The idea

What void of course actually means

The Moon is between conversations: done talking to the planets, not yet in the next sign.Photo: Cindy Malette / Burst

Try this today

  • Check the moment you want to send the big email or sign the lease.
  • Keep a void for an admin hour or a nap.
  • Notice how you feel during one void this month. Data beats vibes.

The Moon is the fastest thing in the sky, crossing a sign in about two and a half days. On the way, it lines up with the planets in a handful of set angles, the aspects. After the last of those contacts in a sign, it travels on alone until it reaches the next sign. That gap is the void of course.

It is a very old idea. Medieval and Renaissance astrologers, William Lilly among them, read a void Moon in a question chart as a sign that "nothing will come of the matter". Modern practice softened it into a timing habit: don't start the important thing while the Moon is void, finish things instead.

In 2027, voids add up to about 19% of the year. So most of the time the Moon is perfectly available, and the windows are easy to work around once you can see them.

The rule we use

Ptolemaic aspects, classical planets, exact minutes

Two calendars disagree? It is almost always the planet list.Photo: NASA (International Space Station crew)

Traditional rule: the Moon is void of course from its last exact Ptolemaic aspect (conjunction, sextile, square, trine or opposition) to the Sun, Mercury, Venus, Mars, Jupiter or Saturn while in a sign, until it enters the next sign. Uranus, Neptune and Pluto are not counted, and no orb is used: aspects are timed to the exact minute.

That is the rule from the old texts, which only knew the planets you can see. Many modern calendars add Uranus, Neptune and Pluto; with more planets to aspect, voids get shorter and a few vanish. Neither is wrong; they are different definitions, and we say which one we use.

One more detail: if the Moon makes no aspect at all in a sign, the whole stay is void. In 2027 that never happens with this rule, so every window on this page starts with a named last aspect.

The sky behind it

Computed with skyfield and the JPL DE442 ephemeris: geocentric apparent ecliptic longitudes, tropical zodiac, true ecliptic and equinox of date, all times UTC. For every sign the Moon passes through, we find each exact aspect to the six classical planets, keep the last one, and run the void to the next ingress. A void is listed under the month it starts. Times are geocentric, so the instant is the same everywhere; only your clock reading changes.

The shape of 2027

March is busy, July is quiet

Try this today

  • Put big launches in July if you can choose freely.
  • In March, check every start time against the month table.
  • Open your month below and circle the long windows first.

Void hours are not spread evenly. March 2027 carries about 228 hours, while July has only about 64. When the Moon makes its last aspect early in a sign, the gap to the next sign is long; when a planet sits late in a sign, the gap is short.

The year has 11 voids of a day or longer and 4 under an hour. The longest, 49 h 57 m from Aug 18, starts after the Moon's opposition Jupiter in Pisces. The shortest, on Nov 25, lasts 5 min.

The Moon goes void a few hours into the year (from Fri Jan 1 · 03:27 UTC on New Year's Day) and the year closes with a void too: the last void of 2027 starts Fri Dec 31 · 14:41 UTC and runs into January 1, 2028.

Using it well

What to do with a void (and what to skip)

A void is a hallway, not a wall. Walk through it doing the small jobs.Photo: Tomáš Hustoles / Burst

Try this today

  • Inbox zero, receipts, backups.
  • A walk without a destination.
  • Draft the plan, launch it after the ingress.

The traditional advice is simple. Avoid starting what you want to grow: a business, a contract, a first date, a big purchase. Use the time for what is already underway: editing, cleaning, replying, sleeping.

The last aspect matters too. A void that begins after a trine to Jupiter feels different, in tradition, from one that begins after a square to Saturn. The table lists the last aspect so you can read it your way.

And keep perspective. This is a reflective tradition, not a forecast. If the only time you can sign is during a void, sign. You will be fine.

Quick answers

Is the Moon void of course today?

As of this page's last build (Mon Oct 26 · 10:18 UTC), the Moon was not void of course. The next void starts Tue Oct 27 · 14:51 UTC and ends Wed Oct 28 · 01:01 UTC. The checker on this page rechecks it live in your own time zone whenever you open it.

How many void of course Moons are there in 2027?

161 windows start in 2027, adding up to about 1679 hours, roughly 19% of the year. The average void lasts 10 h 26 m.

What is the longest void of course Moon in 2027?

49 h 57 m in Pisces, from Wed Aug 18 · 04:57 to Fri Aug 20 · 06:54 UTC, after the Moon's opposition Jupiter.

What should you not do when the Moon is void of course?

Tradition says not to start things you want to grow: launches, signings, first dates, big purchases. Finishing work, resting, cleaning and reflecting are the classic void activities. It is a timing custom, not a rule you will be punished for breaking.

Do Uranus, Neptune and Pluto count for void of course?

Not here. We use the classical rule with the six visible planets plus the Sun. Some modern calendars add the outer planets, which makes voids shorter and is the usual reason two calendars disagree.

Why are void of course times different on other sites?

Three usual reasons: a different planet set (outer planets or not), a different time zone, or rounding. Our times are UTC to the minute; the checker converts them to your zone.

Is a void of course Moon bad luck?

No. It is a quiet stretch in the lunar cycle that electional astrologers avoid for starting things. Many people like voids for rest and admin. Nothing bad is predicted.
