The ram with the golden fleece
The ram of Aries carried Phrixus and his sister Helle away from a stepmother who wanted them sacrificed. It flew east over the water, and Helle slipped from its back and drowned in the strait named for her, the Hellespont, now the Dardanelles. Phrixus reached Colchis, sacrificed the ram to Zeus and hung its golden fleece in a grove guarded by a serpent. That fleece is what Jason and the Argonauts later sailed to steal.
The constellation is small: a bent line of three stars led by Hamal, an orange giant about 66 light years away whose name comes from the Arabic for the lamb. Two thousand years ago the March equinox point sat among these stars, which is why astronomers still call it the First Point of Aries even though precession has carried it into Pisces.
On the ground this is the new year for many people. Nowruz, the Persian new year celebrated from Iran to Central Asia, begins at the equinox moment itself, the same instant this season does. Western astrology starts its zodiac here for the same reason: the day and night are equal, and the light is about to win.
