bodied figure with a drawn bow.
Modern stargazers mostly know it by a humbler shape. Eight of its brightest stars make the Teapot, and on a dark summer night in the northern hemisphere the Milky Way rises out of its spout like steam. That glow is not an accident. The centre of our galaxy, with the black hole Sagittarius A*, sits just past the spout, at roughly 27 degrees of the tropical sign. The Sun lines up with it in the third week of December, a few days before the season ends.
On the ground this is a month of gatherings. American Thanksgiving falls on November 26, 2026, four days after the season opens. The Geminid meteor shower, usually the richest of the year, peaks around December 13 to 14, under winter skies in the north and short summer nights in the south.

Around midnight the opposite part of the zodiac rides high, so the twins of Gemini and the bull of Taurus are up for most of the night, with Orion climbing beside them in the east after dinner.
