The Nemean lion and the little king
Heracles' first labour was to kill the lion of Nemea, a beast whose hide no weapon could cut. Arrows bounced off. He finally trapped it in its cave and strangled it, then skinned it with its own claws and wore the pelt as armour for the rest of his life. Zeus put the lion in the sky to honour the fight.
The constellation actually looks like its animal. A backward question mark of stars, the Sickle, makes the head and mane, and a triangle behind it makes the hindquarters. At the base of the Sickle shines Regulus, the little king, about 79 light years away and spinning so fast it is visibly flattened. Regulus lies almost exactly on the Sun's path, so the Sun passes right over it each year, around August 22 to 23. Since 2011 its tropical position has been just past 0 degrees Virgo, so the conjunction lands right at the hand-off between the two seasons.
Old calendars marked August 1 as Lammas or Lughnasadh, the first grain harvest, inside Leo season. The Perseid meteor shower, the summer favourite, peaks around August 12 to 13.
