Cancer begins at the June solstice, the longest day in the north. The Chinese calendar marks the same instant as Xiazhi, Summer Solstice, one of its oldest solar terms. So Cancer starts on a date the two traditions agree is special.
In Western astrology the Cancer Sun is a cardinal water sign: protective, tender, a memory like an elephant and a shell to match. In the popular Chinese zodiac, the season you were born in does not decide your sign. The year does. A Cancer born in a Dragon year and one born in a Rabbit year share a solstice Sun and nothing else on the animal side.
