14 voids, 20% void
January's long nights, and a Moon that keeps moving through them.

January is the month everyone wants to start things. Gym memberships, budgets, the side project you swore you would launch. The Moon goes void about three and a half hours into the year, so New Year's morning comes with a built-in invitation to finish before you begin.
The headline window comes around the Full Moon in Leo. The Moon leaves its last aspect in Cancer, a sextile to Mars, and then drifts without another contact for a day and a third before crossing into Leo. If you were planning a big announcement for that stretch, the tradition would nudge you a day later, once the Moon has landed in Leo and starts making aspects again.
The good news for resolution season: most of January's voids are under ten hours, and several fall overnight in the Americas. Your calendar is wide open for the important stuff. Use the quiet patches for the slow, satisfying jobs January loves anyway: sorting files, cancelling subscriptions, sleeping in.

5 planets close voids
Jupiter has the last word
Jupiter closes six of January's fourteen voids, more than any other planet. The run starts on New Year's Day with a sextile from Libra and keeps going: a square from Scorpio on the 3rd, a trine from Sagittarius on the 6th, an opposition from Aquarius on the 11th, then a sextile and a conjunction either side of the long Cancer stretch. A void that follows a Jupiter contact tends to feel generous rather than flat, the kind of lull where people overpromise.
The Sun takes the middle of the month instead. Three voids in a row, on the 13th, 15th and 18th, begin with a solar aspect, as the Moon moves from Pisces through Aries and Taurus in the waxing week after the Capricorn New Moon of January 7.
Two windows run under four hours: the Taurus void on the 18th, about three and a half hours, and the last one of the month, a Scorpio void on the 31st that lasts about two and a half. Four run past twelve hours, and the 32-hour Cancer void on January 21 and 22 is the only one that covers a whole calendar day.

January: when to wait, when to go

Try this today
- Book your first appointment of the year outside a void window.
- Use the long Cancer void for a cosy reset day: laundry, soup, an early night.
- Write your goals while the Moon is void, then act on them once it enters the next sign.
Mark the long Cancer-to-Leo window first, then look for voids that land on your working hours in your own time zone (the checker below converts them). Sign-ups, first sessions and launches go outside those windows. Admin, reviewing last year and rest go inside them.
If you work office hours in New York or London, the voids to watch are the Capricorn one on January 8, which runs from 05:11 to 22:10 UTC and so covers both working days, and the Virgo one from late on the 25th to 11:12 UTC on the 26th. The Taurus void on the 18th is over by 08:32 UTC, before most of Europe has had lunch, so it rarely needs a plan of its own.

Worth knowing
Two Mercury contacts bookend the month: the Moon's last aspect before Aquarius is a conjunction with Mercury, and its final void of January begins with a square to Mercury. Expect the messaging-heavy days to sit on either side of those windows.

Quick answers
Is the Moon void of course on New Year's Day 2027?
Yes, for a few hours. The Moon makes its last aspect in Libra in the early hours of January 1 (UTC) and enters Scorpio later that morning. The table on this page has both times.
Is January 2027 a good month to start a new habit?
Most of the month is not void, so there is plenty of room. Tradition would just avoid starting on the long void before the Moon enters Leo around the Full Moon.
Is the Moon void at the Capricorn New Moon on January 7, 2027?
No. The New Moon falls at 20:24 UTC on January 7, and the next void does not begin until 05:11 UTC on the 8th, after the Moon's conjunction with Mercury in Capricorn. That leaves roughly nine clear hours after the lunation for anyone who likes to set intentions right at the New Moon.
