The Fire Horse superstition, from 1966 to 2026

One old story changed a nation's birth rate in 1966. Sixty years on, the Fire Horse is back: February 17, 2026 to February 5, 2027.

At a glance

The Fire Horse (hinoeuma) superstition is a Japanese folk belief that women born in a Fire Horse year are unlucky. In 1966 it cut Japan's births by about 25%. 2026 is the next Fire Horse year: February 17, 2026 to February 5, 2027 in the Chinese calendar, all of 2026 in Japan.

  • Ask an older relative if they ever heard the hinoeuma story. Oral memory is half this history.

Somewhere in Japan this year, a couple is doing quiet maths about a due date. That is the Fire Horse superstition in one sentence.

The East Asian calendar names years with two cycles running together: ten heavenly stems (paired with five elements) and twelve earthly branches (the animals). Together they make a 60-year loop, the sexagenary cycle. One of those sixty combinations is bing-wu in Chinese, read hinoe-uma in Japanese: the yang fire stem with the Horse.

The Japanese folk belief says a woman born in a hinoeuma year is fiery, headstrong and dangerous to her husband. Men were not the target. There is no matching belief in Western astrology.

It is worth saying plainly: there is no evidence that birth year shapes anyone's fate this way. What is real, and measurable, is what the belief did to families.

The sky behind it

The stem-branch year number is (year - 4) mod 60; Fire Horse years are 1906, 1966, 2026, 2086. Chinese years start at Lunar New Year, computed here as the second new moon (China Standard Time date) after the December solstice, from JPL DE442. That rule matched published dates for 1906, 1966, 1967, 1985, 2025, 2026 and 2027.

Where it comes from

  • Read Saikaku's version (it appears in Five Women Who Loved Love, 1686) and notice how little of it is about birth years.

The story people point to is Yaoya Oshichi, a greengrocer's daughter in Edo (now Tokyo). After a fire, her family sheltered at a temple, where she fell for a young temple page. Back home, she set a fire hoping to see him again. She was burned at the stake in 1683 (Wikipedia).

Here is the slippery part. Her life became material for Ihara Saikaku and for puppet and kabuki plays, and it was a jōruri by Ki no Kaion that placed her birth in a Fire Horse year. A birth in 1666 comes from a later note that she was 11 in 1676. Saikaku gives her age as 16, which does not fit 1666 in the old way of counting ages (Hinoeuma). The story was long treated as true; modern historians doubt much of it.

So the most famous "proof" of the superstition is a stage biography with a birth year that may have been chosen to fit the legend. That is how folk beliefs often harden: a good story, repeated until it feels like evidence.

The documented drop

1966: the year Japan's births fell by a quarter

1,360,974 births: a dip so sharp it still shows as a notch in Japan's population pyramid.Photo: Jakub Żerdzicki / Unsplash

This is where the superstition stops being a story and becomes data. Japan recorded 1,360,974 births in 1966, about 25% fewer than the year before, and births climbed again in 1967 (Hinoeuma, citing Cabinet Office figures and Akabayashi 2007). The total fertility rate fell to 1.58 (Meiji University).

How did it happen? Partly by timing: couples postponed or brought births forward. Partly by abortion: a 1975 paper by Kanae Kaku in Annals of Human Biology documented a rise in induced abortions in 1966 (Kaku 1975). Newspapers of the time also covered the worry, and local campaigns pushed back against it.

The previous Fire Horse, 1906, showed a smaller dip of about 4%, with some births reportedly registered in the neighbouring year (Hinoeuma).

The number became a national reference point. When Japan's fertility rate for 1989 came in at 1.57, below even the Fire Horse year, the press called it the "1.57 shock" (Meiji University), and it helped push declining births onto the policy agenda.

The sky behind it

In Japan the dip followed the Gregorian calendar year, not the lunar year: since 1873 Japan has counted the zodiac year from January 1. Births in January 1966, before the January 21, 1966 Lunar New Year, were still hinoeuma in Japan.

  • Born or due between February 17, 2026 and February 5, 2027? Your child is a Fire Horse in the Chinese calendar.
  • Due in late January 2027? Check the date below: Japan and China give different answers.

Sixty years after 1966, the cycle has come round. In the Chinese calendar the Fire Horse year started with the new moon of Tuesday, February 17, 2026, and ends on February 5, 2027, the eve of the February 6, 2027 new year. That makes it a 354-day year, an ordinary twelve-month one. (1966 was a 384-day leap-month year.) In Japan the whole calendar year of 2026 is hinoeuma.

Will it dent births again? Honestly, nobody knows yet, and we will not guess. Japan's births were already at record lows before this year, so a superstition effect would be hard to separate from the long trend. When official 2026 figures are published, the comparison with 1966 will be a fascinating one to read.

If you are expecting a Fire Horse baby: congratulations. The year your child is born says nothing about who they will be. And if you are a Fire Horse yourself, you are in good company with millions of people who have lived perfectly ordinary, unhaunted lives.

1966 at sixty

Born in 1966? Your sixtieth comes with a Saturn return

Try this today

  • Enter a 1966 birth date in the checker below. For July 4, 1966, Saturn was at about 29° Pisces.
  • Write down what you were doing at your first Saturn return (1995-1996 for most 1966 births). Compare notes.

If you were born in 1966, 2026 is your sixtieth birthday. In Japan that is kanreki, literally the return of the calendar: you have lived one full stem-and-branch cycle and are back at your birth year. Families often give something red (Kanreki).

Western astrology has its own sixty-ish milestone. Saturn takes about 29.5 years to circle the zodiac, so it comes back to where it stood at your birth around 29 and again near 59. People born in 1966 have Saturn between 12°28′ Pisces and 29°41′ Pisces, and transiting Saturn crossed those degrees between March 22, 2024 and February 11, 2026. 224 of the 365 birth dates got three exact passes, because Saturn retrograded back over the spot.

One step earlier, around age 40-43, came the Uranus opposition. 1966 natal Uranus sits between 15°29′ Virgo and 24°26′ Virgo; transiting Uranus opposed it between March 19, 2007 and February 5, 2010.

Astrologers read the second Saturn return as a time for taking stock of what you built and what you want the next chapter to hold. It is a lens for reflection, not a prediction. Take it as permission to ask good questions.

The sky behind it

Natal positions are geocentric tropical longitudes at 12:00 UTC on each 1966 date; return and opposition dates are exact passes of transiting Saturn over natal Saturn (and Uranus over the point opposite natal Uranus), JPL DE442.

Am I a Fire Horse?

Enter a birth date (or a due date). You get the Chinese lunar year and the Japanese calendar-year answer, and for any 1966 date the computed second Saturn return and Uranus opposition.

Yes: a Fire Horse year in the Chinese calendar. That lunar year (Bing Horse, yang) runs Jan 21, 1966 to the day before Feb 9, 1967.

In Japan, where the zodiac year (eto) has followed January 1 since the Gregorian switch of 1873, 1966 is hinoeuma, the Fire Horse year.

Why January babies get two answers

China starts the animal year at Lunar New Year, a new moon in late January or February. Japan starts it on January 1. So anyone born between January 1 and January 21, 1966 is hinoeuma in Japan but a Wood Snake in China, and anyone born from January 1 to February 8, 1967 is the reverse. In 2027 the overlap runs January 1 to February 5.

And in Western astrology?

There is no Fire Horse in the Western zodiac

The Western zodiac follows the Sun through twelve signs every year, so nothing repeats on a 60-year clock. The closest echo is Saturn: the 1966 group shares Saturn in Pisces, just as everyone born from January 29, 2025 shares the same Chinese Wood Snake year. Shared placements describe a generation's backdrop, never a verdict.

Quick answers

What is the Fire Horse superstition?

It is a Japanese folk belief that women born in a hinoeuma (Fire Horse) year are headstrong and bring misfortune to husbands. It is tied to the story of Yaoya Oshichi, a girl executed in 1683 for arson whom later retellings said was born in a Fire Horse year. It is a superstition, not part of Western astrology.

Was 1966 a Fire Horse year?

Yes. In the Chinese lunar calendar the Fire Horse year ran from January 21, 1966 to February 8, 1967. In Japan, which counts the zodiac year from January 1, all of calendar 1966 was hinoeuma. So a January 10, 1966 birthday is a Fire Horse in Japan but a Wood Snake in the Chinese reckoning.

Is 2026 a Fire Horse year?

Yes. The Chinese Fire Horse year began with Lunar New Year on Tuesday, February 17, 2026, and ends on February 5, 2027, the day before the February 6, 2027 new year. In Japan the whole of calendar 2026 is hinoeuma.

How much did births drop in Japan in 1966?

Japan recorded 1,360,974 births in 1966, about 25% fewer than in 1965, and births rose again in 1967. The total fertility rate fell to 1.58 that year. A 1975 study by Kanae Kaku linked part of the drop to a rise in induced abortions.

What does the 1966 Fire Horse turning 60 in 2026 mean?

People born in 1966 complete the 60-year sexagenary cycle in 2026. In Japan the 60th birthday is kanreki, the return to the zodiac year of your birth, often marked with something red. In Western astrology the same group has just had its second Saturn return: exact passes fall between March 22, 2024 and February 11, 2026, depending on birth date.

Will the Fire Horse superstition affect births in 2026?

Nobody can know until the birth statistics are published. Japan's birth numbers were already falling before 2026, so any effect would be hard to separate from the trend. We do not forecast it.

When is the next Fire Horse year after 2026?

2086. The cycle repeats every 60 years, so the computed Chinese-calendar span is February 14, 2086 to February 2, 2087. The one before 1966 was 1906 (January 25, 1906 to February 12, 1907).
