If Taurus season was one album on repeat, Gemini season is shuffle. The Sun moves into the mutable air sign in late May, and the mood astrologers describe is quick, social, curious and slightly scattered.
Gemini is ruled by Mercury, the planet of words, messages, travel and trade. The twins in its symbol are Castor and Pollux from Greek myth, brothers so close they shared immortality between them. Brothers who shared one immortality
Castor and Pollux were twins with different fathers in the Greek story. Pollux was a son of Zeus and immortal; Castor was the son of a mortal king and could die. When Castor was killed, Pollux begged not to outlive him, and Zeus let the pair split their time, one day on Olympus and one in the underworld, always together. Sailors prayed to them, and the electric glow sometimes seen on masts in storms, later called St Elmo's fire, was taken as a sign the twins were aboard.
The two heads of the constellation are bright stars of very different kinds. Pollux, the brighter, is an orange giant about 34 light years away, and in 2006 astronomers confirmed a giant planet orbiting it. Castor looks like one white star but is a family of six, three pairs bound together.
Gemini season runs through the end of the school year in much of the northern hemisphere and finishes at the June solstice. In the sky it is a quiet month for meteors, but long northern twilights make it a good time to watch the waxing Moon slide past the twins in the west after sunset.

Castor and Pollux sink into the dusk in the west early in the season and then vanish behind the Sun. The midnight sky now belongs to Scorpius and Sagittarius. Southern viewers get the best of it: the scorpion's tail curls high overhead and the Milky Way's bright centre rises in the east. Northern viewers see Antares low in the south, with the Summer Triangle of Vega, Deneb and Altair climbing in the east.
