- Count that many signs from your rising sign, starting with the rising sign as 1.
Annual profections are one of the oldest timing tools in Western astrology. The Hellenistic astrologer Vettius Valens described them in the 2nd century, and they are simple enough to do on your fingers.
At birth you're in your 1st house: the sign that was rising. On your first birthday the count moves to the next sign, your 2nd house. On your second birthday, the 3rd. After twelve birthdays you're back on the rising sign, so ages 0, 12, 24, 36, 48 and so on all start a new lap.
The house you land on is the area of life that's lit up for the year. The ruler of the sign on that house is the lord of the year, the planet whose condition in your birth chart, and whose transits, matter most until your next birthday.
That's it. No ephemeris, no orbs. Just your age, your rising sign and a little counting. If someone you know was born in 1997, they turn 29 in 2026, and 29 mod 12 = 5, so their 2026 birthday opens a 6th house year.

Search 'profection year age 29' and you'll see two answers: the 6th house and the 5th. The difference comes from where the counting starts.
The Hellenistic method counts the first year of life, from birth to your first birthday, as the 1st house. Your age at that point is 0. So the formula is (age mod 12) + 1, using the age you have completed. Counting 'age 1 = 1st house' shifts everything by one, and it's a common error rather than an alternative school.
A second wrinkle: the profection year runs birthday to birthday, not January to December. If your birthday is in November, you'll spend most of 2026 in one house and switch in November. That's why the finder below shows exact dates.

Each sign has a traditional ruler, and the ruler of your profected sign becomes the lord of the year. The ancients used only the seven visible planets, so Saturn rules both Capricorn and Aquarius, Jupiter both Sagittarius and Pisces, and so on.
In a 1st house year the lord is your chart ruler: Mars for Aries and Scorpio rising; Venus for Taurus and Libra rising; Mercury for Gemini and Virgo rising; Moon for Cancer rising; Sun for Leo rising; Jupiter for Sagittarius and Pisces rising; Saturn for Capricorn and Aquarius rising.
Astrologers then look at where that planet sits in your birth chart and what it does by transit during the year. A time lord well placed and well supported points to an easier year; one under pressure, a more effortful one. It's a way of reading emphasis, not of fixing outcomes.
