You have seen it all over your feed: "it's Scorpio season, be nice to your Scorpio friends." A sign season is simply the stretch of time when the Sun is in one zodiac sign. If your birthday is in it, it is your season.
The tropical zodiac divides the Sun's yearly path into twelve 30 degree signs, starting at the March equinox. The Sun moves about one degree a day, so each season lasts roughly a month. But not exactly a month, and not the same dates every year. That is why "Scorpio is October 23 to November 21" lists on the internet are often off by a day.
On this page and its twelve season pages, every start and end is computed from NASA JPL's DE442 ephemeris, to the minute, and shown in New York, Los Angeles, Toronto, London and Sydney time. No copy-pasted date ranges.

A calendar year is 365 days, but the Sun takes about 365 days and a quarter to come back to the same point. So each sign change slips roughly six hours later every year, until a leap day pulls it back.
You can see it in the numbers. Scorpio season 2026 begins at Oct 23, 2026 · 09:38 UTC. One year later, Scorpio season 2027 begins at Oct 23, 2027 · 15:33 UTC: 5 hours and 55 minutes later than a plain 365 days would give.
That is why a birthday on the 22nd or 23rd of a month can be one sign in one year and the next sign in another. If you were born on a cusp day, there is no cusp sign. There is just a minute, and your birth chart knows which side of it you were on.
Four special handovers
The four seasons that start on an equinox or solstice
In the tropical zodiac four sign changes are defined by the Earth's seasons themselves. 0° Aries is the March equinox, 0° Cancer the June solstice, 0° Libra the September equinox, 0° Capricorn the December solstice. Astrologers call these the cardinal signs, the ones that begin each season.

The signs in between follow a pattern too. The middle sign of each season is fixed (Taurus, Leo, Scorpio, Aquarius) and the last is mutable (Gemini, Virgo, Sagittarius, Pisces), easing the handover to the next season.
Not all months are equal
The longest season is Cancer, the shortest Capricorn
Earth's orbit is slightly oval. It is closest to the Sun in early January and farthest in early July, and it moves faster when it is closer. So the Sun seems to hurry through the winter signs and dawdle through the summer ones.
In this cycle Cancer season 2027 is the longest at 31.45 days, and Capricorn season 2026 the shortest at 29.44 days. The difference is about 2.0 days.
If summer feels like it lasts forever in the northern hemisphere, the sky agrees, a little.

Why the Sun is not always in front of its own constellation
The zodiac signs are 30 degree slices of the sky measured from the March equinox. The constellations with the same names are star patterns of different sizes, and precession has slid them nearly a full sign since the zodiac was set about two thousand years ago. So in any sign season the Sun usually stands in front of the constellation before it, by the IAU's official boundaries, and sometimes clips Ophiuchus too. Both are real. They just measure different things: one is a calendar tied to the equinoxes, the other is a map of stars.

Why do zodiac dates change every year?
Because the Sun takes about 365.24 days to return to the same point, the moment it changes sign drifts by about six hours a year and resets with each leap day. Lists with fixed dates are approximations.

Is there a cusp sign if I was born on the day the season changes?
No. The Sun is in one sign or the other at any given minute. Astrologers sometimes talk about cusp energy, but your chart has one Sun sign. Your exact birth time decides it.
