What age is your Saturn return? Usually 29
We computed the exact return for every birthday from 1930 to 2010. The first lands between 28.4 and 30.4, the second between 58.2 and 59.7. Here is why everyone says 27.

At a glance
Your first Saturn return is exact between ages 28.4 and 30.4 (most people at 29), the second between 58.2 and 59.7, and a third between 87.3 and 88.8. The popular "27 to 30" is the wider stretch when Saturn is back in your Saturn sign.

The short answer
Your first exact Saturn return lands at 28 or 29. Every time.

Try this today
- Put your birth date into the Saturn clock below. It gives your exact first hit, not a range.
- If you are 27 and things feel heavy, check whether Saturn has entered your Saturn sign yet. That is the part that can start early.
You have probably heard it at a birthday dinner, half joking: "Oh, you're 27? Saturn return." Then at 28. Then at 29. It starts to feel like a season with no edges.
So we gave it edges. We took every birth date from January 1, 1930 to December 31, 2010, 29,585 of them, and computed the day Saturn came back to the exact degree it held on each one.
The answer is tighter than the internet suggests. The first exact hit lands between 28.4 and 29.9. 78% of people get it at 29 and the other 22% at 28. No one in the sample gets it at 27 or 30. The average is 29 years, 3 months.
Why so tight? Saturn takes about 29.5 years to go once around the Sun (ESA). Seen from Earth it loops backward for a few months each year, which can make it touch your degree early, late, or three times. That wobble is worth about a year and a half. The rest is plain orbit.
The sky behind it
Method: Saturn's geocentric apparent ecliptic longitude (tropical, true equinox of date) from NASA JPL's DE442 ephemeris, sampled daily at 12:00 UTC from 1925 to 2108, with each zero crossing of transit Saturn minus natal Saturn interpolated to the hour. Passes less than two years apart count as one return. Ages are years of 365.25 days since the birth date. Sample: 29,585 birth days, 1930-2010.
Where 27 comes from
So why does everyone say 27 to 30?

Try this today
- Find your Saturn sign in your birth chart, then check the ingress table further down for when Saturn returns to it.
- Write down what was going on in your life the month Saturn entered your sign, and again at the exact hit. Compare the two.
There are two ways to count a Saturn return, and most people blend them without noticing.
The exact return is the day transit Saturn reaches your natal Saturn's degree. That is the 28-or-29 moment above.
The whole-sign return starts the day Saturn walks back into the same zodiac sign it was in when you were born, and ends when it leaves for the last time. Saturn spends roughly two and a half years in each sign, so this window is wide. If you were born with Saturn late in a sign, say 25° Pisces, Saturn re-enters Pisces long before it reaches your degree.
Computed for the same 29,585 birthdays, Saturn re-enters your Saturn sign at age 26.1 at the earliest and 28 years on average. It leaves by 32.8 at the latest. That is your "27 to 30", with a little spill on both sides.
Neither count is wrong. Many astrologers feel the theme building as Saturn enters the sign and peaking at the exact degree. If 27 felt like a reckoning, the sky offers a reason.
The sky behind it
| Return | Saturn re-enters your sign | First exact pass | Last exact pass | Saturn leaves your sign |
|---|---|---|---|---|
| First | 26.1 to 29.9 | 28.4 to 29.9 | 29.1 to 30.4 | 29.1 to 32.8 |
| Second | 55.2 to 59.0 | 58.2 to 59.0 | 58.2 to 59.7 | 58.2 to 61.9 |
| Third | 85.1 to 88.8 | 87.3 to 88.8 | 88.0 to 88.8 | 88.0 to 91.8 |
One hit or three
Why some Saturn returns happen three times

Try this today
- If you get three passes, note the first date in your calendar as the opening, the middle as the review, the last as the close.
- Retrograde stations near your degree are good days for quiet stocktaking, not big launches. A habit, not a rule.
Every year Earth overtakes Saturn on the inside track, and for about four and a half months Saturn appears to slide backward against the stars. Astrologers call that retrograde. Old star atlases drew those loops beautifully, like the plate here.
If one of those loops sits right on your natal degree, Saturn crosses it forward, backs over it, then crosses again. Three exact hits.
How common is that? At the first return, 63% of people get one clean pass and 37% get three. At the second return the odds flip: 59% get three passes. When there are three, they can spread over as much as 9 months.
There is no "worse" version. Some astrologers read a triple pass as the same lesson in three drafts: a first look, a revision, a final copy. A single pass reads more like one decisive chapter.
The second lap
Your second Saturn return: 58 to 60

Try this today
- If you are in your late fifties, list three things you started around 29 that are still part of your life.
- If a parent is near 58, ask them what age 29 felt like. You may hear your own year described back to you.
If the first Saturn return is a coming-of-age, the second is a long view from a high ridge. You know how the terrain works now. You can see which paths you took and which you left.
The math is the same lap, done twice. Your second exact return lands between 58.2 and 59.0, with retrograde passes stretching to 59.7. Count the whole-sign window and it widens to 55.2 to 61.9. That is why you see "58 to 60" quoted so often: it is a fair summary.
People born in 1966, for example, had their second returns between Mar 22, 2024 and Feb 11, 2026, depending on the birthday.
A third return comes between 87.3 and 88.8. Not everyone gets to see one, so if you do, it is worth marking: less a test than a look back over a whole life.
The whole cycle
The Saturn cycle runs in seven-year chapters

Try this today
- Mark your own seven-year beats with the Saturn clock below. It lists every square and opposition by date.
- Pick one chapter, say age 21 to 29, and write one sentence about what you built in it.
The return is the loud part, but Saturn hits other checkpoints on the way round. Every quarter turn it makes a hard angle to where it started.
From the same computation, the averages are: waxing square at 7.2, opposition at 14.5, waning square at 21.8, and the return at 29.3. Then the cycle starts again: 36.5, 43.9, 51.2, 58.6.
Look at those first ages and you will recognise school milestones: starting school, early teens, leaving home. Astrologers read the Saturn squares and opposition as smaller check-ins between the big reviews. It is a lens, and a surprisingly good timeline to journal against.
The squares and oppositions vary more than the return. The opposition at the first lap ranges from 12.8 to 16.3, because Saturn's elliptical orbit makes it travel faster on one side of the Sun than the other.
The sky behind it
| Milestone | Average age | Range |
|---|---|---|
| Waxing square (lap 1) | 7.2 | 5.7 to 8.2 |
| Opposition (lap 1) | 14.5 | 12.8 to 16.3 |
| Waning square (lap 1) | 21.8 | 20.9 to 23.4 |
| First return (lap 1) | 29.3 | 28.4 to 29.9 |
| Waxing square (lap 2) | 36.5 | 35.5 to 38.0 |
| Opposition (lap 2) | 43.9 | 42.7 to 45.4 |
| Waning square (lap 2) | 51.2 | 50.0 to 52.6 |
| Second return (lap 2) | 58.6 | 58.2 to 59.0 |
| Waxing square (lap 3) | 66.0 | 64.6 to 67.2 |
| Opposition (lap 3) | 73.3 | 71.8 to 75.2 |
| Waning square (lap 3) | 80.7 | 79.2 to 81.7 |
| Third return (lap 3) | 88.0 | 87.3 to 88.8 |

Saturn return: what is it, really?
A Saturn return is Saturn coming back to its birth position in your chart. In astrology Saturn stands for structure, time, commitment and limits, so the return is read as a review of what you have built and whether it still fits. That is a tradition, not a prediction. The Saturn return overview covers meanings by house and sign.

Quick answers
What age is your Saturn return?
Your first Saturn return is exact between ages 28.4 and 29.9, and with retrograde passes it can stretch to 30.4. Across everyone born 1930 to 2010, 78% hit the first exact pass at 29 and 22% at 28. The average is 29 years, 3 months.
Can your Saturn return happen at 27?
Not the exact return: in our computation nobody born 1930 to 2010 has a first exact pass before 28.4. What can start at 27, or even 26.1, is the wider window when Saturn re-enters your Saturn sign. Astrologers who use whole-sign returns count that, which is where "27 to 30" comes from.
When is my second Saturn return?
Between ages 58.2 and 59.7 for the exact passes, and roughly 55.2 to 61.9 if you count Saturn's whole stay in your Saturn sign. For someone born in 1966 it ran Mar 22, 2024 to Feb 11, 2026 across the year's birthdays.
How long does a Saturn return last?
The exact part is short: 63% of people get a single exact hit, and the rest get three passes spread over up to 9 months. Saturn stays in your Saturn sign for about two and a half years, which is the longer stretch most people mean when they say they are "in" their return.
What is a Saturn return?
It is the moment Saturn comes back to the exact zodiac degree it held when you were born. Saturn takes about 29.5 years to circle the Sun, so it happens near ages 29, 59 and 88. In astrology it is read as a coming-of-age checkpoint, a review of what you have built. It is a tradition and a lens, not a forecast.
Who is having their Saturn return in 2026?
First returns in 2026: people born Mar 1996 to May 1997 and Nov 1997 to Jan 1998. Second returns: people born May 1966 to Sep 1966 and Jan 1967 to Mar 1968. Saturn spends the rest of 2026 in Aries, at 10°13′ Aries on Oct 18, 2026.
Who is having their Saturn return in 2027?
First returns with an exact pass in 2027: born Mar 1997 to May 1998 and Nov 1998 to Feb 1999. Second returns: born May 1967 to Oct 1967 and Feb 1968 to Apr 1969. The full list by birth year is on the Saturn return timeline.
Does my birth time change my Saturn return age?
Barely. Saturn moves at most about eight arcminutes a day, so a different birth time moves your return by hours, not days. Your birth date is enough. Birth time matters for the house Saturn falls in, which astrologers use to read what the return is about.
