Aquarius season 2027: weird is the point

The Sun leaves Capricorn for Aquarius in late January 2027, and this year the season holds an annular solar eclipse. Here are the exact times and what to watch.

Late January is when resolutions wobble and the winter feels endless in the north. Then the Sun moves into Aquarius, the fixed air sign, and the mood astrologers describe shifts from duty to ideas.

Aquarius is ruled in tradition by Saturn and in modern astrology also by Uranus, the planet of surprise and invention. That double rulership is a good summary of the sign: rules and rebellion, structure and the urge to tear it up and rebuild it better. The water-bearer pours something out for everyone, which is why the sign is linked to friendship, community and causes.

The 2027 season has an extra feature. A new moon in Aquarius in early February is an annular solar eclipse, the kind where the Moon leaves a bright ring of Sun around its edge. Astrologers treat eclipses as wildcard turning points. Astronomers treat them as something worth checking a map for.

The sky behind it

The Sun enters Aquarius at Jan 20, 2027 · 07:30 UTC. At that instant the Moon is waxing gibbous in Gemini (93% lit) and the Sun's declination is -20.15°.

The dates

When does Aquarius season start and end in 2027?

The Sun crosses 0° Aquarius at Jan 20, 2027 · 07:30 UTC and 0° Pisces at Feb 18, 2027 · 21:33 UTC, 20 hours shorter than an average sign.

The date itself splits: Los Angeles is still on Jan 19 while Sydney has reached Jan 20. Your zone is in the clock below.

Decans: Venus rules the first ten degrees from Jan 20, Mercury takes over on Jan 30, Moon on Feb 9. The Sun is at 15°, dead centre, on Feb 4, 2027.

Air signs are about thinking and talking. Fixed signs hold steady in the middle of a season. Aquarius sits in midwinter in the north, the coldest stretch, and the mood that goes with it is clear, cool and a bit detached.

That detachment gets a bad reputation. In a good light it is the ability to step back, see a pattern, and care about people as a group, not just the ones in front of you. In a rough light it is ghosting everyone to think. Most of us do both.

If you have Aquarius placements you may feel this month most. If you do not, check which house of your birth chart holds Aquarius. That area is where astrologers say the season invites you to experiment.

The the water-bearer in the stars

Ganymede and the great one pouring water

To the Greeks the figure tipping out a jar was Ganymede, a Trojan boy so beautiful that Zeus carried him to Olympus to pour wine for the gods. Older Babylonian lists name the same patch of sky GU.LA, the great one, and show a god holding a vessel with streams flowing out, the waters of Ea again. Several nearby constellations carry the theme: the Southern Fish, the Whale and the River. Astronomers sometimes call this whole region the Sea.

The stars themselves are quiet. The best-known asterism is the Water Jar, a small Y of four stars near Sadalmelik, the brightest in the area, whose Arabic name is usually read as the luck of the king. Look for Fomalhaut below the stream, lonely and bright in an otherwise empty part of the autumn sky.

In the old Celtic calendar early February held Imbolc, the first stirring of spring, and the Christian calendar keeps Candlemas on February 2. North America adds Groundhog Day on the same date. All three mark the halfway point between the solstice and the equinox, which falls during Aquarius season every year.

  • Three changes, one first step, taken after the eclipse day.
  • Never look at the Sun directly, even during an eclipse. Use certified eclipse glasses.

Eclipses get a lot of dramatic coverage online. You can skip the drama. The astronomy is plain: the new moon lines up closely enough with the Sun's path that the Moon passes in front of the Sun for part of the Earth. Where it is annular, the Moon looks slightly too small to cover it fully.

A simple way to mark it: in the week of the eclipse, write down three things you would change if nobody expected you to stay the same. Pick one and take a first step after the eclipse, not on it. Many astrologers suggest letting eclipse days be quiet and acting a few days later.

Valentine's Day also falls inside Aquarius season. Very on brand to celebrate with your friends.

What to look at while Aquarius hides

With the Sun among the water bearer's stars, look opposite for the night show. Leo is high at midnight, its Sickle easy to trace, with Regulus at the base. Before that the winter giants are still out in the evening: Orion, Taurus with red Aldebaran, and Gemini with Castor and Pollux side by side. A clear, moonless night in early February is a good time to try for the faint glow of the zodiacal light after dusk in the west.
