  • Put two dates in your calendar: New Year's Eve dinner on Friday, Feb 5, and the Lantern Festival on Feb 20.
  • If you have Korean friends, wish them a happy Seollal a day later than your Chinese friends. They will notice you got it right.
  • Look west after sunset a day or two later. The first thin crescent of the Goat year is the Moon that opened it.

Somewhere in late January the red decorations go up, the dumpling plans start, and someone asks the family group chat the same question as every year: wait, when is it this time?

Here is the answer for 2027, worked out the way the calendar itself works. A Chinese month begins on the day of a new moon, counted in China time. The month that holds the December solstice is month eleven, and Lunar New Year is the start of month one, two new moons later in a normal year.

The December 2026 solstice sets the frame, and the second new moon after it falls at 15:56 UTC on Feb 6, 2027. In Beijing that is 23:56, only 4 minutes before midnight. Close, but it counts: the first day of the Fire Goat year is Saturday, Feb 6, 2027.

That near miss has a lovely side effect. Korea keeps the same lunar calendar but counts in Korea time, an hour ahead, where the new moon lands at 00:56 the next day. So Seollal 2027 is Sunday, Feb 7, 2027, a day after China. Vietnam's Tết, counted an hour behind China, stays on Feb 6.

If you live in the Americas or Europe, the festival date follows China's calendar, not your local new moon. For reference, the new moon is at Sat, Feb 6, 10:56 AM EST in New York, Sat, Feb 6, 7:56 AM PST in Los Angeles, Sat, Feb 6, 3:56 PM GMT in London and Sun, Feb 7, 2:56 AM GMT+11 in Sydney.

Rule used: the Chinese national standard GB/T 33661-2017 (new moon day in UTC+8; month eleven holds the solstice; leap months take the first month without a principal solar term). We computed every Lunar New Year from 1924 to 2044 from the JPL DE442 ephemeris and checked anchor years against the Hong Kong Observatory tables. The 2026 year (Fire Horse) began Feb 17, 2026; the 2028 year begins Jan 26, 2028.

What a Fire Goat actually is

  • Find out who in your life is a Goat: anyone born in 1967, 1979, 1991, 2003, 2015 (check the exact dates in the finder below, January birthdays can belong to the year before).
  • Know someone born in 1967? They are a Fire Goat too, so 2027 is their sixtieth-year return of the whole pattern. That is a party.

Every year in the Chinese calendar has two labels stacked together. One of ten heavenly stems, which carry the five elements (Wood, Fire, Earth, Metal, Water) in a yang and a yin version, and one of twelve earthly branches, which carry the twelve animals. Run the two side by side and the same pair repeats every sixty years (Sexagenary cycle).

2027 is Ding Wei: the stem Ding, yin Fire, with the branch Wei, the Goat. The Goat is the eighth animal, after the Horse and before the Monkey. In the story of the Great Race, it is the animal that came in eighth (Chinese zodiac).

The animal's name causes a small, cheerful argument every twelve years. The character 羊 (yáng) covers goats and sheep alike, so you will see Year of the Goat, Sheep or Ram. Vietnam reads it unambiguously as a goat; Japan as a sheep (Goat (zodiac))). None of them is wrong.

What is the Goat said to be like? Chinese astrology describes Goat people as peace-loving, kind and well liked. Fire, in this system, is the element of warmth and visibility. Put them together and the traditional picture is a gentle person with a bit more spark than the average Goat. That is folklore and character-sketching, the same spirit as reading your Sun sign: a mirror, not a forecast.

The sky behind it

The Goat year opens with a ring of fire at 17°38′ Aquarius

A Fire Goat year that begins with a ring of fire. The sky does not usually make the pun this easy.Johann Gabriel Doppelmayr, Atlas Novus Coelestis, 1742

Try this today

  • Look up which house of your Western chart holds 17°38′ Aquarius. Astrologers read eclipses as spotlighting that area of life for about six months.
  • Never look at an annular eclipse without certified eclipse glasses. The ring is still the Sun.
  • Mercury stations retrograde 3 days after New Year, at 5°59′ Pisces. Double-check travel bookings for the holiday week.

The new moon that starts the Goat year is not an ordinary one. The Moon passes almost straight across the Sun, and because it is near the far point of its orbit it looks a little too small to cover it: about 91% of the Sun's width by our numbers. The result is an annular solar eclipse, a bright ring around a dark disc.

NASA's eclipse catalogue puts greatest eclipse at 16:00 on Feb 6, 2027 (Terrestrial Time), with the ring visible along a track across Chile, Argentina and the Atlantic, and a partial eclipse over South America, Antarctica and western and southern Africa (NASA GSFC). Nobody in China will see it; it happens after dark there.

In the Western zodiac the eclipse sits at 17°38′ Aquarius, in the fixed air sign that astrologers tie to friends, groups and the future. Pluto is in Aquarius too, at 5°30′. Saturn (10°46′ Aries) and Neptune (2°28′ Aries) are both in Aries, and Venus is at 3°31′ Capricorn, in the sign of the sea-goat. Mars, Jupiter and Uranus are retrograde on the day.

Two weeks later, the first full moon of the Goat year comes with a faint penumbral lunar eclipse. The Lantern Festival is Feb 20, 2027; the eclipse peaks at Feb 20, 2027 · 23:12 UTC, which is Sat, Feb 20, 6:12 PM EST in New York and already Feb 21 in China. It is so shallow that most people will notice only a slight dimming on one edge of the Moon.

The sky behind it

Solar eclipse test: at greatest eclipse (Feb 6, 2027 · 15:59 UTC, our geocentric minimum) the Sun and Moon are 0.2671° apart, inside the 1.4224° limit for the Moon's shadow to touch Earth. Moon-to-Sun apparent size ratio 0.9149, under 1, so annular. NASA lists magnitude 0.928.

Goats in the Western sky

The Western sky has goats too

Capella means little she-goat. She has been riding on the Charioteer's shoulder since Ptolemy.Urania's Mirror, London 1824 · Library of Congress

Try this today

  • On a clear February evening, find Orion, then look high above it for a bright yellow-white star with a small triangle of fainter stars nearby. That is Capella and her Kids.
  • If you are a Capricorn born in a Goat year, you are a goat twice over. Lean in.

If you are coming to the Goat year from Western astrology, you already know at least two goats.

The first is Capricorn, the sea-goat: half goat, half fish, the sign the Sun crosses from late December. There is no historical link between Capricornus and the Chinese Goat; they grew up in different sky traditions. But Venus is in Capricorn on New Year's Day 2027, which feels like a small wink.

The second is brighter and easier to miss. Capella, the sixth-brightest star in the night sky and the brightest in Auriga, takes its name from the Latin for a small female goat. Greek myth made her Amalthea, the goat that nursed the infant Zeus, and Ptolemy's Almagest describes the star as the goat the Charioteer carries (Capella).

On a February evening around Lunar New Year, Capella rides high in the sky after dark across most of the northern hemisphere, a bright yellow-white star you can find even from a city. So when the fireworks die down, look up. The Western Goat is right there.

Fire Goat babies

  • Write your baby's Chinese animal and Western big three in the baby book. Both are part of the story of the day.
  • Born near midnight in a far-off time zone near New Year? Note the exact time. The finder below explains why it matters.

If your due date lands in 2027, here is the short version: a baby born from Feb 6, 2027 through Jan 25, 2028 is a Fire Goat.

In Western terms, the Goat year opens with the Sun in Aquarius (Feb 6 to Feb 17), passes through every sign, and closes with 6 more days of Aquarius in January 2028. The longest single stretch is Cancer, 32 days. The table below has every boundary.

There is one wrinkle worth knowing before the baby shower. Chinese astrology has two schools for when the year turns. Festival calendars use Lunar New Year. Four Pillars (BaZi) readings usually use Lìchūn, the start of spring, when the Sun reaches 315° of longitude: Feb 4, 2027 at 09:46 China time. So a baby born after that moment and before Feb 6 is a Horse at the festival and a Goat in a Four Pillars chart. At the other end, a baby born from Jan 26, 2028 until Lìchūn on Feb 4, 2028 at 15:31 China time is a Monkey at the festival but still a Goat by Lìchūn.

None of this tells you who your child will be. It is a lovely thing to know, and a story you get to tell them.

Welcoming the Goat

Red, firecrackers and fifteen days of new year

The Nian beast was afraid of two things: the colour red and loud noise. Hence everything.Photo: Silvia F / ISO Republic

Try this today

  • Give a red envelope to someone younger than you, even if it is two dollars and a note. The envelope matters more than the amount.
  • Plan a lantern walk or just a lit candle in the window on Feb 20, the full-moon night that closes the festival.
  • If a Goat in your life is turning 12, 24, 36, 48 or 60, a pair of red socks is the most on-brand gift of the year.

Lunar New Year, also called the Spring Festival, runs from New Year's Eve to the Lantern Festival on the fifteenth day, which in 2027 is Feb 20, 2027 (Chinese New Year).

The red everywhere has a story. In the legend of the Nian, a beast that came to terrorise villages at New Year, people discovered it feared the colour red and loud noises. So: red couplets on the door, red lanterns, firecrackers. Money goes into red envelopes, mostly for children and younger relatives, with amounts ending in 8 preferred and 4 avoided (same source). In December 2024 UNESCO inscribed the Spring Festival on its list of the Intangible Cultural Heritage of Humanity (UNESCO).

If you were born in a Goat year, 2027 is your běnmìngnián, your own zodiac year. A widely kept folk custom says to wear something red through it, often red socks, a red bracelet or red underwear (USC Digital Folklore Archives). It is tradition, not prescription. A red thread around the wrist counts.

Goat, Sheep or Ram?

All three. The character 羊 (yáng) means the goat-and-sheep family, and different countries settled on different animals: Vietnam reads it as the goat, Japan as the sheep. "Year of the Sheep 2027" and "Year of the Goat 2027" are the same year.

Quick answers

When is Chinese New Year 2027?

Saturday, Feb 6, 2027. That is the civil date in China of the new moon that opens the first lunar month. The new moon itself is at 15:56 UTC, which is 23:56 in Beijing, just 4 minutes before midnight. The Hong Kong Observatory's 2027 calendar lists the same date.

What is the Chinese zodiac animal for 2027?

The Goat, and specifically the Fire Goat (Ding Wei in the sixty-year cycle). The year runs from Feb 6, 2027 to Jan 25, 2028, 354 days. The same character, 羊 (yáng), is also translated Sheep or Ram, so "Year of the Sheep 2027" means the same year.

Is 2027 the year of the Fire Goat?

Yes. Years ending in 6 and 7 carry the Fire element, and 2027 is the yin Fire year (the stem Ding). Paired with the Goat branch (Wei), it gives the Fire Goat. The last one began Feb 9, 1967.

What is a Fire Goat 2027 baby?

A baby born from Feb 6, 2027 through Jan 25, 2028. By Western Sun sign they range from Aquarius (born Feb 6 to Feb 17) all the way round to Aquarius again in January 2028. Babies born after Lìchūn (Feb 4, 09:46 China time) and before Feb 6 are Horses by the Lunar New Year rule but Goats by the start-of-spring rule some astrologers use.

When does the Year of the Goat end?

On Tuesday, Jan 25, 2028. The next day, Jan 26, 2028, begins the Year of the Earth Monkey.

Why does Chinese New Year change every year?

Because the Chinese calendar is lunisolar. Each month starts on the day of a new moon, and the first month is fixed by the Sun: it is usually the second new moon after the December solstice. In our computed table for 1924 to 2044, the earliest Lunar New Year was Jan 21, 1966 and the latest Feb 20, 1985.

Is Korean New Year 2027 on the same day?

No, and it is a fun one. Korea counts the date in Korea time (UTC+9), where the new moon falls at 00:56 on Feb 7, 2027. So Seollal 2027 is Sunday, Feb 7, 2027, one day after China. Vietnam's Tết uses UTC+7, where the new moon is at 22:56 on Feb 6, 2027, so Tết matches China.

Is there an eclipse on Chinese New Year 2027?

Yes. The Lunar New Year new moon is also an annular solar eclipse, with greatest eclipse a few minutes after the exact new moon. NASA's catalogue maps the ring-of-fire path across Chile, Argentina and the Atlantic, with a partial eclipse over South America, Antarctica and western and southern Africa. It is not visible from China.
