The only object in the zodiac
Every other sign of the zodiac is a person or an animal. Libra is a tool, a pair of scales, and it was not always separate. Greek astronomers drew these stars as the claws of the neighbouring scorpion, and their names survive in Arabic form: Zubenelgenubi, the southern claw, and Zubeneschamali, the northern claw. The Romans of the first century BCE gave the claws their own identity as the Balance, perhaps because the Sun stood here at the autumn equinox, when day and night weigh the same.
Zubeneschamali has a small mystery attached. A few observers over the centuries have called it greenish, which would make it the only naked-eye star with that tint. Most people see it as white, but it is worth a look on a clear evening in early summer.
The season starts on the September equinox. In 2027 the Harvest Moon, the full moon nearest the equinox, falls on September 15, just before it, so the full moon of October 15 is the one many almanacs call the Hunter's Moon. The Draconid meteors peak around October 8 and the Orionids around October 21, both inside Libra season.
