The scorpion that chased Orion off the sky
In the Greek story Orion, the giant hunter, boasted he would kill every animal on earth. Gaia, or in some versions Artemis, sent a scorpion that stung him to death. Both were placed among the stars on opposite sides of the sky, so the hunter still flees: Orion sinks in the west as Scorpius climbs in the east.
The heart of the scorpion is Antares, a red supergiant hundreds of times wider than the Sun. Its name means rival of Mars, because its colour and brightness can be mistaken for the red planet when the two are close. Oddly, the Sun never stands in front of Scorpius during Scorpio season. By the official constellation lines it crosses Virgo and then Libra, reaches Scorpius only around November 23, stays about a week, and then spends more than two weeks in Ophiuchus, the serpent bearer.
The festivals of this season face the dark. Halloween falls on October 31, the old Celtic Samhain marks the start of winter the same night, and Mexico's Day of the Dead fills November 1 and 2 with marigolds and candles. The Leonid meteor shower peaks around November 17.
