Most Greek and Roman writers saw Virgo as a goddess of the harvest or of justice. In one telling she is Astraea, the last of the immortals to live among humans, who left the earth in disgust as people grew violent and became this constellation, with the scales of Libra beside her. In another she is Demeter, or her daughter Persephone, holding the grain that comes back every year.
She holds Spica, Latin for an ear of wheat, a hot blue star about 250 light years away that is really two stars orbiting each other in four days. Around 130 BCE the astronomer Hipparchus compared his own measurements of Spica with records made about 150 years earlier and found it had shifted relative to the equinox. That is the first recorded measurement of precession, the slow wobble that separates the tropical signs from the constellations today.
On the ground this is the turn of the year for school and work. In the United States Labor Day falls on September 6, 2027, and in many places this is the start of the grape and apple harvests.
