In Greek myth Zeus became a beautiful white bull to win Europa, a Phoenician princess. She climbed onto his back at the shore and he swam with her all the way to Crete, where she became the mother of King Minos. The continent of Europe carries her name. The sky shows only the front half of the animal, as if it were still rising out of the sea.
The bull's face is the Hyades, a V-shaped cluster about 150 light years away and one of the nearest to Earth. Its eye, Aldebaran, looks like part of the cluster but is a red giant much closer to us, roughly 65 light years off. On the bull's shoulder ride the Pleiades, the Seven Sisters, a tight blue cluster that farmers and sailors from Greece to Polynesia used as a calendar.
The season opens just as the Lyrid meteors peak, around April 22, and includes May 1, the old cross-quarter day of Beltane and today's May Day. Early May also brings the Eta Aquariids, fragments of Halley's Comet, best seen from the southern hemisphere before dawn.
